Adirondack Distance Run DNS

Sunday, June 21, 2015 –  7:30 a.m.

A ten mile race consisting of rolling hills from Lake George Village to Bolton Landing.

adc

Last year was my first year running this race which was on my bucket list since I began running.

adr3

I loved it. Especially since it ended at the marina where we keep our boat and my friends and my hubby could watch me finish.

This year, I was really looking forward to the race even though I would not be racing under optimal conditions:

  • I hadn’t be running this past week.
  • I ran a half marathon last weekend.
  • I would be coming home late the night before from Denver and would be jet-lagged.

Nevertheless, I laid out my clothes before I left for my trip and planned to give it my best shot and have fun.

My flight from Denver to Baltimore left on time and even arrived early.  I was psyched to not have any flight problems.

But I spoke too soon.

After I landed, it started to storm.

My flight was delayed an hour.

Many of the other flights were delayed or cancelled.

I bumped into Carol whom I  knew from college & her husband.  They had been visiting their son who lives in Baltimore so we hung out together hoping to fly home that night.

The flight got delayed again and again and again.

And eventually it got cancelled along with every flight going out of Baltimore.

I’ll spare all the details but it was an angry scene of thousands of passengers trying to find their luggage, re-book their flights and find lodging for the night.

We were told that all the flights were booked for the next day and the lines for re-booking were miles long and not moving at all.

It also looked next to impossible to get a cab or even find a room for the night.  There weren’t even any rental cars left.

Yeah, we were screwed.

So what my friends decided to do was to have their son come back to the airport to get them, sleep at his apartment and rent a car (outside of the airport) and drive home the next day. (They couldn’t stay longer sadly because Carol had to go to Boston Monday morning for cancer treatments.)

I was so lucky to have bumped into Carol.  They invited me to sleep on the couch and drive back with them the next day.

So instead of arriving home Saturday evening at 10:30 pm and running my favorite race at 7:30 am on Sunday morning, I got home at 4:30 pm on Sunday afternoon.

I am disappointed but it could have been  a lot worse.

Happy Running! Do you have a bucket list race? Ever miss a race due to transportation problems?

HMRRC Winter Series #5 Race Report

HMRRC WS#4 - 15K

HMRRC Winter Series #4 – 15K (same course)

Hudson Mohawk Runners Club sponsors FREE races throughout the winter for its members. The course is pretty boring but free is free.

This weekend, they offered distances of 4M, 10M and 20M.

I usually run 8 miles on the weekend unless I need to do more for half marathon training. My next half isn’t for 11 weeks so I was tempted to take it real easy and do the 4 miler.  Especially since I ran 13.1 miles and 9.3 miles the past two weekends.

But then again 10 miles is only a little more painful than 9.3 so what the hell.

p10d

during my last 10 mile race in October

So I signed up for the 10 miler and hoped my legs wouldn’t be too mad at me.

This would be my 4th 10 miler (all last  year):

2014
Mayor’s Wellness 10m – 1:49:55
Adirondack Distance 10m – 1:44:39
The Perfect 10 Miler (in NJ) – 1:38:45 PR

It looks like I have gotten faster. I expected to have run a similar race to last week.  I finished 9.3 miles in 1:34:39.

So my expectations for this one was to be around 1:40:00 or so. Since the race last Sunday, I had only run several times and they were short ones due to our snow storm and how much I hate the treadmill.

Believe it or not, it was even colder this week than last..

feb1

It was in the teens and single digits with the wind chill….my coldest race so far this year. When I heard that, I considered not going. I was hoping that at least the wind gusts wouldn’t be like last week.

So I bundled up and I left early to get parking since these races are crowded and there are other events going on at UAlbany.  I got there about 45 minutes early.

What I love about this local race is that you get to see a lot of people that you know.

I immediately bumped into my FB friend, Judy. I got to chat with Sue from Adirondack Runners and met some of her friends who tried to talk me into running a full marathon.  They were all running the 4 miler.  Lucky them! I also got to see Patrick, my running coach from the Turkey Trot.  He was the race coordinator this week.

I stayed indoors until the very last minute and then made my out way outside.

It was COLD!!! But sunny like last week (and less wind.) But COLD!!

