Weekly Run Down for 6.30.24-7.7.24: Welcome July!

The summer is flying by…

Last Week –

  • Sunday – The early morning rain stopped after I came home from the gym and we had a lovely day on Lake George.

sunshine, little breeze, lunch/beer and I read a whole book= 🙂 (and ice cream after. LOL)

  • Monday – I woke up to rain (again) so I postponed my run until after work.

a sweaty one… I so wish I had run in the morning

  • Tuesday – Too busy to run before work… but then my Internet went down so I had to race to work.  As a result, I had no time to pack running clothes.

After work, I rushed home to change clothes and meet friends to walk on the rail trail.

No RUN!!!

  • Wednesday – Rest Day before tomorrow’s race. I did go to the gym for a quick run before work (to make up for the skipped run the day before)

brought to you by flowers and cooler temps

and then met my BFF for a walk after work after a quick visit to see my granddaughter.

walking soon?

  • Thursday – For the 4th year in a row I ran the Firecracker 4.

It was great to have a few friends join me and to see so many runners that I knew there.

The race was followed by drinks, lunch and great conversation.

  • Friday – Day Off so I could also participate in the Lake George Hike-athon again.

in the rain in 2022

This year, I invited Deirdre and Kevin and I chose Cat Mountain. It was longer and more challenging that previous hikes. and then we would join my hubby for some boating on Lake George.

Well, unfortunately Deirdre got sick and they cancelled.

I was tired and had climbed Cat Mountain many times so I decided to skip the hike and just drive up to the lake.

We barbecued, swam, napped and had a relaxing day.

  • Saturday – Long Run Day. My last week of only 6 miles.

We woke up to thunderstorms… but they were short-lived and I’ve never sweat so much during a run.

sooo humid!!!!

  • Sunday – Again the gym… not sure what is planned for the rest of the day…

This Coming Week on the Run –

  • Monday – DAY OFF, run, hike w/friends
  • Tuesday – GYM, run, walk
  • Wednesday – run

Weekly Run Down for 6.23.24-6.30.24: Just a Quick One

That is a work trip to NYC… only 2 nights.

Last Week –

  • Sunday – I took an early train down to NYC with a friend.

It was hot AF but we managed to have a nice time hanging out on Governor’s Island.

She left that evening to visit my college roommate in the Hamptons.

Too bad I was stuck working.

  • Monday – After a long work day in Jamaica Queens, I returned to my hotel, changed into running clothes and headed by subway to Central Park.

It was so windy but it felt great compared to the heat and humidity of the day before.

  • Tuesday – Just a work day and then the train home.
  • Wednesday – I dragged myself out of bed and went for a run in the ‘hood before work.

  • Thursday – Another early morning run… today I had more time and drove to the rail trail…

And then after work, I met up with my tennis friends.  This month we went to a Salt Den and then out to dinner.

Honestly, not impressed with the Salt Den but glad I tried it…

  • Friday – Back to the gym before work and just mah jongg (at my house) in the evening.
  • Saturday – Long Run Day and Brunch.

Still run/walking a leisurely 6 miles before I get serious with marathon training…

Woke up to pouring rain so decided to wait a little while and then rain or shine, just do it…

and the rain stopped!!!

Weekly Run Down for 6.16.24-6.23.24: Heating Up!!

Summer arrived with a vengeance… over 90 degrees most of the week.

Last Week –

  • Sunday – I had not been to the gym in a week so I was glad to be back on those machines

Not that warm out yet but a lovely day to be out on the lake…

my hubby is wearing the hat I won at the 5k the day before… we had a barbecue and I read anther good book (The Mystery Guest)

  • Monday – DAY OFF – Recovering from my week in NYC and started the day (before it got warm) with a run.  Because I skipped my long run on Saturday, I ran 3 miles in the ‘hood followed by 3 more with a friend.

selfie fail but we did try a new place for coffee.

I did lots of errands and got ready for my guest who would be arriving on Wednesday…

I visited with my granddaughter…

9 mos old!

and finally met up with my BFF for a walk.

