Wednesday Word: Being an Optimistic Runner

Deb Runs

Every Wednesday, the Deb from Deb Runs will be providing a word about which to blog. Kind of like a nice little blog prompt. Posts can be fitness or health related, but don’t have to be, so really anyone can play along. Just be sure to link up with InLinkz on Deb’s main post, and share the love by reading and commenting on other’s participant’s posts.

This week’s Word is Optimism.

Optimism is defined as “hopefulness and confidence about the future or the successful outcome of something” or this definition which I like better:

For the most part, I think runners are optimists.  We wouldn’t be out there day after day if we weren’t.

As runners, how can we be more optimistic?

  • Take risks.

Run in a place where you’ve never run before.  Don’t use excuses such as “I may get lost,” “I’m not good on hills, “It’s too far,” “Trails are too hard,”I’m too slow to run with them,” “Tracks are boring,”etc.  Take a chance. This new place could become your new favorite route. An optimistic runner will seize new opportunities with an open mind.

  • Don’t be afraid to fail.

Sign up for a new distance.  Join a running group. Try a new race.  You never know how you’ll do until you try.  Running is hard.  So yes, you may fail.  An optimistic runner will try and expect to cross that finish line.

  • Focus on the positive in a run or race.

Runners will have bad runs. There will be awful races. We will get injured. But an optimistic runner will see value in each running experience and is able find something positive:

-I ran my fastest mile
-I didn’t get injured
-I crossed the finish line
-It was faster than my last race
-I had negative splits
-I ran at an even pace
-I ran up the hills
-I did it inspite of….
-I had fun
-I made a new friend
-Great bling.
-Pretty course

  • Make new goals.

Don’t give up if you don’t succeed. You’re not too slow.Maybe the course was hard.  Maybe the weather was the culprit. If you didn’t meet your goal, just sign up for another race. Keep trying.

Am I an optimistic runner?

Sometimes I am not.  I whine about how I wish I could run faster.  I complain that I didn’t have the race time that I wanted. I sulk when my training runs suck. I don’t like to run when it’s too cold, too hot, too humid, too windy, etc.  I hate the treadmill. Blah blah blah.

So this post is therapeutic.

I have a half marathon in 11 days!!

I am going to be an optimist:

  • I will have fun.
  • I will enjoy the beautiful course.
  • I will cross the finish line with smile.
  • I will give it my best shot.
  • If it is not up to my expectations, I will still look at its positive outcomes.
  • I will continue running half marathons as long as I can.

this race is going to be a blast!!

Happy Running! Are you an optimist?

Wednesday Word – Qualities of a Runner

This week’s Word is Quality

or according the dictionary “a distinctive characteristic possessed by someone.”

Well, for runners, there are several important ones:

  • Confidence.

We runners may not have started out confident.  And we may not be confident all the time. But if we didn’t have the confidence to start running, then we never would have.  With each step, we become more confident.  We enter 5ks and then 10ks. Eventually we may become confident enough to run a half marathon.  Some of us even attempt marathons and ultras.  When we lose our confidence is when we have problems.  (90% of running is mental so they say.)

  • Sense of humor.

This means rolling with the punches and not sweating the small stuff. Let’s face it, sometimes running sucks. Sometimes it’s cold or too hot or raining. Sometimes we forget to pack our socks. Sometimes we are off pace. Sometimes we have intestinal issues or chafing. A sense of humor comes in handy in all these situations! There is always tomorrow, and after all, not every run is going to be a good one.  Knowing that things happen that are out of our control, helps us to stay focused, laugh it off, and move on.

  • Commitment.

In running, you must be committed. You get out of running what you put into running. In theory, if you do those drills and weekly training runs, you will get stronger and/or faster.

  • Consistency.

Consistency is key to any workout routine. If you want to be a better runner, you need to establish a routine and avoid deviating too much from it.  We all know what happens when we skip runs and let our training slide … poor results or even worse, an injury.

  • Flexibility.

Runners need to go with the flow, and often. Maybe you were looking to do your long run on Saturday and now realize you can’t. It may be the weather or work or family obligations. Maybe you planned to run 10 miles but only have time for five. Runners need to be flexible for many reasons.  I could go on and on about this because often it is frustrating.

  • Enthusiasm.

Being an enthusiastic runner is contagious! If you’re enthusiastic, you will inspire those around you to embrace running.  It feels great when someone says that they started running “because of you.”

Happy Running! Any other qualities of a runner that you can add?

