Run Off That Turkey 5K race report

I wasn’t planning on running a race today.

Yesterday was a beautiful day…cold but beautiful. So on my rest day, I couldn’t keep myself indoors.  The problem was where to run.

The streets and sidewalks were slippery and snow-covered.

So I drove to a bike path hoping it would be clear.

It wasn’t.  Just part of it was so I couldn’t run very far and had to head out onto the streets.  But it was so nice out…

I came home wondering about whether or not I should go to my last Turkey Trot Group run this morning.  It is at the RPI campus and it is very hilly.  Would it be safe to run there?

So I did what any race-addicted runner would do, I signed up for a 5K.   I assumed that for a race, the course would be clear and I could get in a good run. (The group run started at 8:30 am and the race at 10 am…. it would be warmer, as well.)

I ran this race back in 2011 and finished at 28:11.

After running 9 miles in 2 days, I just wanted to get a good run in. I had no idea what my legs would be able to do.

And it was FREEZING!!! In the single digits when I got up and it warmed up to the teens when I left but the sun went in.

The race started at 10 am and I knew where it was so I left around 9:00 am. (I was glad that I decided not to run at 8:30 and got to sleep in and wait for it to “warm” up.)

I dressed similar to what I wore for the Turkey Trot except that I wore tights instead of capris & compression socks and a warmer hat plus a fleece vest as an extra layer.

Once I arrived, I realized that it started at the elementary school not at the church as it did last time.  I was hoping that the course was the same.

I remember that it was an out & back course on village and country roads and that it ended running uphill.

I hung out with some familiar faces….the 2 older women that run every weekend.  We chatted since I hadn’t seen them in a while.

IMG_4416

we got gloves instead of a shirt

I also met a 40ish women who was running her second race.  She ran her first 5k with no training and finished in 27 minutes.  She was wondering about the course and how she could run fast.  I had a hard time relating to someone who thought 27 minutes was slow but I humored her.

Eventually we headed to the start.  There were close 200 runners. And we were all freezing while waiting to start.  I moved close to the front since there were no chips.

The course was pretty with the snow on the trees and the mountains (Helderbergs) in the distance.  It was cold!!! I had a hard time breathing or maybe it was the weariness in my legs but I didn’t feel like I could run fast.  My new “young” friend sprinted ahead but I could see her the whole time.

The course seem flatter than last time. (Maybe I am in better shape from all those hills in Troy.)  The problem was that you had to keep an eye out for icy spots and you couldn’t run the tangents since the turns were covered with ice.

I couldn’t wait to finish since my face was frozen & I couldn’t feel my fingers. I ran the whole thing.  I was too cold to stop for water. (There weren’t any volunteers. You had to pour your own.)

And as I suspected, this was one of my slower races of recent.  I crossed at 28:16. Not too shabby.  Things considered.

IMG_4414

I went inside to warm up…there was only cookies, bananas & water.  The problem with non-chipped races is that it takes forever to figure out the awards.

In the meantime, they had raffles prizes. (I was one of the few who didn’t win.)

rott

But I did win 1st in my age group! Yay!

Race Splits:

mile 1 – 8:54
mile 2 – 9:16
mile 3 – 9:19
.14 – 8:33

Being that I didn’t register until yesterday, I didn’t have any goals other than run a good race and have fun.

Despite the cold, I enjoyed the race and I am glad that I “ran off that turkey.”

IMG_1264

I made these when I got home

Happy Running!  Did you run off that turkey?

Falling Leaves 5K race recap

IMG_3984

Believe it or not, this is NOT a NEW race. I have run it before.

I registered for this race on a whim. (No surprise there.)

photo from 2009 -the water was so much higher

It sounded scenic and it was north of my house so I could continue up to the marina if the weather cooperated.

Then I read my recap of the race from 2009:

The race started up a STEEP hill and then went down it.  I thought I was done but it continued to go up and down hills throughout the course.  I walked twice and said to myself:  NEVER AGAIN!! Too tough a course for me…

Great, a hilly course! Maybe in 5 years, I am better with hills. (Probably not).

