Running, the Heat & My Vacation

As predicted, it was hazy, hot and humid during my four days on Lake George and hotter each day. I love hot weather but this was a little much!

We arrived on Saturday morning and set out for our island spot (Log Bay #3).  Five of our friends arrived on their boat and we spent the day, swimming, eating, drinking and socializing.

At the end of the day, we headed back to sleep at the marina and went to our friends who live in Lake George to play cards.

heading back to Bolton Landing

Sunday morning, I got up and had coffee and breakfast and then headed out for my 4 mile run.  It was hot.  I should have left earlier but this is vacation.  Anyway, it is definitely cooler near the water and it is SO beautiful here.

When I got back, 4 friends had arrived and we headed back to our island site.  Two of our friends arrived also with 8 more people.  What a crowd and so much fun!  I floated on the lake, went on dinghy rides and tried to stay cool.

still staying cool

Again at the end of the day, we headed back to the marina so we could all watch the Bolton Landing fireworks.   Our boating friends headed back to their marinas in Lake George and then drove up to ours.

even the dog enjoyed them

Monday was started exactly like Sunday except it was even hotter.  I got in my 4 mile run. YAY!  This time we only had 10 people on our site.  Our activities were staying cool, of course.

I was glad that I had decided to take an extra day off on Tuesday.  It was very quiet.  Everyone else went back to work.  The heat was incredible so I only ran 3 miles and my hubby was getting impatient at the marina, sitting in the heat.  Today we spent a peaceful day riding around in the boat and reading at the site.

Unfortunately, we finally had to leave and put our boat away.  We ended the day with dinner at our favorite lakeside restaurant.

Happy Running and Stay Cool!

Great Run & Long Weekend Ahead

For the third time this week, I’ve gotten up early to go for a run. Each time, my runs have gotten better so has the weather. I guess there must be a message there.  I love hot weather but I realize it’s not the best for running.

Today, I got up a little late so could only squeeze in 3 miles before going to work. It was sunny and in the low 50s.  I hardly stopped at all and felt like I could run forever!!! Darn job!!!

My next race is not until July 24.  It’s one of my favorites – Silks and Satins 5K.  This race  marks the opening of the Saratoga Race Track.  It’ll my 3rd time running in it. I may even have company running this race!!!

That’s a month between races which is a lot for me.  There’s one on July 11 but the age groups are under 14 and over 14.  That’s doesn’t motivate me.

Anyway, we have a lot of Lake George boating planned: July 3-6, July 16-19 and July 31-Aug 2.

In August and September, I have so many 5k races planned on Saturdays so boating will be limited to Sundays. (Please understand, Hubby!)

Happy Running!

Weather and Running

I was running after work because I could do more miles and didn’t have to rush.

This week, I’ve switched to getting up early and running at 7 am.  I am able to get in 3.5 miles. I even almost make to work on time.

The big difference is the humidity.  On Monday, it was super humid and I had one of my worst runs.  I stopped at least once every 1/4 mile and finished in over 42 minutes.  I never run fast on my own. My 3.5 race time was 33 minutes!  But 42 minutes!?

Today, there was no humidity and I felt GREAT during my run.  I finished in 37 minutes!! Five minutes faster than Monday with only a few walking breaks.

If you look at the weekend forecast, the cool dry weather is ending….but I will be on vacation Sat-Tues and hope to complete my runs by jumping into Lake George. 🙂

Happy Running!

Topic: Give-A-Ways- Love Em or Hate Em

Question: What are your thoughts on give-a-ways?  Do you enter them often?  What entices you to enter or turns you off from entering?  Have you run your own give-a-ways?

I love them.

I enter only those that offer items that I’d like to win. I always post the giveaways on my blog and on twitter (if required) but I do not post on Facebook – there are enough items that appear on people’s  Facebook news items & I don’t want to add to it.

Giveaways have given me opportunities to learn about new running products and they have introduced me to bloggers that I wouldn’t otherwise found.

I have been lucky to win some cool things.   I have never run my own giveaway.  I don’t think I have enough readers and a vendor hasn’t offered me anything to review and give away (Hint! Hint!)

Sunday Funday

I’ve recuperated from my Saturday race and parties.

Today was my day to skip running and spent time with my hubby & my mentee.  I was fortunate to be able to do both at the same time.  We spent the day on our boat on Lake George and it didn’t rain until we were putting it away. YAY!!

