Runfessions for October ’20

It’s that time again. Time to get things off my chest with Marcia’s Runfessions at Marcia’s Healthy Slice

1. I runfess…

I signed up for a series of 8 fall virtual 5k races. They were free and I thought that they would motivate to improve my pace and get more serious about running.

They did not.  I grew more disinterested with each one and my pace got slower and I walked more.

Obviously virtual races are not races in my eyes.

2. I runfess…

I also signed up for a virtual half marathon because it was ZOOMA race, the ZOOMA director bought Skirt Sports (I have been, as you know, a Skirt Sports ambassador for many years) and there was great swag.

I am so over paying for virtual races.  I feel bad for the racing companies and charities but no more!!

last one!!

3.I runfess…

I’m struggling with the fact several of my running friends have become walking friends (and my consistent partner is wintering in Florida).  I know it’s selfish but I like company when I run.  And although there are no races, I still want to keep up with my long runs.

I miss the races we used to run together.

4. I runfess…

I want this pandemic to end so I can travel again.  I have a trip tentatively planned in February but Florida is a hot spot and even if there race happens, I wonder if my Florida friends will let me stay with them.

I know this is where I will want to be in Feb!!

5.I runfess…

I’m pretty nervous about my upcoming “real” half marathon.  I forgot what it was like to race.  I’m pretty sure that it will my slowest one ever.  I don’t really care about that. I just hope it will be still fun and won’t taint my vision of racing.

  1. I agree with you on all points. I think most people (runners anyway) are over virtual races and this whole pandemic by now. Before it seemed like there might be an end in sight around the beginning of next year but now, who knows?

  2. I’m very sad that there is no end in sight for this pandemic. It’s hard to keep getting one’s head about the ongoing cancellations/isolation. I won’t do any virtual race longer than 10k. That’s plenty for me at this point. Ugh.

    • Yes Nov 15. This organization had one already and I guess it went well. We’ll see. Not the same but maybe better than nothing. Not too excited about it. But who knows when there will be a REAL race as we remember them.

  3. I agree, the virtual races are not the same regarding motivation as the IRL ones. I do have to say, “biking” some has been a fun twist to the mix…it’s given me a new challenge. We’re debating rebooking our Florida trip as well… we’d planned on going there in late March thus year, but that didn’t happen. Who knows if 2021 will happen either?

    • I’m so lucky to see my running peeps. There are others that I only see at races. I miss them too. I will just run on Thanksgiving…not supporting any more virtuals at the moment.

  4. I have run 2 local (tiny) 5Ks in person this fall. they were both very low-key because I was running them with my son. I think I would be very nervous about an in-person half too. A friend just asked me to sign up for an in-person half happening next spring in Napa. It is so appealing. I might just take the chance.

  5. There’s an organization here managing to put on small races. I’m just not interested. I do love the swag I got from the 2 virtual races I did. The Scooby Doo long-sleeve is really nice and the Lawyer Have Heart t-shirt is so soft!

  6. It’s tough as I understand how much these organizations are hurting, but I agree, it’s hard to pay for a virtual race…just not the same. I just did an in-person 10k today that was very safe and it was fun to be back in that environment and see all the other runners/racers I recognized from years prior!

  7. I feel the absolute same as you…I’m so over virtual races. Initially I did it as a way to support race companies, but now I’m done. I’ll finish up the virtual races I have already paid for and then I’m done until real racing comes back. If we don’t get a spring season I’ll focus on building speed for short distances like I did this past summer. That was going great until I got injured, so I’d like to get back to that when I heal up. I’ll probably also keep swimming in the rotation. I really like it.
