It’s that time again. Time to get things off my chest with Marcia’s Runfessions at Marcia’s Healthy Slice…
And the last one for this year!!
1. Obviously the half marathon is my favorite distance. Hey, I’ve run 53. I toyed again with the goal of one half marathon each month. But it’s too difficult to find races in the summer months. I runfess… I could run virtual ones but I’m so over them!!
2. I had previously mentioned that I had a choice between two NYC half marathons in January – Frozen Penguin (Jan 9) or Fred LeBow (Jan 23). Both races have the basically the same Central Park course. Although it was more expensive, the date worked better and so I chose Frozen Penguin. I runfess… I chose the wrong one!!
3. There was no deferral or refund for the Frozen Penguin but you were given the choice of running the 5k or another one of their half marathons – Queens Half in April or Central Park Half in February. I runfess… I half heartedly chose Central Park because I didn’t want to waste the $80 that I paid. But it’s only 2 weeks after the half marathon that I am running in Florida. Sigh!
4. So with no half marathons scheduled for December and January, I’m losing my weekend long run mojo. I runfess… I even considered signing up for the Fred LeBow Half Marathon. I didn’t sign up (but I did book an hotel just in case).
** Update – I signed up for Fred LeBow!!!!!
5. When the NYC Half Marathon was cancelled in 2020, I had the choice of deferring or getting a refund. If you deferred, you would still have to pay to run it in 2021. I chose a refund and ran it virtually. $290 to run a half marathon!? Again it was cancelled but now the race will happen in March of 2022. It seemed that everyone chose the deferral option. I runfess… I got FOMO and did enter the lottery.
** Update – I was not selected in the 2022 Lottery!!!!
I runfess… that instead I signed up for half marathons in April (Helderberg to Hudson) and May (Steel Rail). And together ($45+$75), I spent less than for NYC ($130) with no hotel or travel expenses since both races are local.

…………………….April 16, 2022………………………..

Steel Rail Half Marathon – May 22, 2022 (in MA)

Hmm. I’m running a half in Maine in Oct. I ran one in NH in oct last year.
There’s the dash 5k in Nov in nyc.

You are on a half marathon roll! I’ve only got one on the calendar so far – deferred from this year – on Memorial Day weekend. As Deborah said, I’m looking for a couple of fun fall options.

I have a 10 miler on Memorial day weekend.
As I said to Deborah:

Hope to meet-up maybe this year. Surftown was fun.

You are a Half Marathon addict! Gosh, the NYC Half has gotten expensive. It was a great experience for me — even though I broke a crown on my frozen Gu chew ….
Happy New Year!

Yes, I can’t eat GU chews except in the summer. lol
The NYC marathon is twice as expensive!
But the other smaller NYRR halfs are only $35 I think.

Ugh so sorry about all the race upheaval. It’s virtually impossible to make a good decision in the age of COVID. Yowza on the $290. When will we reach the breaking point on race fees?? Happy New Year Darlene!

$145 and then to defer, you pay another $145. OTOH, NYRR and other racing orgs. have lost so much money during COVID.

My most expensive half was also my first (Vegas) but about half the price of the NYC races. Of course that’s also 10 years ago now.
Choosing races right now is just a game of russian roulette, it seems.

At least with NYC races, you have to show proof of vaccines now.

Well, at least it sounds like you’ve got two really fun races coming up- Fred Lebow and Central Park half. Plus the Florida race! your 2022 is off to a roaring start.
And $290 to run a half marathon seems outrageous, but that’s NYC!

As I said to Marcia – $145 to sign up & if you defer, another $145 to sign up again.
Not sure if both races are fun but I get to go to NYC for a weekend.

Wow, you signed up for a lot of races! I’m afraid to commit to too many races right now. I’m going to wait and sign up closer to the actual dates. I do not want to do any virtual races!

Same. I’m so over virtual races. I’m hoping that these races happen. In NYC you have to be vaccinated. That’s a good thing.

Mine is spinning too if that makes you feel better. Hoping that COVID doesn’t get worse and I get to run them.

I’m envious of how many options you have for half marathons in your area, and they all seem to be pretty nice! But wow, the NYC half marathon is way too expensive! I can’t wait to see how your races go!

It’s $130 for members if you get in the lottery. Hope I do get to race. We’ll see.

You have planned many races.
I noticed that the fee is always more expensive in this period or that the swag is not so rich as in the past.
Half Marathon was my favorite race before all the injures. I have run 30 half but unfortunately the last was 10 years ago!

30 is a lot. At least you can still run shorter races. Hope you have some fun ones in 2022.

I have one half on my calendar. It’s the same weekend as yours. That’s a lot of shuffling of plans for you but I know you will get it all sorted out.

I know. It didn’t used to be this complicated.
I thought your race was the weekend before. Which one are you doing?
We have a plan one together one year.

I am excited to see you race! I only have one race I want to do but haven’t signed up yet. I am waiting for the worst of Winter to pass by before I officially commit.

It depends… sometimes I prefer to pay the cheapest price. Sometimes I can wait and see.