Oh well, I have never regretted running a race.

I did win my age group but that was 5 years ago. Now I am in the 60+ age group. (Hate that!)

Again, rain was predicted.  I got lucky last weekend. And I got lucky again…just cloudy and cool.

It’s this type of weather that you don’t know what to wear.  I hate to overdress. I will resist wearing tights, capris or long sleeve shirts, half zips, etc. as long as I can.

I have been running lately with a skirt, knee socks and a short sleeve shirt .(Sadly have passed on wearing tanks lately.) I have been cold at first but warm up nicely.

However, today the temps were in the 40s…brrr! So I gave in and wore a long sleeve shirt but brought a short sleeve shirt for later.

The race started at 10am so I planned to get there around 9:30am so I left my house at 8:45am.

I got there in plenty of time (got the last parking spot in the lot) and it was very chilly waiting for the race to begin. I saw my Turkey Trot Training group coach who was doing the race timing. We chatted for a bit.  I told him that I was going to win my age group 🙂

Finally it was time to take off my jacket and start the race.  There were about 150 runners..a nice size for a local race on this busy weekend.

Like I remembered, the race started with running up a steep hill.

IMG_3983

Maybe it was the cold but my legs were very stiff and I had a hard time moving for the first mile.  I glanced down at my Garmin and I couldn’t believe how slow I was running.

photo from 2012 race

After the downhill from the first hill, the second mile was a long long incline.  I got into a groove finally and believe it or not, I never walked during the race.

Eventually we turned around but it still didn’t ever feel like we were running downhill until the end.

IMG_3990

I finally picked up steam during mile 3 and finished with a decent time.

27:46!

That was a second faster than last week on a flat course.

My race goals were almost the same as all my other 5Ks:

  • run each mile under 10 min. YES! even mile 3 under 9 min!!!!
  • run the whole thing.  Yes! Finally.
  • win a AG award.  YES! 1st.
  • have fun & stay healthy. YES!

Splits:
mile 1 – 9:08
mile 2 – 9:18
mile 3 – 8:46
.1  – 7:01

IMG_3985

done and happy!

I actually didn’t know anyone at this race. But the food kept me occupied.

IMG_3987

lots of homemade pumpkin treats – yum!

And I won first in my age group (60+).  I am not proud to say that I was the ONLY one in my age group.

fl5k

IMG_3991

At the conclusion of the awards, they had raffle prizes (gift certificates to local restaurants).  I have never seen so many at a race. They called bib numbers for over a 1/2 hour. I think I was the only one there not to win anything.  I did eat my weight in pumpkin cookies, bread and cupcakes 🙂

After the race, like last time, with only 2 weeks until the Perfect 10 miler race, I wanted to continue running. I wanted some place not too far but scenic enough so I wouldn’t mind running extra miles. Last week’s location was perfect but I wanted something different so I chose the Colonie Town Park.

This is the starting point for the Mohawk-Hudson Half Marathon tomorrow (which I ran last year.) I kinda wish I was since so many local runners are running it but I have decided to not repeat half marathons.

mhrhm1

last year in the park

I have run on the bike path before but never through the park so I started that way.

IMG_3995

There were a lot of trails but they were too rocky & leaf-covered to run on.

IMG_3997

So I ran on the road.

IMG_4003

Eventually  I came to the Mohawk River.

IMG_4002

I was right across from where I ran last weekend.

IMG_3999

I ran back to the bike path and continued my run. But first, I stopped at my car.  The sun had come out and I changed to a short sleeve shirt.

IMG_4005

The path was pretty and not crowded but there was a fair amount of walkers, runners and bikers.

IMG_4006

I had planned to do an out and back so that my total would be 6.9 miles.

I didn’t get to the end but took a detour to catch a view of the city of Cohoes.

IMG_4008

Then I turned around to drag myself back to my car.

IMG_4009

It was only in the 50s but felt warmer with the sun.

I must note that I’ve never had so many people comment to me while I was running:

  • One guy on a bike said: “Run Forrest, Run!”
  • Another old guy on foot, said: “Take it easy, young lady.”
  • A guy running said: “Keep your arms looser!”

