First Runfessions of Fall

It’s that time again. Time to get things off my chest with Marcia’s Runfessions at Marcia’s Healthy Slice

Sorry, But I still got the NYC Marathon blues…

um… no I didn’t buy any of the 190 pix they took of me!!

  • I runfess…

I am struggling with many mixed emotions regarding my marathon.

Proud. Yes, I did finish 26.2 miles.

Depressed. Yes. I didn’t train so I could walk most of the 26.2 miles.

  • I runfess…

I am not disappointed with my finish time.  Who knew I could walk that fast?

  • I runfess…

I have no idea what caused my calf cramps.

Dehydration? Too fast a walk pace? The screws/plate in my ankle?

I want to know since I never want to experience that pain again in a race.

  •  I runfess…

I thought I was tough.

I’ve run on a broken foot and with a stress fracture.

For the first time ever, I seriously thought about quitting during a race…

glad I didn’t see this guy. LOL

  • I runfess…

I’ve run hundreds of races which includes 66 half marathons.

Yet, this one race really deflated me.

I may have even said “I’m never running again!”

  • I runfess…

I time qualified for the NYC Marathon again in 2024 (thanks to the rainy 2023 Brooklyn Half).

Do I do it again as redemption?  So not to end marathon racing on such a bad note?

I have from February 21 until March 21, 2024 to decide…

Happy Running! Anything to runfess this month? Please share.

  1. Sorry you’re still struggling with all the feelings from NYC. I’ve had my calves seize-up before, and it’s a nightmare how painful that is. For me, I think it was a dehydration/electrolyte deficiency issue because (both timers) it was during very hot race conditions.

  2. I am sorry it turned out to be such a tough day for you. Hope as time goes by you are able to see more of the positives. Happy Thanksgiving

    • I am definitely getting over it… I just needed to vent one more time. It’s hard to accept but the more I race, the more I will have races like that. Such is life. It’s better than not racing at all.

  3. Well, at least you still have your sense of humor (Dory- “oh look, a race!” ha ha…)
It is a bummer that you trained so hard and now feel so bad about how it went. Your finish time really was fast considering how much walking you did! I’ll be interested to see what you decide to do about 2024.

    • Exactly. I walked as fast as I could.

You know that I’ll probably do it again. I’m crazy like that.

I mean I signed up for Ft Lauderdale…

  4. You know you’re a runner when you write about never running again and signing up for another marathon in the same post! It is a dilemma. At least you have some time to decide.

I didn’t realize it was your calves that did you in. I’ve only had my calves cramp near the end of a race (10K) and it was brutal. I think once they start, there’s nothing you can do.

    • Good to know… I was wondering if I should have stopped at a medical tent and have someone stretch them out… I’ve never experienced anything like that and I just could not run but could walk fine. Weird.

  5. We’ve all had pains that come out of nowhere — and then disappear. You may very well never know, but remember, that didn’t happen in your first, so it may not happen again.

It can be hard to shake a disappointing race, for sure, but eventually you will. There will be more races, I’m sure.

  6. Hugs. it’s so hard to have a race that leaves you unsatisfied like that. I have had calf cramps and it’s brutal. They could be from so many things (mine were from needing salt and potassium), but you have time to figure it out so you can kick butt next year! You’ve got this!
