Walking (Running) in a Winter Wonderland

Hudson Mohawk Runners Club sponsors FREE races throughout the winter for its members. The course is pretty boring but free is free.  So I signed up for the 3 mile option (there was also a 15K)  today and hoped the conditions would be ok for running.

20131215-103257.jpg

Well, I woke up to at least a foot of snow.  My hubby wasn’t keen on rushing to clear the driveway so I bailed on the race and baked cookies instead.

20131215-103325.jpg

only green trees this year with sprinkles instead of frosting = lazy baker

Eventually, the sun came out and though it was windy, it was warmer than yesterday. I had some errands to do so I drove into town to run. My legs were feeling the effects of 7 miles yesterday.  I again wore my yak trax and took a slow 3 mile run.

20131215-143156.jpg

So that’s 10 miles for the weekend.  That’s a lot for me.

But there’s a reason:

Monday – cookie party at work, tennis after
Tuesday – tennis, dinner out with tennis ladies
Wednesday – yoga, friend’s birthday dinner out
Thursday – movie, friend’s birthday dinner out
Friday – annual tennis party

I will be eating a lot of food this week and I don’t know when or if I will find the time to run.

Happy Running! How was your weekend?

Last Run 5K Race Report

Dec 17, 2011

Dec 14, 2013

This race is always a lot of fun. It sells out fast so I always sign up early. I have done it in 2010, 2011 and 2012.  2010 was my best attempt. In 2011, I fell near the end and in 2012, it was my first race back after my stress fracture. Nonetheless, you do this race for fun, not time.

lg 5k finish

racing in my first last run jacket

Normally you get windbreakers (I have yellow, orange and blue ones).  This year, we got a long-sleeve G-Force wicking fabric shirt.

20131213-152004.jpg

Also the course changed for the first time. The new course route starts on Washington Ave and proceeds through Capital Holiday Lights in Washington Park, and ends on State Street.

last run 13 As in past years, the race starts with 15 minutes of fireworks and then you run through the lights in the park.

Photos from last year:

This year, the weather was the coldest it’s been.  Teens and single digits with the wind chill. Yikes!  To make matters worse, a snowstorm was predicted. Snow starting in the evening.  I kept my fingers crossed that it would not snow hard until I was done. (Remember I fell in this race on dry turf.)

dec14

yup – cold and snowy!

My friend Mary Pat signed up for this race and we had decided to go together. But she lives in the hill towns and was afraid to drive in this awful weather.  So I begged my hubby to drive me.

Since I was afraid that the snow would prevent me from running on Saturday and on Sunday, I decided to run this morning before the snow.

dec14am

colder but no snow yet!

Yes, it was freezing!!  And I only ran 4 miles rather than my usual weekend 8 in case, I was going to the race in the evening.  I knew my legs would be tired and then I wouldn’t be stupid enough to run fast and possibly fall. I could just walk and take photos and have fun.

20131214-112038.jpg

And that’s what I planned.

I bundled up wearing 2 pairs of gloves, 2 pairs of socks, 3 layers and a hat.  I hoped that I would not freeze to death.  I also decided on wearing my YakTrax.  That way I wouldn’t worry about slipping and falling.

My hubby agreed to drive me to the race.  He always does for this race since he has a free parking pass from an old  job.  This time it didn’t work so we drove around looking for parking.  Eventually he just dropped me off at the Empire State Plaza since it was getting late. He would park the car underground and meet me after the race near the band & refreshments.

It was kinda late so I sprinted through the mall which wasn’t easy wearing YakTrax.  I found the start just as the fireworks were beginning.

20131214-200250.jpg

20131214-200259.jpg

They were really good this year because you had a better view with the new start.

20131214-203250.jpg

Then headed to the start.  It was very crowded.  I thought I was at the back but I was facing the wrong way and I was in the front.  The race was crowded the whole time.  It was also snowing the whole race.

I didn’t wear my Garmin and I didn’t care at all about time.  I tried to run (yes run) at a steady pace and slow enough not to fall on the slippery ground.

There were clocks at miles 1, 2 and 3 so I knew that I was running at a slower pace but I was shocked that it wasn’t as slow as I thought.

The lights in the park are spectacular but it was more fun with runners dressed up in costumes and many seeing them for the first time this year. (I have run through this park several times already.)

I only walked once and I really didn’t need to. Even though I had run 4 miles earlier, I was not tired. My legs felt good.

Unfortunately, there were no fireworks while crossing the finish line like last year but I was very pleased with my time (33:16 ) considering the conditions.

I ran this race faster than last year and I was trying to run slow.

20131214-200218.jpg

I was covered in snow by the end

I went inside to find my hubby.  No ice cream this year.  Maybe it was too cold.  I didn’t win any raffle prizes or AG award so we left quickly and headed to Applebees – my hubby’s reward for driving me to the race in a blizzard.

20131214-200309.jpg

happy hubby

So this was be my last race of 2013.  I signed up for a free one tomorrow.  I’ll see how much snow we get overnight.

Happy Running! Anyone one else running a holiday race?

Baby, It’s Cold Outside

1385569_316897328448636_1859726113_n

I am a wimp when it comes to the cold.  Last Saturday I dragged out my winter running hat, fleece-lined tights and thermal running gloves.  And I ran and I was cold (mostly due to the wind.)

20131130-154714.jpg

I haven’t run in the ice and snow yet but that will be coming, I am sure. Due to after work commitments, I sometimes have to run before work when it is even colder. (I take that back. Yesterday I ran alternating between the sidewalk and the road trying to dodge the ice. Scary!!)

dec11

and I have a race on Saturday night and Sunday morning.

There’s always the treadmill or will I be able to summon the BEAST in me and run outdoors.

beasts

I have done it in previous winters.  It is always hard in the beginning.  I envy you runners who live in a warmer climate.