Usually people just smile and wave.

This run was a lot harder than last week’s run of the same distance and it was FLATTER!  Either the 5K tired me out more or it was the shoes…or who knows.  But it was tough!!

I got 10 miles done for the day which made me content.

I ran a race which is always fun!

IMG_4010

On the way home, I stopped at Target.

IMG_4011

but I didn’t buy the pumkin Oreos or the pumpkin chips or any candy!!!

Happy Running! Did you run or race this weekend?

Run for the Roc 5k race recap

I’ve never run this race before.  I signed up because it was a new race for me and it was on Sunday (I had to work & had a party on Saturday).  It also took place in Saratoga where I wanted to run in the park there afterward. And I love the race track.

20140804-113251-41571927.jpg

this past August

When I was a teacher and off for the summer, I used to go to the races often.  Now I just go once for breakfast.

roc5k

As you can see from the map above, the race is run around the race track. It should be pretty flat.

Unfortunately, it was very warm especially for this time of year and the race started at 11 am.

It was sunny and in the 70s. Very warm for this time of year!!

I knew that this would be a crowded race and the kids race and team photo ops would be first so I planned to arrive early. I got there about an hour early, found parking in a big lot and picked up my race packet.

IMG_3838

I had forgotten that you could personalize your bib.  JA is my running buddy. You also got a long sleeve lime green tech shirt. It was nice that they had (many) real bathrooms, massages and a bag check. So I checked my shirt, walked around and watched the kids race.

IMG_3839

finish line for the kids race

It was getting warmer so I tried to drink more water and stay in the shade.

(While I was waiting, my hubby called saying he and my friends were waiting for me on an island in Lake George.  I guess he forgot that the race started so late and of course said “Can’t you just skip it?”  You know what my response was and he agreed to come get me at the marina in a few hours.)

IMG_3841-0

pre-race photo

Then we had to line up.  There were signs for paces and I stood with the 8-9 min milers.  I think there were about 800 runners.

run4roc2014-86

you can see me on the right

The course was very winding.  So I tried to run the tangents but if you did, you were in the sun.

As usual, I went out fast.  It was warm and I found it hard to breathe but I willed myself to not stop until at least the halfway point.  I even skipped the water.

Eventually, I did stop and walk for a while. I hated to do it but when I do, I get a second wind.

I tried not to look at my Garmin but when I did glance at it around mile 2, I got PR thoughts in my brain.

But again during the last mile, I felt the need to walk AGAIN!  I knew I couldn’t finish strong unless I did.

I figured my PR hopes were over and tried to just finish without puking.

As I approached the finish line, I saw 26:XX. I was shocked but couldn’t muster up enough energy to break 27 minutes.

run4roc2014-110

I am coming …

run4roc2014-111

a little closer

Needless to say, I was happy.

I wasn’t very hungry unfortunately because the post-race refreshments were great – the usual bars, yogurt, bananas, apples but also CHOCOLATE MILK, string cheese, homemade PUMPKIN muffins and hot dogs, etc.

I had 2 chocolate milks and took a muffin to go.

I checked the results and saw that I won 2nd in my age group…engraved rocks (run for ROC, get it?)

roc 5k

there were a lot of fast runners in this race.

I took a photo of the award but didn’t stay because they said they would mail it to me.

IMG_3847

Obviously, since my hubby was patiently waiting for me, I couldn’t go to the park and finish my long run 😦 That will have to wait until next weekend.

My race goals were almost the same as all my other 5Ks:

  • run each mile under 10 min. YES! even mile 1 under 9 min!!!!
  • run the whole thing.  NO! but I had a PR!!!!!!!!!!
  • win a AG award.  YES! 2nd.
  • have fun & stay healthy. YES!

Race Splits:

mile 1 – 8:46
mile 2  – 9:05 (walk #1)
mile 3 –  9:05 (walk #2)
.1 – .7:19

27:09 according to my Garmin and officially 27:11 – a PR by 19 seconds!!!!  My last 5K PR was set 4 years ago.

