3 Things Thursday

  1. I’m going to see the movie The Social Network tonite.  I’m pretty excited …being I’m so into Facebook & blogging.
  2. It has been raining all week.  I have been forced to do the treadmill thing –  4 miles on Monday & 4 on Wed. I hate it but I better get used to it since it is getting too cold & dark to run before or after work.  (At the moment, it is nice out but I gotta get going to meet my friend…)
  3. Next 5K race is Saturday…it’s a small one…only 100 runners.  It’s at UAlbany where I went to college.  It’s part of Homecoming/Reunion weekend. Goals unknown…don’t know the course or the weather… I will just try to have fun!!! (Who am I kidding?  A PR would be nice!)

Happy Running!

Rain Rain Go Away

I know this is an old wives tale, but it works for me.

It’s been raining for 2 days. I do not RUN IN THE RAIN!!

Luckily I did run Tues evening.  It was an awful run…too humid, too tired, too hungry. After 2 miles I could barely move but managed to run/walk 2 more miles.

I ran again Wed evening and felt so much better.  I did 3 miles.

Now I keep my fingers crossed that the rain will stop.  Tomorrow is the Susan G. Komen Race for Cure. I am running on a team with students & staff  at the law school where I work.  I think there are 19 of us.  We have a team tee shirt – moisture wicking one too!!

I will be running for: Judy, Mary Ann, Maria, Ava, Sally, Phyllis –my friends who have survived breast cancer  and for Dottie who did not!

What is my goal for this race?

It’s going to be very crowded – probably at least 3,000 racers. It starts up hill and it’s slow going until the park.  So, it’s not a race for a PR.

My 2008 time was 32:49, my 2009 time was 31:15.  Those were both gun times not chip times.  My chip time this year for the Freihofers (same course) was 30:39. My goal, I guess, is under 30:39!

Happy Running! Have a nice weekend and good luck to all those racing!

Partying & Running

Yes, they can both happen in the same weekend.

Boats by George, where we bought our boat, has an annual Customer Appreciation Party at the Lake George Club.  It was held Sat eve.  Two years ago, I went home after the party in order to run in a 5K the next Sunday.  This year, I decided to enjoy the event and not race. And I did…

We went home on Sunday.  I hadn’t run since Wed. and I forced myself to do a long run.  That’s 5 miles for me.  The weather was cloudy and cool.  In fact, it started to rain halfway but stopped.  I wore my new Mizunos and I love them.  I focused on my breathing which took my mind off the fact that I was starved.  I ran most of it (walked intermittently) but felt good.

The weather is getting cooler – dark in the mornings, darker earlier at the end of each day…I may have to head to the treadmill, oh no!!

Happy Running!

Three Things Thursday

  1. My morning run got rained out.  I was kinda glad.  I played tennis Tues. after work, Wed. before work and Wed after work, so with this heat and humidity, I was POOPED.
  2. I have another 5k race this Sat.  The Fasig-Tipton in Saratoga.  It’s the same starting point as my last race but a different course.  Last year, it was my PR race! My friend, Mary, was supposed to be in LA but she’s not and will be running with me 🙂 However, I have been playing tennis not running.  I’m debating whether I should run tomorrow or just be very rested???
  3. I’m still debating the 10k option.  I want to do it but tennis is very important now that we’re going on to Sectionals Aug 20-22. So if we lose, I’m going to try training for the Oct 23 10k.  And if we win, we go to Arizona Oct 15-17 and I’ll keeping doing 5ks til next year….

Happy Running!

Tennis Victory but a Rained Out AM Run

My team (Aces Wild) won 4-1
so we advance to next round and play again next Monday. YAY!

My doubles partner & I won too. Not easily…my partner was very nervous and playing very poorly!!! We were down 1-5 in the lst set and about to lose. It was my job to boost her confidence & get her to relax. I told her to just think about making ONE POINT not winning the match. We joked around each time we made one point. Eventually, one by one we won the next 6 games or 24 points! In the 2nd set, we were playing much better. We were up 5-2 & I was serving for the match. My head took over and I started to think about winning and guess what, they won the next 3 games and we were tied at 5-5. They were now the confident ones and we had to return to our original plan – just win points. So we won the next 8 points and it was over. The other team cried. We were incredulous. We couldn’t believe that being so close to defeat that we won!!!!!!

Tennis is sometimes in addition to skill such a “mind game.”

Back to running. I was mentally and physically drained after my match last night so I didn’t sleep well. I set my alarm to get up and run. IT WAS RAINING!!! Reprieve…we’ll see if I have time to get a run when I get home and before I go see:

and

John McEnroe’s team is playing the NYBuzz (Martinis Hingis plays for our team) tonight in Albany.

