The Love Run Half Marathon Race Report

092713-loverun1

I heard that Philly was flat but since this is a new race, who knew?

This was the course:

lr course

A post in a RW forum offered this about the course:

The course is incredibly flat and for a non-local will take you through the most scenic parts of the city,  The parts along the river sometimes can be windy, but the side we are running on is a bit more protected with trees.

The water stations (7) seemed to fit in with my racing plan – walk every 2 miles (water stop) and GU every other water stop. (I hoped that they would not run out for the slower runners.)

When I signed up for this NEW race, who knew that it would be the largest half marathon in the country so far this year!!

I had never run a big race before (1500 racers was probably the largest.) There were supposed to be about 10,000 at this race.

It would have been really nice if the weather  cooperated (especially for Adrienne & Heidi) and it were sunny and warm.

But it didn’t 😦 😦 😦

Anyway, we got up early & Andrea & I had what we ate yesterday for breakfast. It was really difficult to decide what to wear. It wasn’t that cold (40s) but it was windy and it was predicted to rain HARD so we would be getting wet. (The slower you are, the wetter you will be.)

I decided to wear a 3 layers: tank top, a long sleeve shirt & a wind breaker.  I added capris under my skirt and also wore compression socks & a baseball cap. (I put dry clothes in my bag check bag.)

Then we all met in the lobby for a pre-race photo.

20140331-090729.jpg

Andrea, Adrienne, Lisa, Heidi, me & Kevin

It was easy to find the race start…just followed the crowd.  It was chilly & breezy but it was only raining slightly (Fingers were crossed.) I was wearing the $3 poncho that I bought at the expo trying to stay dry until the race began.

We arrived to a BIG crowd.  But everything was very organized.  We checked our bags, agreed on a post-race meeting spot and then it was time to line up. In the crowd, we all got separated except for me & Andrea who started around the 11 min. pace group. (I tossed my poncho in a trash can first….unfortunately others weren’t as considerate… plastic garbage bags were strewn all over the course for the few blocks.)

It took at least 6 minutes to get to the starting line. I wasn’t worried since I had my Garmin and the race was chip-timed.

1798082_684504678254632_1919006174_n

The first four miles through the city streets and the Old City area flew by. There was great crowd support, and I was feeling good. We ran past all the sites that we learned about on the trolley tour. It was really neat.

The rain was still falling lightly.  I was running faster than I would have liked but decided to stay with it.  I knew that I would die cuz I always do.

My informal plan to to keep my pace under 11 (preferably close to 10:30) and walk through ALL the water stops. (My pace definitely slowed the 2nd half of the race).

From miles 4-5 we started to head back out past the start to Boathouse Row and toward Fairmount Park.  I thought the whole course may be flat.  I was wrong here! There was some hills in the park around mile 6, and then a pretty long one.  I decided to run/walk it to save my energy for the rest of the race.

But it was starting to rain harder. Running into the wind with the rain in your face was crappy, but I was glad that my baseball cap  mostly kept of the water out of my face. I put up the hood to keep my neck warm.

lr2

Around mile 7, Andrea caught up with me.  We ran together for a bit but I know she is faster so she went on ahead.

After looping around the park, it was an out and back. You ran in a straight line along the river and then you turned around somewhere around 9 and went in a straight line back the way you came for miles 9-11.

On the way out, you got to see the faster runners.  I kept looking for Lisa or Adrienne or Heidi.  I didn’t see anyone (Lisa said she saw me.)
On the way back, I was happy to see lots of runners behind me.

During these miles,  it started to downpour. I was already wet so I just accepted being soaked. What can you do??  But I was getting colder and colder. My hands & feet were now numb.

I was surprised on how many spectators and volunteers were on the sidelines cheering in this awful weather.  It was nice!

All the water stops had water & Gatorade and one toward the end had Hammer gel. One had gummy bears.

The last few miles were tough.  I was cold, wet and running out of gas.  I tried to plod along and thought that the sooner I finished, the sooner I could get dry.

Believe it or not, there was a short hill before the finish line.  UGH!!

I got through the finish line with nothing.  My feet were too frozen to sprint.  The clock said 2:27:00.

I quickly grabbed my medal and immediately saw Heidi and Kevin.  They finished seconds just after me but started about a minute after before me.