Even though I had positive splits (as usual), I had a faster time than 2 weeks ago when I ran without stopping!?

My day ended as wonderfully as it began.  My hubby picked me up at the marina and we spent the afternoon with friends.

IMG_3856

They had a “Low country boil.”

IMG_3861-0

fish, shrimp, clams, corn, chicken, suadage, etc.

We listened to music, danced and played a trivia game.

IMG_3874

After they left, we hung around for a while and I went to a run/walk on the trail…I think I covered about 2 miles.

IMG_3871

trees are still green here

Then it was time to head back home 😦

IMG_3866

Hopefully this won’t be our last time on the Lake for the season (2 more weekends left.)

I have been blogging for a while so if you read my blog, you probably know everything about me already but if you are new, here are
Seven Things About Me:

1. I started running in April 2008 at the age of 55!! Since then I have run 124 races.  In January 2011, I ran my first of 9 half marathons.

my first half in Naples, Fla.

2. Second to running is my love for tennis.  I started playing seriously about 15 years ago.  The best thing about tennis is the friends that I have made.  Now we do lots of things together that doesn’t even involve playing tennis.

3.  My first profession was that of a French teacher.  I did that for 22 years.  I spent my junior year of college in Nice, France.  I love anything and everything French – art (Monet), music (Celine Dion), food (pain au chocolat), drinks (kir), cafe au lait, Les Miz, etc.

4.  I play mah jongg once a week with a great group of ladies.  My favorite game, however,  is still Scrabble.

playing mah jongg by the Schroon River

5.  I love to travel.  I would do it more if I had the time and the money.  I have been to most countries in Europe (except Ireland) & Israel, Greece & Russia.  China and an African safari are on my bucket list as well as Alaska.

3rd trip to Kursk, Russia

6.  I’m a computer geek.  Luckily I went back to school and got another Masters and I have been working as an Instructional Technologist for the past 16 yrs.  Digital photography is my passion.  I never leave the house without a camera.

7. Finally, Dec 29, 2011 was one of the worst days in my life.  I fell avoiding an ice patch while out running and broke my ankle in several places.  I had a plate and 8 screws put in. It was a very long recovery.  The doctor said that I may play tennis again but probably would not be able to run.  But I proved him wrong!!  I started running after 5 months and starting playing tennis after 8 months.

Mom’s Day 5K Race Report

I always like to race on Mother’s Day. It usually falls around my birthday so I feel I am celebrating that as well.

This is the first year that I was not running in the HMRRC’s Mother’s Day race. I liked it when it was close by and then it moved to Schenectady.

2011 in Delmar

mothersday5k2013

Mary Pat & I at last year’s race in Schenectady

This race has great swag – bag, rose, chocolate fountain, etc.  I would have done it again if there wasn’t a closer race and beside, this is the year of running NEW races.

So today I ran a familiar course (same as last weekend’s) but a new race.

20140511-210541.jpg

I convinced my friend, Mary Pat to run with me again this year. (She has been injured so wasn’t that enthusiastic.) Coincidentally, we both pulled into the parking lot at the same time so we walked over to get our bibs.  And I was still debating on whether or not to do the 5k or the 10K.

20140511-210428.jpg

look at our bib numbers

The weather was picture perfect.  Blue skies and sunshine. A little warmer than I would have liked but I am not complaining. The sunshine was delightful. There was quite a breeze so that kept you cool.

I finally decided on the 5K.  It looked like there were very few running the 10K so I didn’t feel like running alone and it was warm. Also I left my Gu home and I don’t like to run over 5 miles without fuel. So I stuck with my original registration.

I bumped into Valerie again (a runner in my age group who runs many of the same races).  She said her goal is to someday “beat me.”  Great! Now I feel pressure!.

This race was low key. No chips and timing devices. A line on the sidewalk where you started and finished.

The race also started about 15 minutes late while they were marking the course.

Getting ready & starting my watch

As usual, I started off fast and waited to peter out.

20140511-210529.jpg

beautiful day on the river…lots of fisherman

It was warmer than I was used to.  This was my first summer-like temp race.  It was exactly the same course as last weekend.

