Summer’s Here

summer
Yup, it is finally summer in the NE! And the temperatures are following suit:

summer

the 7 day forecast for Albany, NY

As you know, I LOVE summer! I prefer heat to cold… (but not so much when I am unable to do anything fun 😦 )

after my lst run in 5 months

sweating last summer

I wish I could sweat off all the calories that I am consuming, go for an early morning run or an evening bike ride….or jump off the boat to cool offf… wah wah wah!

Basin Bay - enjoying the shallow water

yes, that will be me soon but not just yet

The only thing could think of doing today was getting rid of the running shoe:

Vitamin D Needed

With 2 broken bones in my ankle and a stress fracture within 9 months, I questioned my doctor about why this happened?  He first asked: “Have you had a bone scan?”   I replied that I had and it was normal.  Then he said: “No one in the Northeast gets enough Vitamin D.”

Since then I have started taking a Calcium with Vitamin D supplement every morning.

However, sunshine is my preferred source of Vitamin D.

Blue Tree resort in Orlando Fla.

A tennis friend won 8 days at this Orlando resort in December (Dec 8-15) and invited 3 of us to go.  Unfortunately,  it is during exam week at the law school.  But I am going to try to go for 4 days (if my boss oks it.)

Last year our best boating friends moved to Daytona Beach. My hubby & I may visit them for a few days in January (around Martin Luther King Day).

Last summer one of my close tennis friends moved to Sarasota.  I also have 2 mah jongg friends that vacation there in the winter.  I am definitely going March 12-18.  And if things work out I will run a half marathon there on March 17!!

Naples Fla

For the 8th spring, 10 of us are spending a week playing tennis in Naples.  The projected dates this year are: May 15-22.

So there you have it … my plans for an increased source of Vitamin D until boating season starts in June.

Happy Running!  Do you worry about getting enough Vitamin D?

Impromptu 10K

My favorite quote of the moment:

The most powerful time to persist is when you don’t feel like it.  Keep going, and the persistence itself will make you feel better.” – Ralph Marston.

So I had been feeling guilty about not running Tuesday or Wednesday am but it was 93 degrees when I left work on Wednesday.

I put on my running clothes and went to the Corning Bike Trail.  I wanted to run 3 miles at least.  I decided to run 3 miles out because the farther you run, the shadier it gets and then walk back.

I ran 3.1 miles slowly in 35 minutes and then turned around and headed back.  Then I saw a very old lady running VERY VERY slowly but running (without walking). I felt guilty walking so I started to run and passed her. Then I walked and she passed me.  We played leap-frog for a while until I tired and walked more (and she turned and headed back to where she started her run – the opposite direction as me).  I was impressed with how slow she was running.  I can’t run that slow and how she kept that consistent pace (even in the heat).

I ended up finishing my 2nd 5k in 41 minutes. Total time for the 10K was 1 hour 16 min.

Last year, I would have been discouraged in finishing in over ONE hour.  Last week, I would only have attempted 3 miles.

But now, I realize that I can push myself through the pain. And yes, I did feel better afterwards.

Will I run the 10K on Saturday?

Yes (unless it is raining/thunderstorms)!

13.1 miles in the pouring rain…never again!

Happy Running!

3rd Annual Sweat Your Thorns Off 5k

Every loves a race…and a free one is even better.

I sweat yesterday morning running 3.5 miles (and I mean sweat). So I wasn’t going to run today but I decided to stop off on my favorite bike trail on the way up to Lake George.

The original plan was to run long.  For me, long means 4-5 miles.

Those plans got derailed when I had to work yesterday.  My hubby went up to the lake and I was left to pack everything.  I also got home late from playing Mah Jongg.

So by the time I got up, packed and got to the bike trail, it was almost 10 am. (And I promised my hubby that I would be at the marina around 11:30 am.)

It was also almost 90 degrees with 90% humdity!  Yikes!!

Well, at least the trail was shady.  I felt really energetic for the first time in a long time!  (Darn it…if only my boating friends weren’t impatiently waiting for me…).

The run was a nice one inspite of the heat. I’m no Usain Bolt but finished my virtual 5K race at 33:48!  A respectable post ankle injury finish time.

I then drove up to the lake in record time!

Relief!

Thanks to the Boring Runner for motivating me to  “Sweat my thorns off)!!

Happy Running!

TTT: Heat, Tennis & Running

1.  It has been HOT in the Northeast. 90’s!! It has also been HUMID in addition to being hot. I have been feeding my friend’s cat before work while she has been on vacation. So I am been doing my activities outside AFTER work. (Not smart, I know.)

my friend’s car on Tuesday

2.  On Tuesday, I played tennis for the 2nd time.  Doubles again and I felt a lot more comfortable. (with my tennis not the weather)  I even won with 3 different partners.  Afterwards. we all went to one player’s house to go swimming in her pool.  YAY!

pavillion where we started

3. Yesterday I ran the 2nd Run with Mizuno sponsored by FleetFeet. It was held this time in Central Park in Schenectady.  Again, a very small group of runners – ALL FAST!!  I tried similar Mizunos as last week but in a different color.