Wednesday Word: Accountable

This week’s Word is ACCOUNTABLE.

What does it mean to be accountable?

“Required or expected to justify actions or decisions” (according to the dictionary.)

I started my running blog in March 2008 when my friend convinced me to to join No Boundaries and learn to run.  My blog began as a way to hold myself accountable for my running by putting everything out onto the Internet for everyone to see and (hopefully) inspiring others along the way.

How does my blog keep me accountable?

Keeps my training on track

There’s no better way to log your weekly miles than to put it on your blog. Plus, when you know others will see it, you’re more likely to be motivated to get out there and do it.

I plan my runs on Monday. And then update what I actually did on the following Monday. So when I don’t do exactly what I had planned, I can tell my readers what happened, hopefully imparting invaluable advice such as that all training plans must be flexible. I am human and I do skip runs or do extra ones.

Binding myself to my race times

As they say: “Pain is temporary, but race times live on the Internet forever.”

I keep a list on my blog of all my races and their times. I also have a page that shows my PRs.

Seeing that on my site is a daily reminder of what I am working toward as well as how far I’ve come.

It also shows that I have good days and bad days and that race times are pretty unpredictable.

Sense of community

The first thing that happened after I started writing my blog was that I discovered some local running bloggers.  Soon I met them in the flesh and they became “my friends.”

If I had not blogged, I wouldn’t have met these great ladies.

DSC01360

The longer I blogged, the more social media friends, I made. Three I’ve met and hope to meet more of you.

Many of them I will never meet, but my connection to them is just as strong. (I wish I could meet you all!!)

me & AJH (from Age Groups Rock)

before the race

image

There’s nothing like posting and having another blogger reply with a kind word of encouragement. And when you ask for advice, they are always there to help.

Helping others

Writing race reviews and posts on the struggles and triumphs of being an older runner can help others know that they are not alone.

There’s a whole bunch of runners out there dealing with the exact same trials and tribulations. I’m sure even younger runners can identify.

As runners, it’s not our speed or our age that binds us.  It’s that we share a special bond because “we run.”

I know that before I sign up for a big race, I scour the internet for reviews of the race. I find it very helpful when I read a fellow blogger’s honest account of a race. And when I am injured or have a running-related problem, I am relieved to find out that I am not the only one and also have received a lot of valuable advice in dealing with whatever ails or is bothering me.

Ambassadorships & Product Reviews

Once I started blogging, I was able to apply for several ambassadorships.

I am fortunate that a few companies actually picked me such as, SweatPink, Girls RunFast, SwirlGear (which no longer exists), Girls Gone Sporty, #RunChat, FitFluential, SkirtSports.

In most cases, it just means being part of a great running community.

In other cases, it means getting discounts on clothes.

IMG_6831

modeling my new SkirtSports top and skirt

And sometimes, you get the opportunity to try neat running-related products.

reviewing my LilyTrotter socks

and Huma Chia energy gel

These opportunities keep me accountable because I have to RUN and use the products!! Then on my blog, I am able to write an honest review which will be helpful to the company and to my readers.

Linkups

When I first started blogging, I just wrote whatever came to mind.  But now each day, you can participate in a different linkups.

Wednesday Word: Resolutions

Deb Runs

Posts can be fitness or health related, but don’t have to be, so really anyone can play along. Just be sure to link up with InLinkz on Deb’s main post, and share the love by reading and commenting on other’s participant’s posts.

This week’s Word is RESOLUTIONS.

According the dictionary, a resolution is a “firm decision to do or not to do something.”

If I did make resolutions, here’s what I would decide to do…

  • have a more positive attitude (In other words, whine and complain less…)
  • exercise more (go to the gym, it’s free!)
  • walk more (less sitting all day at work!)
  • focus less on pace & finish times and enjoy running more.
  • do yoga more often (if not classes then videos)
  • de-clutter my house (so much unnecessary stuff including clothes)
  • eat more healthy (less sweets, more fruits & veggies)
  • drink more water

Resolutions are easy to made.  The hard part is keeping to them.

Happy Running! Do you make resolutions each year? Tell me one.

Accomplishments

I am not athletic.  I never played any sports growing up.

In my late 40’s & early 50’s, tennis was my biggest accomplishment and a reason to celebrate.  Playing, forging great friendships and of course, winning.

