New shoes!

This is my current collection of shoes:

shoes

4 Brooks, 1 Saucony, 2 Mizuno

But I haven’t bought any new shoes since Oct-Nov. I usually alternate my pink/white Brooks Adrenaline (long runs & races)  and my blue/white Mizuno Sayonara (short runs). My previous favs, the purple/white Brooks Adrenaline & yellow/white Saucony Guide are very worn. The others in the pic are usually just worn for walking.

So I think it is time for new shoes.

I went to FleetFeet and tried on quite a few.

They all felt good.  I was tempted to get an Adidas pair but I didn’t want black & pink (how shallow!).  I could have gotten an pair of Brooks Adrenaline in a different color but the store clerk convinced me to try a light shoe.

I ended up buying these:

New Balance 870W B3

Here’s what they about them:

The evolution of the 870 series continues to deliver the fastness of Revlite and security of the foot during every day runs. Intelligent geometries of the 870V3 allow for a stable footprint with flexibility, torsional stability and a mild post at midstance. Enhanced features such as Tbeam, aid in the stability quotient of a surprisingly light and flexible shoe.

A larger Abzorb crash pad extends from the heel into the midfoot area, ensuring shock absorption for a variety of foot strikes. When transitioning into midstance, the runner is met with ground contact as well as TBeam technology for increased torsional stability and arch support. Dynamic midsole shapes not only create a beautiful sidewall design, but lend themselves to the inherent stability of the shoe.

The 870v3 upper is constructed of a secure, breathable mono mesh and thin film overlays to lock the foot in place and ensure any slight movement is controlled. Dynamic material choices and construction are complimented a range of bold, inspiring colorways. Grounded in performance – the 870v3 is the ideal shoe for runners in need of mild support seeking an exciting, REVlite experience.

You’ll notice that there are no New Balance shoes in my photo. I was hesitant & I will probably still use my Brooks for long training runs.

I ran in them yesterday and they felt fine. My run was the worst.  I could hardly pick my feet up, I was so tired.  I planned on 4 miles and barely made it to 3.  I can’t blame the shoes.  They are lighter than my Brooks. I haven’t been running or playing tennis a lot so I am not sure why?  Maybe the heat & humidity??

My real test will be tomorrow in my 5K race.

Happy Running!  Do you replace your running shoes frequently?  Do you rotate your shoes or wear just one pair until they wear out? Does color matter?

The Important Stuff…The Outfit

philly weather

Philly Forecast

Of course, I have been obsessively checking the weather and hoping for a warm up. It has been a COLD week!!

I have run 6 out of 7 of my previous half marathons in warm weather (at least 60-70 degrees except for the Lake George Half weather debacle.)

Naples, FL

Lake George, NY

Schroon Lake, NY

(black short sleeve top, pink skirt)
Rhinebeck, NY

Santa Clarita, CA

Sarasota Half Marathon

Sarasota, FL

Albany, NY

So what to wear for this half marathon in Philly?

I bought a new pink skirt:

skirt

I have another  pair of black compression socks:

I would love to wear my Lululemon tank:

with a pink baseball cap:

and my Brooks shoes:

If only it were 60-70 degrees. It looks like it will be in the 40’s with WIND and RAIN!!. (The forecast gets worse every time  I check…it started out as being sunny and in the 60s.)

mar 30

Do I need to add a jacket, gloves & tights to my outfit??  Probably YES. UGH!!!

Fingers crossed. Praying that there is NO RAIN!!!!!

Rotate Your Shoes!

I used to think I had a problem:

20130710-133631.jpg

Brooks Adrenaline – broke my ankle wearing these 2 years ago, wear them to walk & bike now

Camp Chingachgook Challenge

Mizuno Wave Inspire – sometimes feels to narrow in the toe box – used to like them

20130701-122501.jpg

Brooks Ghost – comfy but neutral not enough support??

coffee

Brooks Adrenalines – they’re ok & I wear now in bad weather

20130717-195808.jpg

Saucony – ran my half in these, also ok

20130724-192745.jpg

Brooks Glycerine – kinda heavy -sometimes weigh me down

capris = spring

used to LOVE these but I turned my foot and broke it the last time I wore them… not enough support?

