Changes in Perspective

If you’ve read my blog at all, you know that I HATE running on the TREADMILL.  I find it boring…I run so slow on it … and can’t do it for very long.  In fact, I only have run on it if it has been raining. (Yeah I’m a wimp about that!)

This winter has been a dream come true as far as snow, ice and cold weather.  I would not have used the treadmill at all …IF I WERE RUNNING!

This injury has changed my perspective!!

My PT guy R told me yesterday that tomorrow he may put me on the treadmill!! Granted, I will be walking and holding on and it will be very slow but I am psyched!!!

He is trying to help me walk…put weight on my left foot…stride…limp less!  Sounds good to me…even if it is the treadmill.

So I will be loving the treadmill because eventually after walking on it, I will be running on the treadmill!!

Happy Running! Do you use a treadmill?

Thanks Steve Jobs

My first computer use was on a Mac.  I used Macs for many years.  Unfortunately,  finances forced me to buy a PC when I needed a laptop for grad school.  A career switch from teaching to IT also changed my computer use from a MAC to a PC, as well.

However, for running, I am eternally grateful to Steve Jobs.

my iPod Touch

The iPod Touch has made running on the treadmill possible.  I download my favorites shows such as The Good Wife and Fairly Legal and watch them while I run to keep me sane on the treadmill.

my iPod nano

When I first started running, I bought this nano off my friend’s daughter and used it with the Nike+ chip on my shoe to tracks my miles as well as listen to music.  I used it for several years and right up to my first half marathon in January 2011 (when I bought a Garmin) to keep track of distance and pace.

my iPod shuffle

Now that I use a Garmin to keep track of mileage and pace, I use this shuffle to listen to music when I run outdoors.  I won it in a blog giveaway and I love it because of its size.  It clips onto my shorts or fits into a key pocket.

the phone in my future

No, I don’t have a iPhone (yet).  I bought a new phone last December before I found out that Verizon would be offering an iphone.  So now I have to wait…. The iPhone would be perfect for running since I like to take photos when I run.  If I carry a camera, then I don’t have room to carry a phone.  If I carry a phone, then I don’t have room to carry a camera.  The  iPhone would allow to me to have both options in one device!! (Actually it could even replace my iPod touch & shuffle if I store videos & music on it.)

on my wish list

I don’t have a personal laptop.  I have one for work (which occasionally I bring home.) It is heavy so a iPad would be great to have to surf the Internet and update my blog and facebook posts when I am away from my desk.  It also would be even better for watching TV while on the treadmill.  Will I see an Ipad2 under my Christmas tree??

Happy Running!  Do you use  an ipod or iphone when you run?

My Trip to Milwaukee and More

my 1st beer, the 1st nite

at the conference dinner with my colleague

dinner on the river with new friends

I had originally hoped to run the Superun 5k on the night I arrived.  I didn’t register and I’m glad I didn’t because my flight was delayed in Cleveland and I arrived too late.  Anyway, I am nursing a sore “heel.”

Thursday morning I dragged myself to the hotel gym (which was on my floor) and slowly ran 3 miles on the treadmill while watching Wimbledon live.

I love conferences and now I remember why I didn’t run at all 2 years ago in Boulder.  No time!  You get caught up in the excitement of the workshops & meeting new people.

The bad thing or maybe good thing (if you like food) is that you get to eat every hour! Breakfast, workshop, food break, workshop, lunch, workshop, food break, workshop, food break, workshop, dinner!

We did walk every day after lunch and in the evening.  But it didn’t put a dent in the calories that I consumed!!!

Friday morning I had a headache & Saturday morning, I had to pack.  So I had a great time but didn’t do the running that I had planned.  It wasn’t so bad because I could justify it with the fact that my “heel” hurt, right?

Sunday morning we got up bright and early to go to Lake George.  I was psyched because I had Monday off.

The real reason I had Monday off was that I had wanted to do the Adirondack 10 miler with AJH.  I definitely wasn’t prepared to run 10 miles and I was jet lagged and tired from the conference.

We got to our marina where the race ended just in time to hear the awards.  Believe it or not, they gave awards for each age and there was no one in my age group!!! I would have won!!! DARN!! This race is on my bucket list!

We ended up having a great day on one of the picnic islands (Black Mountain Pt) with friends.

Saturday evening, we hung out in Bolton Landing and had pizza and listened to a live band.

Sunday morning, sore foot or not, I wasn’t going to miss a run on a perfect morning.  I did my usual 5 mile trek down to the park, around the Sagamore and down 9N.  I took it slow & walked when my heel hurt but it doesn’t feel any worse so it was worth it!

Sagamore nature trail

Afterwards, we rode around on the boat to another island and then met friends back at the marina for a BQ.

a pic before leaving for tennis

Unfortunately we had to leave early because I had a USTA tennis match. (I had to play singles – UGH!!)

This is the last week before I need to get serious about running!  Please, heel heal!

Happy Running!

Traveling for Work and Running

I haven’t been running long enough to figure this out.  I think I got the vacation and running thing figured out.  But work is different.

It’s not flexible.  You can’t control the time that you have to work and the time that you can run.

You can’t control the place.  Does the hotel have a gym?  Is there a place to run outdoors or is it dangerous to run in the streets downtown.