  • Tuesday – A quick trip to the gym before work…

and a steamy walk with a friend after work.  Searching for shade, we walked at the Arboretum rather than the rail trail.

warm, humid and buggy but pretty…

  • Wednesday – DAY OFF to celebrate Juneteenth…

Unfortunately the gym was closed so I went for a very early run along the river…

I was glad to have company to motivate me to get out of bed but it was slow (my friend’s knee was bothering her)

And then my guest arrived….

yup, another tuxedo kitten to keep Diamond (whom he hasn’t met yet) company… he is very sweet

I spent the afternoon cooling off in a running friend’s pool.

Plan B – Take my walk in the mall (due to the heat and threat of thunderstorms)

  • Thursday – I dragged myself out of bed to get in my run… there was no way I would run after work when it was almost 100 degrees. Again I had company…Yay!

there’s a Pride event this weekend

In the evening, I went to a wine tasting fundraiser… it was to raise $$ for the organization that saves stray kittens/cats (where I got my latest cat).

it was very warm there and we didn’t win any of the raffles but we tasted many local wines and enjoyed the appetizers and cat-themed desserts.

  • Friday – Back to the gym before work and just mah jongg in the evening.
  • Saturday – Long Run Day and Brunch.  Still not long and enjoying that it’s not.

But having FOMO because I usually run a race in Lake George today.

I skipped that race because the hubby and I had to re-schedule our boating on the lake to today.

no rain yet but sooooo humid!!

With all the thunderstorms in the area, we had to cancel boating for this weekend.

it poured most of the afternoon

  • Sunday – Early train to NYC (for work).

My tennis friend is joining me and we plan to spend the day together before she heads out to the Hamptons.

This Coming Week on the Run –

Weekly Run Down for 6.9.24-6.16.24: Back You Know Where…

Yup, FIVE days in NYC (for work)…

Lots of hours spent working…

Of course, I always try to squeeze in a run or some social activity in the evening.

As they say:  All work and no play…

Last Week –

  • Sunday – I was hoping to spend the day on the lake, reading and relaxing.

I woke up to pouring rain so I went to the gym.  I spent even more time there than normal (walking 15 laps on the track).

I bought sandwiches in case the rain stopped and we could spend some up on Lake George.

I know the garden and lawn needs rain but enough already…

And yes, the rain finally stopped.. a little breezy and cooler but no complaints on the views…

  • Monday – I took an early train to NYC (for work the next day.)

I checked into my hotel, changed into running clothes and headed out…

I planned on taking the subway uptown and then run back along the Hudson to meet my friend but there were delays so I ran there instead…

yes my running friend has a broken foot so we just spent hours chatting…

  • Tuesday – Long work day in Jamaica, Queens.

Instead of rushing back to Manhattan to run, I went to the theater…

it was excellent!!

  • Wednesday – Another long day in Jamaica.

Tonight I had dinner plans with a college friend.

Fortunately, she couldn’t meet until later so I got in a few miles near Hudson Yards and along the Hudson

my hotel went all out for Pride week

and then I met Cari (where she works) and we walked together to my college friend’s apartment…

dinner and drinks with a view

  • Thursday – Still working all day in Jamaica…

I had dinner plans with a friend but they fell through… so I took advantage of the extra time and took the subway to the Harlem end of Central Park…

I just ran/walked around until the sun was going down…

  • Friday – After work, I rushed back to Manhattan to catch my train home.
  • Saturday – Father’s Day Home Run 5k.

Yes, I was pooped after the week in NYC but I’ve run this race with my friend Heidi the last few years

and without thinking, I signed up again.

I dragged myself out of bed and I was so glad that I did.  This small local race has so many perks: tech shirt, post race barbecue, nice age group prizes, 4 free tix to a baseball game, free ticket to the strawberry & wine festival…

And I bumped into so many runners that I knew…

though my time was a race PW, I came in 2nd in my age group… the hat was the prize

Afterward we joined our running friends (who did not race) for brunch (I only had iced coffee).

I gave Heidi my baseball tix and she gave me her festival ticket.