I was very very thirsty and held out until the turn around to stop for water and walk for awhile.  Ugh! I hate when I do that.

Then I continued slower than before.  On the way back, we were running into the wind.  But it felt good.  I am not sure if it was the heat or that I was running too fast, but I found it hard to breathe.  I stopped and walked at least two more times. And this is only a 5K!!

Finally the finish line was in sight.  I sprinted and tried to finish under 28 minutes but could not muster up enough energy.

Final time was 28:14 (23 out of 134)

Done!

Positive splits! No surprise there.  Not a bad time considering the walking.

The food was just banana halfs and apples.  I missed the HMRRC race’s chocolate fountain, pizza, soup and delicious pastries, etc.

We waited around for awhile but my friend Mary Pat had to leave.  So I hung out with Valerie and some others waiting for the awards. There  were some older women that finished ahead of me but it turned out that they were younger than me. Yay!

20140511-210458.jpg

I dropped off my swag in my car and continued to run some more.

20140511-210553.jpg

Unfortunately it was getting late so I only had time for 2 more miles.  Better than nothing. (My hubby was home waiting to leave.)

The course was nice but I think next year I will return the HMRRC Mother’s Day race in Central Park. (Good food & tech shirts are important.)

I continued my Mother’s Day/Birthday celebration with dinner with my hubby at one of my bucket list restaurants. It’s in the town where we keep our boat in the summer so it’s on the lake (but pretty pricey.)

First, my answers to Lis & Steph’s questions:

Questions:

1. What is your preferred sport, and why do you love it so much?

It used to be tennis but that was before I discovered running. I love the energy that running gives me.  I love the feeling of accomplishment after I finish a run or a race.  I love that I can do it alone or with others, in different places and at almost any time of day. I love that it makes me feel YOUNGER!

2. Tell me about your worst running/fitness related injury.

If you are a faithful reader of my blog, you have heard about this many many times. My worst injury was slipping on the ice during a long solo run and breaking several bones in my ankle, which then required surgery. Besides being painful, there was a lot of doubt about whether or not I would be able to run again.  But I have…along with 8 screws and a plate, I have since completed many races including 2 half marathons.

3. What type of running/workout shoes do you wear? Would you ever try something else?

I currently wear Brooks Adrenalines. I have worn almost every brand and am still searching for the perfect shoe.  So yes, I would try something else.

4. How long have you been pursuing a healthy lifestyle for?

I would say for about 15 years. I was not health conscious or even thought about anything related to a sport until my mid 40’s. Then I started playing tennis and my life was tennis. I started running 6 years ago. I still play tennis once a week but now running is my focus and along with it, I am trying to eat healthy. (That’s a work in progress.)

5. Currently, what are your short term goals vs long term goals?

That’s a tough one.  In the short term, just run several times a week and stay healthy. In the long term, improve my 5K speed to where it was before my ankle injury, improve my half marathon time and work on upper strength and flexibility more.

6. Favorite running/workout gear (not including sneakers)?

It would have to be my Garmin. I love keeping track of my pace, split times and of course, for distance.

7. Finish this sentence: when I’m not running/working out, I’m…

thinking about when I will be running, racing or blogging about running/pacing. Sad, but true.

8. What was the last great book you read?

Eleven Minutes by Paolo Coelho (the author of The Alchemist).  A friend lent it to me and I loved it.

9. What’s your favorite healthy food/meal?

I love oatmeal.  I buy organic oats and add flax seed, brown sugar, raisins, etc.

10. And your favorite non-healthy food?

Ice Cream!!

City of Palm Springs Mayor’s Race Report

jan11

According to the race description: this is “one of the most scenic runs you will ever experience… See the uptown, downtown, historic buildings, parks and the scenic mountain views. ..Raffle prizes, food samples, and a fun flat course make this one of the best! Prizes for every age division. Commemorative photo and medal for every 5K and 10 Mile finisher! Breakfast is included!”

Sounds perfect….except that I had to run 10 MILES!!