On second thought, running after a 3 year old should count as running. I am exhausted!

Running & Boating

Yes, this past weekend I made it work.

After work on Friday, I stopped off at the grocery store & shopped for the weekend, came home & planted some flowers, cleaned & set up for Mah Jongg at my house, packed for the weekend & managed to squeeze in a 2.5 mile run!!!!!!!! (I would have run more but my guests were due to arrive.)

Saturday, we left early for Bolton Landing to get our boat and head out to the island. (My hubby had driven up to reserve a day site for 3 days on Friday & came home to go to work.)  We spent a beautiful day on our site with friends & friends of friends.  The guys even went cliff jumping.  The water was too cold for me.

Saturday night, we went back to the marina to sleep. First,  we went to Lake George Village to see the fireworks and to our friend’s who live there to play dominoes.  During the night, it rained but stopped by morning.

Though I didn’t sleep well or enough, I was excited to get into Bolton Landing to get coffee & breakfast and then head out on a run.

I wish I had gotten an earlier start because it was hot & very humid.  My husband, thank God, was very content to watch friends play tennis, chat with other boaters & wait till I was done.

I ran my usual through town and around the Sagamore resort.  I decided to run back the other direction and stumbled upon a beach and a turtle pond. My run turned out to be 4.5 miles!!! (This was the best part of the weekend – don’t tell my hubby!!)

When I got back since my hubby was still chatting, I took for camera out & retraced my steps.

The rest of the day was very relaxing.  We hung out on the island and I read.  We rode around on the boat for awhile before we put sadly  it away.

On My Way to the Lake

A quick post as I am leaving and hope to have a hot, sunny weekend on Lake George which means a Happy Father’s Day for my Hubby and some running for me.

Back on Sunday eve.

Happy Running!

No Races This Weekend

The last two weekends, it has rained and my hubby and I have not gone on our boat on Lake George.  This morning, while watching the weather channel, he announces: “No races this weekend!! We ‘re going on the boat and we’re leaving early Saturday!”

I have run a 5K the past two weekends and I have one next Saturday so I can’t complain.  But I think I am already going through withdrawal at the thought of not running in a race this weekend. Why?

  1. Races motivate me to run during the week. I ran Monday but because I don’t have  a race this weekend, I skipped my run yesterday and today!!!
  2. I run faster in a race.  I mean a lot faster… 3 miles at home takes me 35 minutes or more and last week I ran it in 28 in a race.

No more whining…I will run tomorrow after work and maybe even Friday.  I will run around the Sagamore in Bolton Landing on Sunday while boating on Lake George!!! I will enjoy our times on Lake George…I have a lot more races planned for the rest of the summer (Hope the hubby will understand.)

Happy Running!

Topic: Summer Fun and Training

Question: With the warmer weather brings BBQ’s, vacations and summer holiday fun…how do you manage a balance between training and fun?

This is a tough one. I try to run as many 5k races as possible during the summer.  This also means that I need to train during the week.

We have a boat on Lake George and my husband likes to go there as often as the weather allows.  Sometimes, we sleep on the boat and reserve a dock on an island for several days. This means that my understanding husband has to dock the boat in Bolton Landing each morning so I can run around town.  So far he hasn’t complained.  It also means that if I have a race on Saturday, he has to wait to go up to the lake or we take 2 cars & I meet him there.

I also play mah jongg on Friday nites and if I have a race, I have to leave early and also not drink a lot.

I would be having a lot more fun with my friends and family if I didn’t run. But running is important to me so I make the sacrifices.

Recap of  last week:

Rain Abbreviated Vacation

 I’m Back!

The forecast for last night was thundershowers and rain for today so we stayed on the island till 8 pm last night and then brought our boat back to Bolton Landing Marina and headed home a day early.

the view from our site (Red Rock Bay #18)

We had PERFECT weather for three days. We spent each day on the island barbecuing, drinking, swimming, fishing, relaxing and enjoying the company of our old and new friends (who visited each day).

Although the site and weather was perfect, we spent the night on our boat at Bolton Landing Marina.  That way, I could run.  YAY! I ran 3.5 miles both Sunday & Monday mornings in Bolton Landing and around the Sagamore Hotel.

(Slideshow from last summer of my running views: http://www.magtoo.com/tour.do?method=viewMagShow&id=1253496762218)

Plans for today include laundry, laundry …and movies tonight and then back to work tomorrow!