Happy Running!

Tuesday & Cancellations

  1. Monday tennis match – cancelled – opponent couldn’t play.  I won by default 6-0, 6-0
  2. Tuesday tennis – cancelled – rain. We went out to dinner instead.
  3. Thursday – Census job – cancelled – not enough work. I willl get together with a friend.

Now about running:

I could have run Monday after work but it was hot & I was tired from the weekend.  So I got up early today and ran 3.5 miles.  It is so nice to start off the day with a run. The weather was perfect. I plan to do the same on Thursday unless it rains then I’ll run after work.  My next 5k race is SaturdayValley Cats Homerun 5k.

Happy Running!

Kinderhook Bank OK 5K & an Unexpected PR

Read about the race here and here.

This race turned out much differently than expected.

I was really tired all week and had a tight right calf muscle.  Yesterday I came home from work and went to bed.  I was too tired to go to Mah Jongg (which I LOVE) or even BLOG.

When I got up this morning, I was still tired.  My race goals were to finish and run as much of the race as I could.

This was the first time I have run this race and it was about 40 minutes away.  On the way, I realized that at the last 4 races I have run with others that I know.  It was nice having someone to chat with before and after the race. I knew no one running this race & I signed up for it while on a high from my last race. This is bound to happen when you are a 5K race addict like myself.

The skies were overcast and threatening RAIN!.  The temperature was in the 60’s and would have been comfortable if it weren’t so HUMID.   They gave out a nice backpack type bag, coupon for a free Stewarts ice cream cone and the standard cotton tee.

There were almost 600 running in this race.  I recognized a lot of elite runners from the area (so no award for me!). It started and ended in the middle of town.  There were some inclines on the country roads of Kinderhook, NY but otherwise  it was relatively flat.

I started slowly in the middle of the pack, trying to get my iPod to play.  I never have an idea what my pace is since I don’t have a Garmin.  Everyone was passing me by so I thought I was running slow.  I just kept running.

I was surprised that the mile 1 clock said 9:20.  That’s my PR pace.  So I continued running.  The 2nd mile clock said 18:42 so I was at the same pace.  That was good because I didn’t want a repeat of last week’s race when I ran too fast during mile 2 and had no gas for the 3rd mile.

I continued running at my same pace with only a brief stop for water and when I approached the finish line, I was shocked to see 28 minutes!  I started to sprint  as fast as I could!!!

My goal this year was to finish under 29 minutes and I did- 28:42.  YAY!!

I actually felt less tired after the race than before.

There were had lots of refreshments – apples, bananas, oranges, watermelon, cider, bagels, donuts, bars, etc.  They gave out ceramic dishes to the top 3 in each 5 year age group.  Just as they started to announce the winners, it started to rain.  I hung around since I had a rain coat and I knew I had no chance at 10 year age groups but there was a slight possibility today.

Nope!  I came in 318 and 6th in my age group.  The top 2 in my age group ran it in 20 & 21 minutes!!!!!!!!!  The good news is next year, these 2 runners  will be out of my age group for 2 years.

I hope the rain stops for some outdoor activities tomorrow.

Happy Running and have a great weekend!

Three Things Thursday

  1. It rained yesterday (I needed the rest anyway) and it rained on and off all day today.  But when I got home, it had stopped I got in a 3.5 mile snail run.
  2. I am over the 250 mile mark (I have 255) and it’s only June.  Last year I ran 209 miles in 12 months.  This year my goal is 300 – maybe I’ll get to 500?
  3. I love 3 day weekends and I am taking another this weekend. I hope the weather is Ok. Another  5K Race Saturday…

Happy Running!

Rain Abbreviated Vacation

 I’m Back!

The forecast for last night was thundershowers and rain for today so we stayed on the island till 8 pm last night and then brought our boat back to Bolton Landing Marina and headed home a day early.

the view from our site (Red Rock Bay #18)

We had PERFECT weather for three days. We spent each day on the island barbecuing, drinking, swimming, fishing, relaxing and enjoying the company of our old and new friends (who visited each day).

Although the site and weather was perfect, we spent the night on our boat at Bolton Landing Marina.  That way, I could run.  YAY! I ran 3.5 miles both Sunday & Monday mornings in Bolton Landing and around the Sagamore Hotel.

(Slideshow from last summer of my running views: http://www.magtoo.com/tour.do?method=viewMagShow&id=1253496762218)

Plans for today include laundry, laundry …and movies tonight and then back to work tomorrow!

Happy Running!