Happy Running! How do you cope with running in the cold weather?

Running and Eating

Not this bad…I don’t do both at the same time!

This seems to be a familiar topic.

I am not delusional to think that a run can burn off the huge quantities of fattening food that I have been eating. But things would be a lot worse if I were a couch potato.

  • Thursday – Thanksgiving Lunch

  • 1 walk before and 1 walk and a 4 mile run after – I don’t think I even burned off the homemade bread pudding (not pictured.)

Love to Run?

Yes, I do and guess what I did today??

I made an impromptu decision and registered for another race.

While running up a hill during the Helper’s Fund 10K, I chatted with a runner named Heidi.  We then became friends on Facebook and she encouraged me to register for this race.  The lowest price deadline was today so I had no time to think about it.

Hence, I will be running a half marathon in Philly on March 30, 2014!  Yikes! (At least Heidi registered too.)

What Happened to Indian Summer?

Brrrrrrrrrrrrrr!

Last weekend, I was dressed like this:

done!

Today I pulled out my capris, fleece vest, windbreaker, fleece headband and gloves.

I am trying to still do longish runs on the weekend. So I headed for the Corning Preserve where I finished my half marathon 2 weeks ago.

hmhs1

and sweating in a tank top

It was very windy and in the 40’s.  Since I ran 6 miles last weekend, the plan was for 7 today.  3.5 out and then back.  The path which is usually full of runners and bikers was pretty empty.  Too cold!!!

I wore my new Brooks and I was cruising on the way out.  On the way back, it was a different story.  Walk…run…walk…run.  Blech but I was running into the wind.

20131026-131728.jpg

7 cold, windy miles done!

Well, I better get used to this weather.  It’s just going to get colder!

LSD Run

Long slow distance

Long and Slow Distance run…12 miles to be exact.

As they say:  “If it were easy, everyone would be doing it!

And it wasn’t easy!

I always seem to struggle with What is the weather going to do? and Where should I run for a good 12 miles? And of course, Will my foot hurt worse? and Will my ankle be more stiff?

I thought running was supposed to be enjoyable!!

And it is when the weather is nice & I have no pain. Unfortunately, this half marathon training period has not gone as hoped.

So the positive is that the half marathon will be so much more fun!!!  I can’t wait!!

sarasota

I want to run here!

???????????????????????????????

not here…

Of course, it was cloudy & cold and windy…like every LSD I have done this winter. The forecast was for snow showers. Fun fun.

So to mix things up, I wanted do run the route that I used when I was training for my other half marathons (running from my house into town and back I did not discover the bike trails until Nov 2011.)

When I got up it was in the 20’s, the teens with the wind chill and snowing!  My hubby convinced that it would be too dangerous to run in the road with the snow so I drove to the Corning bike trail.

Though the snow wasn’t sticking to the roads, it was sticking to the trail and it was snow-covered and very slippery.

So Plan B: back to Delmar and run in the roads.

3-3-13b

not too thrilled with this weather

I ran on the roads for 3 miles and turned around.

3-3-13a

pretty dreary – the road was wet but clear of snow

I usually run shorter distances in these neighborhoods so this run took me to roads I had never been on.

3-3-13c

saw farms

who knew

who knew?

After 6 miles, I was half done but felt totally done.  I stopped at my car for water & fuel and then headed out for 6 more.  This time I ran in the other direction for 3 miles before turning around.

I must say that the first 6 miles were painless but now my right foot started to hurt.  As always, it was bearable and the pain would come and go.  But at mile 9 (my turn around point), my ankle started to hurt… a lot.  It hurt in the front and was getting stiff so it was hard to run without limping.  Yes, I should have walked at this point but somehow I made my way back to my car.

12 painful slow miles done!!! It took me 2:26:xx and the 2nd half was a lot slower than the first.

This long run made me wonder whether I was capable of doing a half marathon.  Was I in lala land about my ankle???  Could I really run long races ever again??

I went home, took ibuprofen and iced it… it was still sore.

To take my mind off of it, I went to the movies with my running friend Mary (she is running the same half).  She tried to boost my confidence.  And she did.  If my ankle hurts, I’ll rest until the half and then the for the race, I will walk as much of it as I have to. I will get that medal!!

On a shopping note – look what I picked up yesterday:

3 Things Thursday: Winter, Diet & Anna

running-cartoon

Reverse the roles: my hubby is the women & I am the guy

1. The forecast again was for snow yesterday and rain today so although I had worked 11 boring hours at the bar exam on Tuesday, I dragged myself to the bike trail (it was nearby) and ran (sorta) 6 miles.  It was late and I was extremely tired but I just had to do it.

It was getting dark when I arrived so I brought a flash light. Then it got really dark (there are no lights) and kinda creepy to be alone on this trail.

dark run

So after 3 miles, I got back in the car and finished my run under the street lights of Delmar.  I am so glad that I did it.  On Wednesday, I woke up to snow.

feb27

It quickly turned to rain and my run turned into 3 ugly miles on the treadmill after work.

2. In the theme of healthy eating, my work had a Salad Bowl Potluck lunch yesterday. Everyone brought a salad ingredient and you just added what you wanted to make a big salad.  It was fun.

so yummy!

It would have been even more healthy if I didn’t have this snack before lunch.

ccbread

I was happy until I read that it had 480 calories and didn’t really taste that good.

And I went out to dinner with friends…at a Lebanese restaurant. The food was great, too. (The waiter took a liking to us and gave us free appetizers and free coffee.)

I had Mixed Schawarma (and took 1/2 home)

3.  Anna from Russia is Back in the USA for a short vacation.  She arrived in NYC on Tuesday. She is going to DC and then returning to NYC.  I plan to see her next Wednesday.  Can’t wait!!