20131123-123053.jpg

my newest Brooks Adrenaline – I wear them for long runs & races

running in the dark with my new "white" shoes

my  newest Mizuno Sayonaras – they’re light & I wear them for shorter runs

(and in the past I have also worn Asics, Nike, Reebok & New Balance too!!)

What shoes do I wear??

Right now…I wear them all (except the Newtons.)

Back to the fact that I used to think I had a problem wearing so many different running shoes.

Not anymore, a new study suggests that runners who rotate among more than one pair of running shoes are significantly less likely to get injured than those who wear the same model of shoe on every run.

Yay me!

The study also showed that participation in other sports activity also reduced the risk of injury.

so I guess I’ll keep up with the tennis!

Sayonara to Foot Pain?

My foot was no better but no worse…just annoying and often painful. I tried to reduce my running and do everything the Internet recommends for bunions but…

RUNNING WITH PAIN IS NO FUN!

So I went to Dick’s last Thursday and tried on almost every running shoe in order to find the one with the widest toe box.

Yes, I just bought new running shoes and I loved them …

until the foot problem.

stockafeathon13a

ouch..ouch!

I have quite a few pairs of running shoes…all were comfortable at some point and most are pretty worn (but not worn out).

11 - SHOE

1- Mizuno, 4 -Brooks, 1- Saucony

Meet my new friend:

Mizuno Sayonara

Mizuno Sayonara

I was a little nervous about buying a lighter shoe and a neutral shoe. (I liked my Newtons but they wore out quickly & I did break my foot while wearing them.)

So I looked up some info on them.  (You have 90 days to return from Dick’s).  Here’s what I found out:

It’s a “neutral runner that also provides exceptional support for slight over and underpronators.”

The Sayonara was created to be awesome for longer distance training and racing with responsive cushioning but also super light due to the new U4ic midsole foam that’s 30% lighter than the previously used material.

It has a wider toe box than the usually narrow Mizuno fit and the upper part of the shoe is nearly stitchless and made of breathable mesh to make it light and flexible.

I loosened the top laces and they weren’t too bad on my first 3 mile run. I would have worn them on my 6 mile run yesterday but it was rainy and I wanted to run some more with them before a long one.

I still plan to also wear my Brooks…especially for longer runs… and when my foot pain goes away completely.

But for now, I hope to say “Sayonara” to foot pain.

Happy Running!  How do you choose your shoes?  Are you as crazy as me?

Wendy’s Mizunos

rs_293x473-130626092029-634.shoe.ls.62613

These reviews of her Mizuno Wave Rider 16s are very funny.

Here are some examples:

Do you believe in human rights? Do you think a women’s health is a matter for her and her doctor and not for aged religious fundamentalists? Then these are the shoes for you! They will carry you through a marathon and a 13-hour filibuster necessary to protect women from the bigotry and religious intolerance in Texas. Highly recommended for progressive feet!

An essential tool for running down the clock in a state 773 miles wide and 790 miles long! These shoes are perfect for those days when you must spend 13+ hours standing, not lean on your desk or take any breaks – even for meals or to use the bathroom. The snazzy hot pink color brings out your inner badassness and helps you to “humbly give voice to thousands of Texans” and stop a “raw abuse of power” in its tracks. Raise a feminist army and lead the charge when your competitors cheat and change the rules on you. These Mizuno’s are built to protect your feet from mudslinging and add sunshine to the political process. Highly recommended for fierce women and anyone who’s not a Greedy Old Prick (GOP).

Maybe when I am back to running, I’ll give my Mizunos another try.

Happy Running! Can you believe how much press her shoes are getting!

S is for Shopping

shopping

I don’t particularly enjoy shopping but I do love a bargain… which is why I use coupons and tend to shop at Target, Marshalls, TJMax, Peter Harris, etc.

???????????????????????????????

the hat, shirt & shorts were on clearance & had coupons for Olympia Sports

shoes_iaec1313241

these were $50 off at Dick’s

Love the outlets too.

Yesterday, fortunately (or unfortunately for my wallet) I racing nearby. I bought things that I didn’t need but the bargains were too good to pass up.