I hadn’t run double digits in 3 MONTHS (the day of my half marathon.) I have been loosely training by running about 8 slow run/walk miles each weekend since then. And I have been too busy to run this past week.

best cone ever!

This was our last race together – 4/28/13

But the goal of this race was running a race with Mary and escaping the FRIGID COLD of the Northeast was just a bonus.

Secretly I wanted to finish under 1:50 but since I had never run a 10 mile race before, it was automatically a PR, anyway.

Mary & I had gotten our race packets the night before and even drove the course so we were super prepared.  We even bought matching Lululemon shirts and silver bracelets for luck.

I was really psyched for the race. My first of 2014.

Getting up early was easy if you are from the East coast.  My brain was awake at 4 am and I didn’t have to get up until 5:30.

I had my new race breakfast of oatmeal and herbal tea and we took off around 6:15.

I knew that it would be warm during the race but without the sun up, it was chilly so I wore a jacket.

We arrived early, found a spot in the designated lot and sauntered off to the park where the race was held.  The atmosphere was very festive…lots of health-related booths.

There was a 10 mile race, then a 5 k and then a 1K. The 10 mile started at 8 am and the others starting at 8:30. In total there were about 700 runners but most were in the 5K.

Suzanne Somers was there and we got to meet her.

Soon, it was time to use the porta potty, take one GU, ditch my jacket at baggage check and head to the start.

just waiting…look at that BLUE sky

We were near the front and planned to start together and then Mary since she was training for a marathon would slow down.

I myself was nervous since I pulled a muscle in my right hip/glute while sitting at the pool the day before (reaching back to adjust the chair…duh) and it hurt every time I bent or twisted. I was wondered whether or not it would affect my running. (By the way, my cold was almost gone…yay!)

here we go

Well, it did.  It hurt with every step.  I just ran and prayed that I wouldn’t have to DNF. The views on the course were breath taking.  I even stopped to take a photo which I normally don’t do during a race.

another beautiful bridge

It was warm but felt good and in the desert, so VERY VERY DRY!! I made sure that I had water at every stop. Luckily there were many, at least 5 that I can remember (miles 2, 4, 6, 8, 9).

At one point, it got hilly and my back hurt so I was walking.  A lady came up behind me and pushed me up the hill.  She said “You can do it.  You’re almost there.”

After that, we ran and talked for a while.  It was nice and I forgot about my pain. Eventually, I needed to run faster and lost her.

Believe it or not, around mile 4, the pain went away (at least until after the race.)  Now, I could concentrate on my pace and enjoy the scenery.

Now that I was pain-free, I wanted to finish under 1:50:00.  That meant that I had to maintain a 11 minute pace.  Sounds slow and easy to do but it wasn’t it.  It was very warm and very dry.

I would be under 11 minutes and then I would stop for water and go over.  I ate Gu at mile 4 and mile 8 and that it is hard to do quickly and without walking.

And the only thing about the race that I didn’t like was the traffic.  I was running alone for the most part and when I came to an intersection, I had to stop and wait until they stopped traffic for the runners.  This happened several times. (I even witnessed a car accident.)

Anyway, I maintained my pace and felt a lot better during the last few miles of the race.  I was even passing people. That felt good.

I sprinted through the finish line and crossed at 1:49:55.  I was thrilled.

I grabbed my jacket and water and waited for Mary.

5 minutes later and very happy

We headed to get our free breakfast (fruit & an egg burrito) until the results were posted.

A two medal day.  What could be better?

We then headed back to La Quinta for a post race soak in the hot tub …

So my first race and first destination race of 2014 was a success.  I had lots of fun and even won an AG award.  (The pain in my hip is slowly going away.)

20140107-104006.jpg

If you are leading  in the standings, whether it is overall or age group, you may win prizes! The prizes can be anything from gift cards to running related items!

My prize is worth a big $5 but at least I won something. (The number of winners and prize values in your age group is dependent on the total number of participants in your age group.)

So you may win a prize even if you are not fast.  That is cool!

The Spring series goes from January 1, 2014 to June 30, 2014. The prize pool has gone up from $575 to $1150. You can also find and register for races through Active.com from this site.
