Runfessions for August ’22

It’s that time again. Time to get things off my chest with Marcia’s Runfessions at Marcia’s Healthy Slice

1.  I RUNfess…

Sometimes I double-book myself.  Well, the weekend of Sept 10-11, I may have triple booked myself.

I registered for a 5k on Sept. 10 that I run every year.

My good college friend invited to her house in RI because there is a race there on Sept. 11. Of course, I said “Sure, why not?”

I ran the half several years ago but I’m running a half the weekend before so I would only consider running the 5k.

2019

Finally, FOMO on this NYC event on Sept. 10.  I signed up since it is free.

2.  I RUNfess…

I skipped a 11 mile run in order to run a 5k.

After the race, I had planned to run 8 additional miles but instead:

No regrets…

And my running friend said that the “hay is in the barn.” Let’s hope so.

3.  I RUNfess…

After over 10 years of half marathon training, I’ve recently embraced the Galloway method.  Yup, run/walk intervals… and short intervals. And guess what? When I run this way, I feel like I could run forever and I’m not beat afterward.

4.  I RUNfess…

I only run intervals when I with run other runners.  Since I don’t wear a watch, I have to run whatever intervals, my running partner is running.

5.  I RUNfess…

Even though all my training long runs have been done using run/walk intervals, I don’t plan to run my half marathon that way next Saturday.

I will run my usual positive splits, just running fast and walking when too tired to run fast.

hope to be smiling as I was after this race last year

and one more for good measure:

I RUNfess…

Though I think Age Groups awards are important since they measure your achievement against those at your same age and I find it rude when runners don’t stick around to receive their awards, I did exactly that.

I knew that I had won my age group (and by ONE second) but I was anxious to get to the lake since my hubby was there patiently waiting. (For that reason, I usually run/race on Saturdays.)

the same race last year. where I won 2nd.

Happy Running! Anything to RUNfess this month?  Please share!

  1. So many races, so little time…lol! Can I have some of your energy please? I agree with you on run/walk intervals. I don’t use them all the time, but they’ve certainly helped me out many times!

  2. Glad the run/walk intervals are working well for you! I’ve never used them intentionally (or with any planned rhyme or reason), but I have almost always taken quick walk breaks through the aid stations. Even a short 5-10 second walk gives me a substantial recharge.

  3. run/walk have also helped me a ton over the years. They do work and they do leave you feeling more recovered for the same distance. No shame in using them. So many races, hard to choose!

    • I used to do what you do and I do it during races but this hot humid summer and friends have taken me in a new direction and I like it.

  4. Glad the intervals are working for you. I’ve never intentionally used them either, although I’ve certainly taken random walk breaks. I think I’d be happy to miss an 11 miler for a 5k as well. Haha!

  5. Wait, what??? That’s so weird- we both wrote about the Galloway method. I want to know more! What intervals do you use while training? And why don’t you try those same intervals for the race? I’m very curious about all this! We’ll have to talk more.

    • I do not have them set on my Garmin. And I’m too competitive.

But on long runs in the heat. Love them. Use 45:30 or 60:30. I think I would prefer 90:30. It’s all so personal. My friends use the gym boss for them.

    • You never know. It depends who shows up. I like to cheer on other runners who win. It’s not just about me.

I did the long run the next day. Rarely skip a run if I am not injured.

  6. I feel like Galloway method makes sense! I’m more about breaks as I get older 😉 I’m curious to see how you would do if you raced that way.

I runfess that I ran a 10 mile race last weekend to get points my AG in a local run circuit. The 2nd place person in my AG was 11 minutes behind me! Not a very competitive race – LOL