After I showered and changed, I spent the rest of the afternoon at the festival…

tasted so many delicious wines and spirits…

  • Sunday – Hopefully my regularly scheduled program: GYM, day on the lake

This Coming Week on the Run –

  • Monday – DAY OFF, run, walk with BFF
  • Tuesday – GYM, walk with friends
  • Wednesday – DAY OFF, run, pool date
  • Thursday – run, Trail walk charity wine tasting
  • Friday – GYM, mah jongg
  • Saturday Long Run and Brunch, Boating

Weekly Run Down for 6.2.24-6.9.24: Just Getting it Done

Work (and not from home), rain, girls trip, etc.

Some weeks, I’m just happy to get in a run…

Last Week –

  • Sunday –I thought about a run since I had walked the 5k with my friends the day before…

But I decided to keep my plan of Sunday morning at the gym.

The weather was great again and I booked a site on another island on Lake George in advance so we could barbecue. The best part of the day  (besides the food and the ice cream later) was that I was able to read a whole book (The Great Alone by Kristin Hannah)…

  • Monday – I had enough time to run before work…

took a different route as my neighborhood gets boring…

  • Tuesday – Again I started the day with a run …

a friendly cat on the rail trail

and then after work, I met friends to go for a long walk on the rail trail.

  • Wednesday – DAY OFF!!

I forgot that it was Global Running Day and instead of a run, I went to the gym…

A few tennis friends and I planned a day trip today to the NY Botanical Gardens to see:

transforms the Garden through the sights, settings, and scents of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland

It was so beautiful there.

check out my FB page for zillions of pics

  • Thursday – I had to teach live today so I rushed out in order to try to get some miles done before our trail night but had to sit in my car for an hour during a torrential rainstorm.

Fortunately, it stopped in time to get in our trail walk.

  • Friday – Another live teaching day so nothing but mah jongg in the evening my hair appointment.
  • Saturday – Long Run Saturday and Brunch.

There was brunch and a run with my friends but the runs don’t get long for a few weeks.

and it rained for the last 3 miles… (if you can’t tell, that’s a wild turkey and her babies)

  • Sunday – Hopefully my regularly scheduled program: GYM, day on the lake (but maybe not since the forecast calls for rain…)

This Coming Week on the Run –

  • Monday – train to NYC, run
  • Tuesday -run?, Broadway show
  • Wednesday – run?, dinner with a college friend
  • Thursday – run?, dinner with a running friend
  • Friday – train home
  • Saturday Valley Cats Home Run 5k Race

Weekly Run Down for 5.26.24-6.2.24: Trying for Speed?

With my half marathon training over, I thought that I would work on some speed…

But then I had some mysterious thigh pain (which luckily was short-lived).

And yesterday my favorite 5k took place.

So was I fast? What do YOU think?

Last Week –

  • Sunday – First day of boating season. The weather was great and I booked a site on an island in advance so we could barbecue.

Of course, I had FOMO as I was hoping to have run a 10 mile race that morning but we had a nice day and rain was predicted for the next day.

  • Monday – It threatened rain but I went out for a run anyway.

It didn’t rain but I was hoping it would as it was sooo humid.

I did more gardening (never ending, it seems) and still no rain (even the sun came out) but it was quite windy.

Since I thought it would be a rainy day, I had made plans to meet a friend for a late lunch and then go to the movies. Perfect planning as it poured while we were in the theater..

it’s about tennis, love, friendship, competition and more…

  • Tuesday – First thing was a gym visit and then after work, I met friends for a walk on the rail trail (we are trying to make this a weekly date.) since my walk got rained out, I visited with my granddaughter.

she’s getting so big… crawling everywhere

After that walk, I met my BFF for a walk at the mall.

  • Wednesday – I actually ran before work…

a pink day!!

and then after work, I went to a dinner that was held to thank the race volunteers.

  • Thursday – Early work stuff forced me to postpone my run until lunch.

channeling the roses to get me moving…

In the evening, the first ARE Trail run of the season was held. It’s supposed to be a run but as you know I am NOT a trail runner so I enlisted a friend to walk it with me.

a perfect night on the trails… the cider was great too.

  • Friday – Back at the gym before work and then a trip to see my chiro.. My thigh felt normal but I figured I’d go one more time.

Instead of mah jongg, I volunteered at the race expo after work and into the evening.

And then I went home to get together my outfit for the race:

#flatme + my cat

It was too late to order pizza (my usual pre-race meal) and I heated up one that I had in the freezer.