Kevin & Heidi

We grabbed desperately-needed Mylar sheets and walked through the MUD to  the food tent to grab our bag of goodies. There were lakes of mud that couldn’t be avoided.

The little food bags we received were pretty nice – Philly soft pretzel, a banana, some PB&J, Snyder’s potato chips and butterscotch krimpet Tastycakes.  There was a tent with hot chocolate but we were too cold and wet so we instead waded through the mud (that felt like quick sand) to get our checked bags.

1655492_511317095777_1594081758_o

Adrienne did great in her first half!

Then we found our friends (except for Adrienne who was with her hubby). We were all too wet to take photos or even put on any dry clothes. We made our way back in the pouring rain to our hotel. That mile walk seemed to take forever.
20140331-090749.jpg

this is after the walk to the hotel….most of the mud got washed off… they were once pretty!!

Eventually we did all thaw out after a LONG HOT shower and dry clothes. It was funny how many people I saw during the day and at the airport wearing their finisher medals.

20140331-090739.jpg

the “o” in Love spins

Here are my stats:
20140331-090718.jpg

actually overall place was 5012, AG place was 11

Believe it or not, this was a 4 second PR!!! Woo Hoo!

Splits:

mile 1- 10:13
mile 2-  9:39
mile 3 – 10:48 (water)
mile 4 –  10:19
mile 5 –  10:22 (water/gu)
mile 6 –  11:39  – hills!!
mile 7 –  10:45 (water)
mile 8 –  10:16
mile 9 –  11:20 (water/gu)
mile 10 – 11:00
mile 11 – 10:53 (water)
mile 12 – 11:22 (water/gu)
mile 13 – 11:33 – tired
.23 – 9:42

So as you can see some of my miles (6, 9, 11, 12, 13) went over 11 min. My pace the first half was 10:36 but the second half, it was 11:10. I really need to work on my fitness level and not have positive splits.
My Goals were:

A: under 2:22:39
B: under 2:24:14
C: under 2:30:12
D: finish smiling and uninjured

I met them all except I don’t think I was smiling at the finish!

Here’s someone else even happier:

10171057_684474541590979_1472417934_n

She said YES.

After the race, Andrea drove home, the couples took naps and I went out into the rain.  I planned to visit the Barnes Foundation (I love  Impressionist art).  It was sold out so I had lunch there instead and then went to the Rodin museum.

20140331-090709.jpg

mushroom quiche & cream of potato soup – YUM!!!

This was my first big race. And besides the weather, I was very happy. I thought the race was very well-organized.  I loved that you didn’t have to stand in line for anything.  They had lots of volunteers-even in the horrendous weather.  Plenty of water and clocks at every mile. It was a pretty great race and course and if I lived closer, I might do it again.

Here is a portion of the email I just received from the organizers of the race:

March 30th, 1962 holds the record for the most rainfall with about 1.16″.

Until March 30th, 2014 that is… And Yes we put that record to shame with rainfall accumulation of 3″. But it’s going to take a lot more than that to dampen our spirits and our goal to put on an unforgettable Inaugural Love Run.

As many of you gathered on the start line on Sunday, we were thinking “Wow now this is strong community of runners”. It’s hard enough to run 13.1 miles in ideal conditions but to do it in a monsoon…takes a very strong, motivated person. The mental courage it took all of you to step up to that line is something you should remember for the rest of your life.

You are in a small minority of people who could ever accomplish what you did this past Sunday at the Love Run.

**Last day! Don’t forget to enter my PocketFuel giveaway!

Happy Running! Ever run in a big race? Ever run a race in the rain?

Runnin of the Green Race Report

20140126-180211.jpg

I ran this race 3 years ago and really liked it. It is actually my 4 mile PR (38:02).  But back in 2011, I was running faster.

That is the course map.  This is a very popular race.  Around 800 registered and it sold out in 48 hours.

Since I have a half marathon in 2 WEEKS, I was not planning on running this race since this weekend would normally be my 12 mile long run.  But I changed my mind and signed up so I ran 11 last weekend and planned to do my 12 miler Monday morning (taking time off from work.) instead.

I received an e-mail that the parking would be difficult so I left extra early.  I didn’t get a spot in the closest lot but a spot on the street behind the legion hall.  I picked up my race packet and hung out in the legion hall till the start of the race. I bumped into many runners that I knew and we chatted until it was time to start.