???????????????????????????????

my feet are now demanding flats – these green & blue ones at the Easy Spirit outlet cost $20 ea,

???????????????????????????????

DressBarn outlet – sweater 50% off, blouse 30% off – for my Florida trip

???????????????????????????????

Jones outlet – reg $34 on sale for $4.99 – had to buy it!

???????????????????????????????

a black running skirt – can’t have too many of those – 25% off at the Reebok outlet

I did not buy anything at the Coach outlet but I was tempted.

I used to buy lots of tennis clothes  (and when I played golf, I bought golf outfits), but since I started running that is what I spend the most of my money on.

a new shirt...it was on sale & I had a coupon...at least I didn't buy another pair of running shoes

another cool shirt that I got on sale & had a coupon!

???????????????????????????????

recent tech shirt bargains: orange $3.88 at Target, green $3 at Walmart

N is for Newtons

110614_Newton-are-you-running-naturally-logo

Back in October, I went to a workshop at FleetFeet on Natural Running. It was sponsored by Newton. I tried on a pair of Newtons and did some running drills with them.  Unfortunately, I was suffering from a foot stress fracture. So it wasn’t a good time to buy.

Why wear Newtons?

Here’s what they say:

  • Action/ReactionTM Technology – Most running shoes utilize passive cushioning like EVA foam, gel or air that lose energy as they are engaged. Like a mattress, these materials flatten under your body weight over time. With Action/ReactionTM technology, you will immediately experience a highly responsive and engaging cushioning that protects and loses less energy with every step you take. Some people have described our cushioning as a “trampoline,” only more fun.
  • Minimal Drop – Newton Running shoes are designed with a minimal “drop” – or height difference – between the height of the heel and the ball of the foot. A more level-to-the-ground platform positions you to support a natural running motion.
  • Biomechanical Sensor Plate – Our feet are sensitive and brilliantly designed to ensure that we step efficiently and protectively. Unfortunately, highly cushioned shoes often obstruct this communication with the ground. Enter our biomechanical sensor plate, which allows you to sense the ground better so you can stride more efficiently and with more stability – some might even say intelligently, the way nature intended. Some call this “neuromuscular” enhancement. The foot senses the ground and sends a message to the brain to tell the muscles what to do.
  • Lightweight Comfort – Our shoes are designed to deliver function at minimal weight. We’ve been told that our shoes make you feel almost like you can fly, and that you can’t help but run fast in them. That’s fun, but we love that our lightweight, comfortable shoes help you pick up your feet and run more actively and naturally – almost as if you had no shoes on at all.

Then last month I went to an expo and Newtons were on sale for 40% off so I bought a pair.  I was training for my half marathon at the time so I kept running with my Sauconys until the race was over.

These are the ones I bought.

newtons

I have been running in them for the past month.  I started with 3 miles on the treadmill and then proceeded to run outside.  My longest run has only been 6 miles (I am not sure that they give my achilles enough support for longer runs…).

capris = spring

I really didn’t have a hard time adjusting to them.  They are light and comfy.  They have a wide toe box and narrow heel. (My orthotics fit nicely too.) I bought them in a bigger size than I am used to wearing and they feel fine.

???????????????????????????????

My only issue is the color (how shallow).  I am drawn to pink, blue & purple (not yellow, orange & neon green). Maybe I need another pair.

Also, they are expensive and showing wear already in the outside of the heels (yes, I drag my feet and wear my shoes out quicker than I’d like).

Pros:

  • My bunion hurts less (in fact I forgot about it in my last 2 races)
  • I feel like I am running faster (They feel lighter & my legs feel less heavy)
  • My race splits have improved (under 10 minutes)
at least I am smiling! (J. Berkeley photo)

running 5 miles in my Newtons!

Cons:

  • Color (I guess I could buy new ones in a different color)
  • Wearing out (I really do try not to drag my feet but they are rapidly wearing on the ouside of the heel)
  • Less support? (Will I have problems with long runs in these?? I have had achilles strain & stress fracture in the past)

Happy Running!  Anyone else wear Newtons?  What do you think?