It seemed fine until around 2am when I got deathly ill.  I won’t go into details but it was the sickest I’ve ever been.

Food poisoning!?

  • Saturday – Race for Women 5k.

Year #17 for me!!

I really wanted to keep my streak and I had the bibs for 7 of my friends.

I wasn’t sure what to do.  I felt better but I was nervous about my stomach.

Most people would have called it a day but I decided to go.  I met the friends that I was carpooling with.

If felt too sick, I’d wait in the TC tent until my friends finished. If not, I would just walk.  There are a lot of walkers in this race and several of my friends had decided to walk too.

It was a beautiful day to run but I thought it was too dangerous to try.

And so I walked 3.1 miles, chatted with my friends, took lots of photos and ran through the finish line.

not as much fun as running the race but better than staying home

  • Sunday – Hopefully my regularly scheduled program: GYM, day on the lake

This Coming Week on the Run –

  • Monday – run
  • Tuesday -run, walk with friends
  • Wednesday – Day at the NYBG
  • Thursday – Trail run/walk
  • Friday – GYM, hair appt.
  • Saturday Long Run and Brunch
  • Sunday – GYM, boating (weather dependent)

Weekly Run Down for 5.19.24-5.26.24: Taking It Easy

Miles On The Mohawk – this was the 4th year of this 10 mile local race. Did I run it?

The blog post title gives you a hint to the answer.

Last Week –

  • Saturday – After most likely too many miles on the legs on Friday…

we walked to and over the Brooklyn Bridge and then to the expo

Today my two friends and I dragged ourselves out of bed early to run the RBC Brooklyn Half Marathon along with 28k other crazy runners.

Getting to the start was easy peasy from lower Manhattan by subway.

The weather was warmer and sunnier than predicted so we struggled to get to the finish line in Coney Island. But we did it!!

The long crowded subway ride back to the hotel was no fun but we recovered with a hot shower then brunch.

We should have taken a nap but instead we headed uptown and walked around until our celebratory Italian dinner.

Times Square…and unfortunately the Dublin-NY Portal was not working

  • Sunday – Recovery Day in NYC.

I felt fine so my roommate and I got up early and walked 5 miles around the area.

Then we met our two running friends for brunch.

Everyone had to leave so I was solo. I considered a museum but it was so nice out that I decided to take the ferry to Governors Island and stroll there until I had to head to the train station to catch my train home.

the financial district, Battery Park, South Street Seaport, WTC and more…

  • Monday – Day Off.

I started the day at the gym and when my lunch date got cancelled, I decided to spend the day weeding and planting….

That is hard work!!

I thought I’d go for a walk/run since my legs felt fine but I decided to give them another day’s rest.

  • Tuesday – I was tempted to go for a run before work but I waited until lunch.

I should have gone earlier… it was quite warm but I did miss the rain that started soon after

It was also my hubby’s birthday but we decided to wait until the weekend to celebrate.

So I met a friend after work for a walk.

it started out nice but then all of a sudden the skies opened up… we got drenched (even with an umbrella)

and since our walk got shortened, I stopped on the way home to get my hubby an ice cream cake. (He loved it!!)

  • Wednesday – I started the day at the gym. Continued my workout in the garden at lunch.

Summer has arrived!! Like to the tune of 90 degrees!

Today was week 10 of the TC and a trial run of the course was scheduled.

mostly walking due to the heat… (and this mysterious thigh pain)

Afterward, we all gathered for dinner/drinks.

  • Thursday – Live training got cancelled so I was WFH… that gave me a chance to do more gardening at lunch.

My thigh still ached when I went up or down the stairs so I called my chiro and got an immediate appt.

She was out on medical leave but I saw her sub. Long story short was that she thinks it was caused by the ankle (caused by either my recent fall on the tennis courts or sprained ankle not healing properly). She did some painful ART on some trigger points on the IT band.

She said that I could run but gave me things to after (foam roll, clamshells, etc).

ran some but walked often…

  • Friday – Back at the gym before work and amazingly the pain had disappeared.

wearing my race shirt in hopes of being able to run the race next Sat.

More gardening and finally back to mah jongg in the evening.