This is the 5th time that I have run this course (two 15ks, a 10k and a half marathon) this season.  It doesn’t get any better.

The difference this time was that those running the 10 miler started near the tennis courts and the first mile was a loop around the courts before continuing on to the two loops of the State Office campus.

winter5-216

I’m in the pink hat

The sun made the first few miles very pleasant.  I even unzipped my jacket and took off my gloves.

Usually my legs feel very stiff and sluggish for the first few miles but this time, my quads really ached. It may be time to cut back on those long weekend runs.

I trudged along and didn’t walk until the first water stop at mile 4 or so. I took a Gu and walked for awhile. It felt so good to walk but then it was hard to get going.

I just told myself that this was simply a training run and just do it.  (I tried to pretend that the snow was sand and the parking lots ocean – didn’t work last week and worked less this week.)

I ran most of the race alone except at the beginning when we ran with the 4 milers for awhile.  At that point, I ran into someone from an old tennis team.  I hadn’t seen her since 2002 and didn’t know that she was a runner.  We chatted and it was nice to be running with someone.

My lower back didn’t hurt like last week.  This time it was my upper back and left shoulder.  It’s always something. At least I didn’t get blisters.

I walked again and again and took at GU at second water stop around mile 8.

At this point, the wind picked up and I zipped up my jacket and put my gloves back on.

I was so ready to be done and I had the choice of either running faster to end it quicker or just walking to ease the pain of running.

Well, I got a second wind and picked up my speed for awhile. Unfortunately it didn’t last.

The last mile seemed endless and I walked several more times. (At the mile 9 sign, my Garmin said 9.2…ugh…a long 10 miles).

It didn’t seem worth struggling to run.  I knew I wouldn’t PR and I didn’t really care.

winter5-384

Finally I approached the finish line and mustered up enough energy to sprint. I wanted at least to beat 1:43.

And I did, I crossed at 1:42:50.

I couldn’t wait to get inside…

IMG_4901

and have some hot soup (vegetable), bread and then, hot chocolate and cookies.

IMG_4904

yummy

I finished 113 out of  145. They gave awards for the top 2 in each 10 year age group.

ws5

I was 5th among the speedy old ladies.

ws5

Considering how I felt the 2nd half of the race, I was happy with the results.  It was a course PR (my 1st time on this course) and my 2nd fastest 10 miler ever.

Race splits:

mile 1 – 9:39
mile 2 – 9:55
mile 3 – 9:50
mile 4 – 10:10
mile 5 – 10:41 (water stop)
mile 6 – 10:26
mile 7 – 10:30 (short walk)
mile 8 – 10:46 (water stop)
mile 9 – 9:55
mile 10 -10:26 (more walks)
.1 – 7:16

As always, the second half was slower than the first but at least I got it back temporally for mile 9.

I was glad that I ran the race. I never regret running a race.  Especially a free one.

But does it ever get easier?  My pace since my half marathon has gotten slower each time.

As I said before, it’s time to cut back on the long runs .

Next weekend I am going up to Lake George for a 4 mile race.  I am so excited to be leaving the gray, sceneryless HMRCC race courses. (Unfortunately it is an hour north and even colder up there!!)

Happy Running! How you are enduring the winter?  Did you run this weekend?

Tuesdays on the Run: 2015 Race Plans Part 1

Erika @ MCM Mama Runs hosts Tuesdays on the Run with April @ Run the great wide somewhere and Patty @ My no-guilt life!

This week’s topic is: 2015 Race Plans

I run so many races (33 last year) that I am just listing some of the races I plan to run in the first 6 months of 2015:

  • West Palm Beach Half Marathon – Ocean Views and in Florida in the winter. And visiting 4 friends too!

January 17, 2015

  • Polar Cap 4 miler – This hilly race takes in Lake George.  I have done it several times before.  The best part is that I get to run with fellow blogger AJH. Afterwards, I can go to the lake George Winter Carnival also.

February 7, 2015

  • Shamrock 5K – I would have liked to run a longer race like I did last year but this one fit.  I am so excited to be running this race with my friend Mary in CA.

shamrock5k

  • Runnin’ of the Green – this is a very popular local 4 miler.  This year, the location will be different.  Hopefully, it will be as flat as the previous Green Island course.