Again, they felt pretty comfy.

We ran the Cardiac Classic / Run 4 Your Life 5K Course which I had done in 2011 and 2009.  I ran alone and was way behind all the other runners. My pace is still VERY SLOW but I ran the whole time (but it was a struggle!)  I had no idea where I was going and wound up missing .5 miles of it. (I added another .5 mile afterwards to make it 3 miles for the run.)

This park is a beautiful place to run

I love these runs because it forces me to run in a new location and run faster. My time was a 33:xx rather than 29:xx in 2011.  I am not going to beat myself up about it.  (My ankle was not happy last night…so I have to be PATIENT.)

Today the humidity and temps are down finally.

Happy Running! How are you dealing with the heat?

A Good Run and a Good Weekend

I ran  3 miles after work on Thursday and it was pathetic.  I had to stop and walk almost every tenth of a mile. I’m not exaggerating. Yes, it was hot and humid & I was tired but that’s no excuse.

I took Friday off and went up to the lake.

Saturday morning, I went for a 4 mile run.  It was VERY hot and humid (I didn’t get up as early as I should have).  I went south on 9N in Bolton Landing which has rolling hills and cut through the cemetery and then ran back to the marina.

through the cemetery

It was not a particularly fast run.  But I ran at a consistent pace and had negative splits.  There were very few walk breaks and I felt redeemed.

Not sure the reason for this good run …it was in the morning…after a day off…pretty scenery??

So although I want to run almost everyday.  My ankle says “You need to rest it.”

Today I rested it again.

Otherwise the weekend was like every weekend on the lake…relaxing and fun.

Running plans for the week:

Monday – run before work
Tuesday – Tennis
Wednesday – run after work
Thursday – run after work
Friday – REST
Saturday – 5K race

(This is similar to last week so I hope I have a good run on Sat.)

Happy Running! How was your weekend?

New Shoes, Boating & Running

Thanks to the SRMs for the gift card.  They sent it to me when I was first injured and I saved it until I needed it.  I have lots of running shoes but psychologically I needed a new pair.  So I went to FleetFeet and tried on all brands. They all felt good but none were pink so I choose these funky turquoise ones (Mizuno Wave Inspire 8s).

Then I was off to spend FIVE days on Lake George.  We sleep on our boat at the marina each night.  During the day, we hang out on our boat or on the islands with different groups of old friends and new friends. Sometimes we barbecue on the island, other times, we eat on the boat and also we eat in restaurants and cookout at the marina.  So far this summer, the weather has been almost PERFECT.

Here are some highlights:

I am still struggling with my running.  But I am trying to be patient and not get depressed.  I didn’t have time to run on July 4th but I did run/walk 4 hilly miles on Thursday.  SLOW!!! My big toe felt strange in my new shoes (after running.)  Not sure with all my foot issues, I can blame the shoes.

Thursday night, I decided to go home so I could (believe it or not) run at my leisure (my hubby is always impatiently waiting to go out on the boat)  and on a flat shady trail. I chose the Colonie Town Park bike trail and it was so much better!! Even my foot felt better.

I got dressed to run on Saturday but it started to rain so I changed my clothes and then the rain stopped.

Sunday, we left early to get a picnic site and then we went back to the marina so I could run.  I only got in 3 miles since it was getting late and HOT.

Today, I had planned to run but woke up exhausted and  with a headache.  Maybe later….

Happy Running!  Congrats to all the Boilermaker racers!  That’s on my bucket list too!

Back to Boating and Biking

the marina – our boat in the center left

Saturday was a PERFECT day weatherwise and my first day on Lake George in our boat.  It was great seeing all those familiar faces (I had to repeat my broken ankle story many times.)  We spent the whole day on the lake and then went out to dinner in Bolton Landing with friends. We even stopped for a root beer float on the way home.  Summer fun has begun!

The weather on Sunday was even better.  Unfortunately, I had to go to a bridal shower so we couldn’t go to Lake George.

I started off the day with a bike ride on the Corning Trail.

It was great but I had to rush home to get ready for the shower.

The best part of the shower was seeing my tennis friends again.

It was very warm!! But I have been eating a lot lately…I mean a lot.  So I decided on bike ride #2 in the evening.

This time I went to the Nisky Trail to ride on the Mohawk River.

Old photo – now there is a lot of green

I really enjoyed the peace and quiet of biking alone. (Not as much as running but that will come….).

Today is my hubby’s birthday!  We will celebrate at the lake next weekend.

Tonight I go out to dinner AGAIN…with a bunch of women I used to play tennis with on Mondays.

Happy Running!  Did you enjoy your weekend?

Wordless Wednesday – Spring (or is it Summer) has sprung

It only rained the first evening so we hung out at the marina. The other 2 days, it was sunny & warm.  I got my two morning runs in – 6 miles & 3.5 miles. Still not used to the heat & humdity.  I’m not complaining.  The scenery is breathtaking.

Happy Running!