The last time I went on a work conference was 2 years ago.  I looked back on my blog and read that I didn’t run AT ALL!!  I was in Boulder, CO and I remember it being so scenic but then again 2 years I was a different runner.  I would skip my runs and then run a 5K anyway.

So today I am leaving  for Milwaukee.

I mentioned that there is a 5k at 7 pm tonight.  It looks doubtful because I don’t arrive early enough and it is not close to the hotel.  And then there is my heel problem!  And the weather doesn’t look promising either:

Conference schedule:

Wed  3-7 pm (pizza & drinks)

Thurs

  • 8- 9 am – breakfast (get up early & use treadmill?)
  • 9-11:30 am – sessions
  • 11:30 -1 – lunch (bring sneakers to go for a walk?)
  • 1-5 pm – sessions
  • 5-8 pm – dinner (bring sneakers to go for a walk)

Fri

  • 8- 9 am – breakfast (get up early & use treadmill?)
  • 9-11:30 am – sessions
  • 11:30 -1 – lunch (bring sneakers to go for a walk?)
  • 1-5 pm – sessions
  • after 5pm – dinner on one’s own or baseball game or beer tour (treadmill or run????)

Sat

  • 8-9 am – breakfast (get up early & use treadmill?)
  • 9-10 am – session
  • leave to catch my flight home

Well, if I don’t run at all, maybe the time off will heal my heel!

Happy Running!

Diva Night

Last night, Fleet Feet held its 4th annual Diva Night. I think I went to the lst one and wanted to reconnect with some running friends so I went this year, too.  I also feel a sense allegiance to the store because they gave me my start to running with the No Boundaries program.

I had a hair appt so I arrived an hour late. I had signed up on Facebook instead of rsvping via email so I wasn’t sure they’d let me in.  (A lot of people were turned away!!)

Well, I was on the list.  Phew!

They had champagne and healthy food – cheese, crackers & fruit.  Everyone who came got a Brooks makeup bag when they arrived and a bouquet of fresh flowers when they left.

I immediately bumped into Felice & Suzy, 2 local bloggers & runners.  I haven’t seen them in person since the running group ended its runs.  We had all done a half marathon since then & chatted about our experiences and future running plans.

Felice & I are chatting, Suzy is looking at the camera

I met my new “Fan” Liz in person.  She is excited about running her 1st race – the Freihofer’s in less than one month!

Throughout the evening, the called names of those who rsvped and you spun the wheel to win a prize.  I won 2 containers of Nuun.  (I’m a Gu fan so I’m a little skeptical about drinks. Anyone use Nuun???)

Felice wins a Brooks Shirt

I felt a little bad that they were so strict about rsvping because many who said they were coming and didn’t.  Several of my friends wanted to come and when they called, FleetFeet said it was full.

As far as running goes this week, I ran 3 miles after work and before tennis and the rain (without my garmin 😦 ) on Monday, 3.5 miles  and an episode of “Off the Map”on the treadmill at work (because it was raining) on Wed and this morning, I took my 1st pre-work run (3.5 miles) since we turned the clocks ahead. I have had a hard time getting out of bed & have been running after work.

This run felt GREAT – it was in the 30’s so a little chilly at first but the sun warmed me up.  I need to get back in the habit of running early as the temps rise.

Next race is Sunday, a 5K!! I’m looking forward to it!!!!!!! It’s supposed to be dry… YAY!

Happy Running! TGIF!! 3 days until my B-day!

Two for Tuesday

  1.  I won another giveaway – some GU – YAY!  I really like the Gels (esp Vanilla).  I always take them during my long runs. I even took one before my 5k on Sunday.
  2. Does this weather look familiar?  I see treadmill in my future!!!!!!!! And yes, rain is predicted for Sunday – my next 5k!

Happy Running! Enough of the showers…bring on the May flowers!

My First Marathon

small_Cupcake-Marathon.png

Gotcha!

It’s Virtual and I have from March 14-March 26, 2011 to run 26.2 miles. I think I can do that….

After 3 days off (but 3 days of playing tennis), I ran today.  The Daylight Savings Time is killing me because when I have after work commitments, it is too dark in the morning to  run outside.  Today it was raining, too.

So off to the gym to run 3 miles on the treadmill (23.2 to go).  The Good Wife is on hiatus so my new favorite show is Fairly Legal.

Happy Running!

Snow Day (Again)

The only thing good about snow days if that I can sleep in and then go to the gym later.  That is what I did yesterday on my surprise snow day.

My hubby drove me, waited while I ran 4 miles on the treadmill and then we went out to breakfast.

Eventually the sun came out and started melting things but left the ice hanging from all the trees.

This morning I had planned to run a quick 3 miles on the slushy roads before work but I couldn’t get out of bed!!!! Tennis tonite…tomorrow I am gonna run!!!!!

Still hoping for an early spring!!

Happy Running!

I don’t know how he gets up there.  I know my hubby secretly lets him in the bedroom or bathroom window (as well as one other cat).  I am trying to train him to get down by himself.  And he did! Who knows how?? ( I have 5 cats but only 2 climb on the roof when they want to come in.)

This morning was also another treadmill day – 3 miles and one episode of  “The Good Wife.”

Tonight is Mah Jongg nite!! I won 4 times last time and I’m still resting on my laurels!

Happy Running!