3rd place at 2002 Nationals

1st place 2010 Regionals

But my biggest reason to celebrate *(and my biggest accomplishment) has been being able to RUN. Finishing Races.  Winning the occasional age group award.  Making friends – virtual and face-to-face. Most importantly, being healthy to experience it all.

this was a horribly difficult race and yet I am still smiling.

I could talk about family traditions

Holiday dinners, birthday celebrations.

There are also religious/holiday traditions.

I am Jewish and my hubby is Catholic so I get to celebrate both if I wish.

This week’s Word is CHERISH.

Of course, when I saw the word, this is all I could think of:

But seriously, this is an important word, especially in light of what has recently happened in Paris.

I’m not very creative so I’ll let these posters speak for themselves:

Wednesday Word: Complacent

This week’s Word is COMPLACENT

What does “Complacent” mean?

being satisfied with how things are and not wanting to try to make them better

Besides people in my life (and yes we can become complacent with relationships too), there are are few important areas where I could become complacent.

Career:

As a teacher and district technology director, complacent was never in my vocabulary.  I used to spend endless hours on my lesson plans to make sure that my students were successful.  I think I gave them 150%.  Thanks to FB, I can keep in touch with some of my favorite students (as the 2 below that I visited in CA.)

me, Maeghan & Erin

In my 2nd career, I wrote grants, gave workshops, etc trying to help administrators and teachers integrate technology in to their teaching.  It was exhausting but I loved it.

I definitely feel more complacent in job #3.  Of course, I want to improve things but I am less in control of the outcomes and as I approach retirement (if I ever can afford to retire), I want less stress in my life.

Health-related activities:

My first health-related obsession was tennis. I used to play almost everyday.  I took lessons and played on many teams.  Unfortunately my natural talent was less than my desire to be great. I improved from 2.5 to 3.0 and have remained at that level.

the competitive me in 2010

Since I became serious about running, I quit all my tennis teams and just play once a week (except for during my annual tennis vacation in May.) I play for fun so I say but of course, I want to win.

I may be complacent about speed drills, hill repeats, intervals, etc but I do want to improve.  I want to be a faster runner.

I run 3-4 times every week even in hot and freezing conditions.  I sign up for races – LOTS of them in hopes of getting better.

I never run a race without my Garmin and check my split paces after each race.

race_697_photo_14832070

Because I’m old, I do win a lot of age group awards.  Many runners even think I’m fast.  But I know better.

So I may not PR anymore but I will TRY my best to do so.

I do hate to admit it but I am complacent about stretching, strength training, and even eating healthy (I don’t use protein powder, never had a smoothie or an electrolyte drink. I buy frozen veggies rather than fresh, eat frozen waffles & pizza and the list goes on and on.)

Yes, I know I should.  And unfortunately, I probably won’t until something hurts.  Sad but true!

Happy Running!  Are you complacent about anything?

Wednesday Word: Perspective

This week’s Word is PERSPECTIVE

or according the dictionary, “a sensible way of judging how good, bad, important, etc. something is in comparison with other things.”

We stress about weather forecasts.

We get anxious about running hills.

We worry about our paces, our PRs, our split times…

We compare ourselves to other runners.

So how do we keep our running in perspective?

  • Don’t take running for granted.

Just think back to the last time you were injured.  Think about those who cannot run.

now and for the next 8 weeks

this is vivid in my mind

  • Forget about the current weather conditions.

When you’re cold, think back to when it was too hot and humid to run.

1798082_684504678254632_1919006174_n

a cold and wet one, for sure

When you’re sweating out there, think back to when you couldn’t run because of the ice and snow.

July - a humid half

the opposite – hot & humid

  • Run for fun.

Leave the Garmin home.  Run without thinking about your pace. Just enjoy the scenery or your thoughts.

walkwayhm2

Garmin was dead…oh well!

  • Accept things that you cannot control.

Accept that if you are aging, you will get slower.

race_697_photo_14832070

this may be my half PR. the 4 after have been much slower

There will be days that your runs suck and then there will be runs that are great.

2

ugh…done!

Some runners are just naturally faster (even without trying.)

  • Get someone to start running.

Inspiring someone else to run, seeing someone cross the finish line for the first time will change how you feel about running.

  • It’s only a training plan.

Plans are meant to be broken. There is no cookie cutter solution to running your best race.  Adjust the plan to meet your needs. This may mean skipping runs or shortening distances.

  • There will always be another race.

As soon as a disappointing race is over, sign up for another.

You can learn from your mistakes but you shouldn’t dwell on them. We always do our best but sometimes our best isn’t enough.