20140315-131733.jpg

nice long sleeve women’s tech shirt

Here are some pics from the 2011 race:

You can see that you don’t run this race for the scenery.  Green Island is an old factory town.

The weather seemed colder than I had thought – it was breezy and cloudy.  I decided to wear my green wind breaker & tights.

20140315-131807.jpg

20140315-131721.jpg

with some cute socks

Right before the race started, I ditched my fleece vest (that I had on underneath my jacket) and my gloves.  So glad I did. I was sweating by the end of the race. (It had warmed up to the 40s and the sun even peaked out.)

Right before the start, I bumped into some more familiar faces.

20140315-131830.jpg

SRMs – Karen, Bridget, Felice & Gail (not in photo)

We started together.  Then Felice sped ahead and I ran for a short time with Bridget and Gail.

I couldn’t keep up but just trying kept my first mile fast (for me.)

rotg3

The course, though not scenic, was pretty flat.  Just lots of twists and turns – it kept the course interesting. There are just a few uphills but nothing bad at all.

Running of the Green

J. Berkley photo

In fact, I didn’t walk at all.  I didn’t even stop for water.  Not I didn’t want to, but I wanted a decent time more.

I was really dragging, though, during the last mile and feeling very warm & nauseous.  But when I saw Felice near the finish line, I gave it all I had.

rotg4

38:07 (net time) 38:19 (clock time) (Yay! I met my under 39:59 goal time!!)

Not a PR but much better than I thought I could run.

Split times:

mile 1 – 9:02
mile 2 – 9:36
mile 3-  9:36
mile 4 – 9:44

After you finished, you got a beer glass & a toothbrush.

20140315-131840.jpg

In addition to age group awards, they were giving away 31 gift cards.  So I stuck around chatting with some runners and munching on pizza, bagels, cookies, etc.

No chance for a AG award.  This race attracts the fastest runners in the area.  I didn’t win a gift card either.

I was happy with my finish time (I wish I could run this fast when I am running alone.)

Runnin of the Green is a  fun race that I will probably do annually.

rotg14

I almost finished in the top half (There were about 750 runners).

When I got home, I thought about running more but my Achilles felt a little tight so I decided that it would be best to wait until Monday for my long run.

I did reward myself with this:

Lighthouse 5K Race Report

lh5k

Well, this race took place during my vacation in Flagler Beach, Florida.

All of my running before this trip had been in temperatures between 0 and 30 degrees.  So this definitely would take getting used to, especially the humidity.

Also the race took place at 4:30 pm. Again different than I was accustomed to.

The theme was Las Vegas Nights so the racers were asked to dress in costume. Not being local, I decided to forgo the costume and wear normal running clothes.

I started the day getting up to see the sunrise.  My friends live 2 blocks from the ocean so that was easy.

When I got there and it was cloudy and hazy.  I feared “no sunrise” pictures.

20140303-115653.jpg

But yes, the sunrise was stunning as usual.

20140303-115743.jpg

Then I walked home and had breakfast. And I went out for a walk.  I was tempted to run but decided to keep my legs fresh for the race since I ran 4 miles the day before.

I walked on the road along the beach. The weather was similar to the day before…cool (50s) and breezier as the day progressed…but so nice to be outdoors with NO WIND CHILL and NO SNOW!!

I stopped at the pier for awhile to watch the surfers and painters and then headed home.

DSC00186

20140303-115859.jpg

In the wind, it felt chilly.  Unfortunately, the back of their house which is on the water was in the shade and wind. But in the sun, it was gorgeous.  So I sat outside in the front of their house knitting and  soaking up some Vitamin D.

Eventually my hubby joined me and we decided to go for a walk. This time in the neighborhood where all streets bordered on the water (Halifax River.)

20140303-115919.jpg

20140303-115931.jpg

Then we went out to lunch.  I had to carb load, right? We walked back to the ocean where I had spotted a French bakery/restaurant.

20140303-115810.jpg

Everything looked delicious.  I chose a vanilla latte and marsipone strawberry grilled cheese.

20140303-115832.jpg

with bread pudding for dessert (I shared!)

20140303-115845.jpg

We returned home and hung out in the sun some more (This is what happens when a race is at 4:30 pm.)