March 14, 2015

  • Delmar Dash – This is a 5 miler that is very close to where I live and it is flat!!

March 29, 2015

  • Bacon Hill 5k or 10k in Schuylerville, NY. I ran this for the first time last year and loved this country race.

April 11, 2015

  • Cherry Blossom 5k in Niskayuna, NY.  Another race from last year that I enjoyed a lot.

April 26, 2015

  • Spring Run Off 10k in Albany, NY. This race is run along the Hudson River and is a popular local 5k and 10K race.  There is a free pasta dinner the night before. I met some awesome runners last year and hope to see them again.

May 2, 2015

  • Mother’s Day 5K in Schenectady, NY.  I ran this race in 2013 and plan to run again this year.  I may be mentoring a someone from the GirlsontheRun program at this race, too. This 5k is very well-organized and has a chocolate fountain afterwards.  Need I say more?

md5k15

  • Freihofer’s Run for Women – This is the only race that I have run every year so I want to keep my streak going.  This year, I signed up to be part of a training group like I did for the Troy Turkey Trot. I am looking forward to running with others.

frw15

  • When I did not get into the Covered Bridges Half Marathon on June 7,  I registered for the first annual Walkway Half Marathon in Poughkeepsie.  The course will include the William R. Steinhaus Dutchess Rail Trail and the Walkway Over the Hudson as well as Marist College and the Hudson Valley Rail Trail.

HALF MARATHON  – June 13, 2015

  • Adirondack Distance Run – It’s a 10-miler.  Rolling hills from Lake George Village to Bolton Landing (where we keep our boat.) I did it last year for the first time and can’t wait to run it again!

2014: My Year in Racing

I’m linking up with Montana from Pretty Lil Mudder and a number of other Girls Gone Sporty members to give out some awards to the races I ran.  Since I ran so many, I had no problem finding a race for each category even though I only ran 2 half marathons and no marathons.

Most Scenic Course –  This was a little difficult to choose…along the river, along the ocean, along a lake, in a park??? But I will pick the Mayor’s Wellness 10 Miler (in Palm Springs) because of the awesome mountain views.

Most Challenging Course – For me, challenging is hills and distance but I think I’ll choose hills.  There were 2 that I ran along Lake George that were hilly but the Adirondack Distance was longer (10 miles) so more challenging.

Best Course Support (aid stations, volunteers, people cheering you on, etc) –

I would probably have give this one to the Stockade-athon.  There were many water stops & volunteers. And the people of Schenectady cheered the runners throughout the course. The photo below was taken by a friend along the course.

Best Expo  – It would have to be the Love Run (in Philly) since it is the only one I went to.  I went with friends and we had a lot of fun – lots of booths, free shirts, hair braiding, massages, etc.

Best Swag – Another tough one. Sometimes I like the shirt, sometimes the medal, sometimes you get other good stuff.  But I would have to pick the Apple Run 5K. You got a bag, shirt and a glass.  Plus the AG awards were plaques.

Most Unique Medal – I guess the most unique medal was the one made out of wood from the Camp Chingachgook 10k. All of my other medals are metal.

Best Post-Race Food/Beverages – I have run a few races that have had a good selection of post race food.  It is important if you spend a lot money on a race and if it is a destination race.  My vote this year goes to the Camp Chingachgook 10k.  They had an awesome barbecue of hamburgers, hot dogs, chicken, etc.

The Perfect 10 Miler had good post-race food as well (just too healthy for me.)

Best Race Shirt– This was easy.  It was the lilac hoodie from the Perfect 10 miler (in NJ.) It is very comfortable.  I have worn it several times already.

Favorite Overall Race – With running 33 races this year, it is certainly hard to pick one.  But if I have to, I’d say it was the Troy Turkey Trot 10k.  The weather cooperated, there was a lot of excitement surrounding the race and I saw a lot of racers that I knew there. It was just fun.  The only thing that would have made it better would have been an Age Group award.  At least, I had a PR.

Race You Are Most Proud of Yourself for Completing  – Half Marathons are tough for me.  I ran one this year in the pouring rain but my award goes to the Saratoga Half Marathon.  It was very very humid and I felt sick the whole race. I wanted to quit several times but toughed it out.

Happy Running! What awards would you give to the races you ran in 2014?