  • Saturday – I met my friends for a long run run and brunch. Since I just ran a half marathon last weekend and I was worried about that thigh pain, the run wasn’t very long or very fast.

6 miles and NO PAIN!!!

As usual, it was great to catch up with everyone at brunch.

  • Sunday – Miles On The Mohawk.

I made the tough decision to skip this race.  I have always enjoyed the 10 mile distance but decided to save $$ and my body (see Wed).

I’ll add it back to my racing schedule next year.

The good news is that we plan to take our boat out on Lake George today.

pic from last year’s first boating outing

This Coming Week on the Run –

  • Monday – Holiday DAY OFF – run
  • Tuesday – GYM, walk with friends
  • Wednesday – run, volunteer dinner
  • Thursday – run, ARE Trail run/walk (first one)

Weekly Run Down for 5.12.24-5.19.24: It’s Half Marathon Time Again

Half Marathon #3 for 2024 and my last one until September.

It was a half marathon that I’ve already run twice in the RAIN

Was it a dry race this year?

Last Week –

  • Sunday Mother’s Day.

I celebrated on Saturday with lunch out with the hubby, stepson, DIL and grandbaby.

Today I started the day at the gym (it was raining) and then a short visit to see my MIL, BIL, SIL.

Most of the day was spent doing errands, laundry, cooking and WEEDING!!

I had planned on a hike/walk later in the day but then it started raining again…

I ended the day meeting a friend for wine/chat.

  • Monday – Back to work! At least it was WFH. I squeezed in a run at lunch

it was sunny and this run felt so HARD!!

and then celebrated my birthday (again) with dinner out with my BFF.

more birthday sweets!

  • Tuesday – A gym visit …

flowers always brighten my morning

before heading to the office and then to set up for the next day.

had to stop and get my Chocolate cream cold brew…

After work, I met friends for a long walk on the rail tail. All of the sudden, it felt like summer.

  • Wednesday – A long work day since I had to do LIVE teaching.

I missed week 8 but returned to mentor week 9 of the TC group (Their big race is June 1!)

It always rains on Wednesday so true to form, it did all day…

but stopped in time for our run. The beginner group didn’t show so I did run/walk intervals with these 2 ladies and found this rock

  • Thursday – Another early morning gym visit then WFH with a run at lunch (wearing my 2023 Brooklyn shirt)..

humid but just missed the rain. phew

After work, I met my tennis friends for dinner.

Then I went home to pack.

forecast looks OK 🙂

  • Friday – I took an early morning train to NYC (with Sherry & Stan who were running the race and Lisa who would be spectating.) We immediately headed by subway to our hotel, then grabbed some lunch before we headed to the expo to get our bibs/shirts.

We eventually carb loaded on pizza, I planned my outfit and tried to get to bed early.

with added throw always for the chilly AM

  • Saturday – RBC Brooklyn Half Marathon. (No rain!!!)

We all finished (more details in a later post but many pix on FB & IG).

Of course we celebrated….

Weekly Run Down for 5.5.4-5.12.24: Returning Up North a Year Older

I’m back from my tennis vacation in Naples, Florida (check out FB for many pix) and while I was there, I celebrated my birthday.

Last Week –

  • Saturday – We had arrived on Thursday and today we continued with similar activities to Friday.

My friends took a tennis lesson and I went for a short run/walk (the heat and humidity were tough). After my run, I joined them to play doubles.

Then we packed a lunch and headed to the beach where we relaxed, cooled off, read, enjoyed the sunshine (and often walked to a nearby restaurant with a bar).

Eventually we left and in the evening, we went out to dinner.

  • Sunday Tropicool 5k.

Except for last year when I was recovering from a broken foot, I’ve run this race during this vacation.  I’m not sure why since 5ks in the heat are a challenge.  Again it was and again I enjoyed it. I even won my age group.

I rushed home to play tennis with my friends. Then instead of the beach, we visited the Naples Botanical Gardens.

It was lovely and the musical swings were fun… I especially loved the waterlilies

For dinner, we drove to Ft. Myers to go to the Broadway Palm Theatre. The food was great and the show, The Addams Family Musical, was awesome.