Here is when it gets interesting.

My friend’s hubby & my hubby decided to go somewhere for a little while and discovered that the car had a dead battery. So they had to call AAA to get the car started. (Lucky for me that they did since we had time to spare for the race.)

With the car now running, we left for the race which was about 30 miles away. We got a great parking spot and we were there in plenty of time.

before the race

before the race

lh5k

with my hubby & our friends (taken by Daybreak Studios)

We walked around near the water but it was chilly and windy.

20140303-120014.jpg

You can see that I am wearing a jacket and so were other racers. You also should note that people were not dressed in costume either. (Glad I didn’t spend time getting one.)

lh5k2

I decided to leave my jacket off to run the race.  And I was glad I did!!

start

Elvis started the race (taken by Daybreak Studios)

I was actually warm running.  I tried to tell myself that this was fun but if you know me, I wanted a sub-30 finish as soon as I started (At least I have given up the thought of a PR for now.)

That means that I started out fast and couldn’t keep it up.

The course was flat.  And scenic.  There were water views.  I was getting tired as I ran.  I refused to stop, even for water and just willed myself to finish strong (though I felt like I was dying & nauseous.)

I’ll blame it all on the my lack of speed work, running long and slow, the wind, etc etc.

Splits:

mile 1 – 9:28
mile 2 – 9:54
mile 3 –  9:53
.14 – 8:28

So of course, when I approached the finish line and saw:  30:XX, I was disappointed. (I finished under 30 on a hilly course with a broken foot!!)  The lady pushing triplets in a stroller finished 3 minutes ahead of me as well as lots of young kids.  They even stopped taking photos after 29:37. So depressing!!

DSC00187

officially 30:17

Anyway, my friends were thrilled with my time.  They are not runners (and could not understand why I would even want to be there.) When we checked the finish times, it turned out that I came in FIRST in my age group.

lh5kresults

I was happy but they were not giving out the awards until 6:30 pm. UGH! My friends were hungry and didn’t want to stick around.  I didn’t want to impose so we returned to the car. And guess what?

It didn’t start!! We called AAA again and they were going to take an hour to come.

You can guess the rest.

I went back to the lighthouse to hang out with other racers. (I even met 2 men & their wives who live near me at home.  And they were in my age group. Go figure!)

20140303-120029.jpg

When it was time for awards, I asked if I could get mine first since I had to leave.   They were agreeable and handed me my gold medal.

20140303-121506.jpg

I got back to my friends just as the car was being started and off we went to get a nice dinner.

So all in all, it was an enjoyable day.

I love racing!

I love bling!

Polar Cap 4m Race Report

pc

I ran this race with blogger AJH 3 years ago and it was a tough hilly one but still fun.

Polar Cap - 2nd place in AG

Here we are winning AG awards

Then I ran it again last year.

AJH got 2nd place...we won a lunch bag which matches the race shirt

AG awards again

AJH is running it again and I was looking forward to seeing her.

1506650_10153636242015174_1540176668_n

This year, however, they changed the course. A different start and end..to me it looked hillier, too especially at the end.

1477725_10153637064185174_1866777151_n

All week I have felt that I was coming down with a cold…sneezing, teary eyes, head achey.   Yuck!

Also the weather forecast wasn’t great – snow flurries/snow but warmer (high 20s-30s).  I was hoping that the heavy snow would hold off till later in the day since I had to drive 1 hour to the race.

But when I got up, my cold was gone (must have been allergies) and the weather looked good.  22 degrees…heat wave! And no snow or rain…yet.

I left early for the race in case  it started to snow.

When I got there (at the new location), AJH was already there. (She is hard core – drove all the way form VT with her hubby.)

20140201-171828.jpg

We chatted and hung out inside until the race was about to start.

I felt a little pressure to run fast since I won an AG award in my 2 previous Polar Cap races.  But you never know what will happen when you enter a new age group (AJH enters too.)

2013 – 41:40

I have not been doing any 5ks or any speed work at all. I was prepared for a slower time.

Andrea left me in the dust from the start but it was expected.

The race started going uphill and my legs felt sluggish. Luckily they felt better as the race went on.

I walked after the first mile when there was a steepish hill but then I didn’t walk again till near the end.