  • Monday – As most days, I went for a short run/walk before playing tennis.

We chose a different beach today (Clam Pass) and it was beautiful.

Tonight was book club night. We got take out (instead of going out to a restaurant) and had a great discussion on The Heaven and Earth Grocery Store.

  • Tuesday – Pretty much the same as the previous morning except that I didn’t play tennis.

In the afternoon, we went back to the beach we visited last week (Vanderbilt).

Tonight was my favorite dinner yet. We ate at a nice French restaurant (with Annie, the lady from whom we rent each year.)

  • Wednesday – This morning, I went for a long walk instead of a run and then played tennis.

Since this was our last night, I wanted to see a sunset. So we went to the beach we visited on Monday since it had a restaurant.

We spent the afternoon there and even stayed for dinner.

And as in everyday, the weather was perfect. The sunset was gorgeous.

  • Thursday – MY BIRTHDAY!  Several of my friends had to leave early. But I still enjoyed being on vacation on my birthday.

Of course I had to run/walk 7.1k (more walk than run) and then get my free coffee.

Afterward, we packed up, went out to lunch and then headed to the airport.

Happily, the flights home were uneventful.

  • Friday – I took the day off from work to recover from my vacation.

I went to the gym first thing.

After unpacking and laundry, I took a quick trip to Washington Park to check out the tulips.

mostly past peak but still beautiful

Then I played mah jongg in the evening.

my surprise b-day cake!!

  • Saturday – Long Run and Brunch Day.

I had FOMO today since there were two races that I had wanted to run.

But I had been really slacking off on my long runs and I have a half marathon in ONE week!

I got to the rail trail early to run a few miles with Barbara and then was joined by others.

It was hard but I got it done.

Weekly Run Down for 4.28.24-5.5.24: Tennis Anyone?

I used to be really into tennis.

August 2010 – Playing Tennis in USTA 3.0 State Championships

But once I started running, I’ve played less and less and now I don’t play at all…

…that is except during my annual vacation in Naples, Florida. Then I play everyday…

Last Week –

  • Sunday – I had elaborate fitness plans for today…

I had wanted to go to the gym first thing… then at some point in the day finish my long run (that began the day before) and since it was such a nice day, go for a walk or easy hike on a nearby trail.

Well, none of that happened… and sometimes life gets in the way.

My hubby is still depressed about losing our cat so we went cat shopping all morning.

Almost got one (but someone beat us to him) but I was relieved since truthfully, I am ok with ONE cat.  She’s perfect.

The rest of the day was spent re-potting plants, laundry, grocery shopping, other errands and cooking meals for the week.

When I was finally ready to head out, it had started raining.

  • Monday – A busy work day.  No time to get to the gym before work but I did get outside for a run after work (finally.)

and the temps are warming up

  • Tuesday – I got up super early and headed to the gym and also had time to squeeze in a run at lunch since I had a hair appointment after work.

the predicted rain never happened but it was windy and muggy…

The forecast was wrong and it did rain all evening.

  • Wednesday – Back to the gym.  It would be awhile until I got there again…

I packed during lunch. And after work, I went to mentor week 7 participants of the TC group.

I had to go into the office so on the way home, I planned to stop and run,  then pack in the evening (instead of my mentoring gig.)

A trainer called in sick and so I had to rush home to do his training. Hence, no lunch run.

Plan C:  After my training, pack, join the TC group, do some last minute errands and try to go to bed early.

in one week, we went from winter to summer (70’s today)

  • Thursday – We took a very early flight to Fort Myers, Florida and then we rented 2 vans and drove to our villas at World Tennis Center in Naples.

We pretty much have a set routine since we (10 of us) have done this every May since 2005.

The first day, we stopped and had lunch, got settled in our villas, hung out at the pool, went out to dinner. After dinner, we headed to the grocery store (to buy the basics for breakfast and lunches) before we crashed at home for the evening.

  • Friday & Saturday – My friends took a tennis lesson first thing in the morning. I went for a run and then I joined them to play doubles.

2022 (but most likely the same)

After tennis, we changed into bathing suits and drove to the beach where we spent the afternoon relaxing and deciding which restaurant to go to for dinner.

2023 (but most likely the same)