I just plodded along admiring the scenery and trying for a consistent pace.

At some point during mile 3, I was running next to a familiar face…a local lady(Sue) in my age group who runs a lot of the same races.  We chatted for a while then she ran ahead. She was ahead of me for quite a bit but I could still see her.

it’s steeper than it looks

Unfortunately, the last half mile of this race is straight uphill!

here comes AJH (photo by her hubby)

I think I walked twice on that hill because I wanted to finish strong.

Sue is the one in green

Believe it or not, I caught Sue, passed her and finished several seconds ahead of her!!! Yay me!

I crossed according to the clock at 40:10.

I was generally happy with the race.  I ran it faster than I thought I would.

happy to be done!

We hung out and ate waiting for the age group awards.

There was soup and fruit and baked goods – I am a sucker for home-made stuff and ate quite a few cookies.

3rd!

We moved up to a new age group and AJH won 3rd which meant that I was 4th… It wasn’t close. I am happy that one of us won and AJH kept up her winning streak.

Splits:

mile 1 – 9:39
mile 2 – 10:14
mile 3 – 10:12
mile 4 –  9:57

Garmin time – 40:03 (I beat both my 2011 & 2013 times.)

After AJH left, I was debating on changing my clothes and leaving or running more.

But the weather was too nice not to run.  It was now in the 30s.  So I decided to run to the Winter Carnival in town.

This was the first day of the event which is held every weekend in February.

I visited with friends who were volunteering.

The outhouse races were beginning but I didn’t stay to watch.

I ran around the lake and through the town and then back to my car.

4 + .97 miles can count for this race too

I covered 4 miles in total – but there was stopping and walking and for the last mile even my foot started hurting.  Still I was glad I hung around and added some miles (in case it rained the next day.)

Next, I drove north  to Bolton Landing.

I had considered going back to the Sagamore to the ice bar but the parking lot was very crowded. (The nice weather must have attracted a lot of people.)

Instead, I parked in town and stopped at Bolton Beans for a latte and something to eat and then I stopped at another store. (I bought a bathing suit for 50% off!)

I would normally stop at the outlets on my way home but I had to get home in time to go to a  Chinese New year’s party (My wallet is relieved!)

Tomorrow there is another free race. I may do the 4 miler or I may just run on my own or I may REST… We’ll see how these old legs feel and what the weather is like.

Happy Running! Did you run or race this weekend?

Running For Meg

1522176_10202506151562532_1992286963_n

I had been planning to do a long run anyway this weekend.  My 2 new running partners proposed Saturday.  They have been running together in preparation of their first half in Philly but I have not run with them since November.

19 - EASY

Adrienne & Heidi on Nov 13, 2013

Then I heard about Meg. Running on the road in the morning and killed by a drunk driver.  It could happen to any of us.

We decided to run 8 miles in her honor and wear blue since that was her favorite color.

At the last minute, Heidi had to cancel but I was still meeting Adrienne at the Corning Bike Path.  On FB, I heard that other runners that I knew were going to be there too.

The forecast was for snow overnight but it never appeared but it was cold (but not as cold as it has been or is going to be.)

When I arrived, it was still cloudy.  I immediately spotted runners. They were finishing their runs.

Then Adrienne arrived.

20140118-113823.jpg

We decided to run together for as long as we could (she is faster than me). The plan was to go out for 4 miles and then head back. Ahead of us were some other runners that I knew (SRMs) who were running faster and fewer miles.  It was great to bump into them.

20140118-113831.jpg

Adrienne & I talked the whole time which made the run bearable. As usual, I was fine starting out but I got very warm when the sun came out.

The path was mostly dry but every now and then there were patches of ice.  I made sure that I was VERY CAREFUL and slowed down looking for snow to run on. I am not used to running without any walking so I was kinda grateful for the ice.

But I did run the whole time with her.  (I even ate my Gu while running.) It was a struggle but I was able to keep up with her until the last 1/2 mile.  My back was starting to hurt and I told her to run ahead.

20140118-113841.jpg

So I am pretty pleased. There’s something to be said about the pressure of keeping up with a running partner. This was about 10 minutes faster than my usual run/walk 8 mile runs.

And the snow never arrived!

What a great way to start off the weekend!!

Happy Running! Did you run any miles for Meg?
