TOTR: If I only knew then…

with Erika @ MCM Mama Runs,
Marcia @ Marcia’s Healthy Slice
and Patty @ My no-guilt life

This week’s topic is “If I only knew then…. What advice would you give your new runner self?

Another tough topic.

Before I took my first step, I joined a running group called No Boundaries.  They taught us what to wear, how to breathe, how to stretch, not to heel strike, etc. I had a coach and several mentors.

FRW - 2008

We had a training schedule and we ran outside no matter what the weather was like.

Being the impatient person that I am, although our first 5k was not scheduled until July, I ran my first 5k three weeks after my first run (which took place on April 1).  And I ran the whole 3.1 miles…not fast.. but I did it.

getting ready for the race

The picture above is funny because I never stretch.

I also started this blog, the day I signed up for No Boundaries and have continued posting even when I was injured and couldn’t run.

So what would I do differently?

  • Run with other runners more often.

After no Boundaries ended, I used to do most of my running alone.  I did run a lot of races and made running friends there.  But I still was uncomfortable joining a running group because I was a “beginner,” I was “older” and I thought that I wasn’t “fast enough.”

Now that I have joined a few groups, I know that age and pace do not matter.  It is more fun to run with someone else.

  • Run more miles in the beginning.

I ran about 100 miles the first year and 200 the second year.  I didn’t run when the weather was bad.  I took the whole winter off the first year.  And since I was only running 5ks, I could do them even if I only completed 1-1 1/2 miles for my weekday runs.

Now I run ALL year and my weekday runs are at least 3 miles.

img_9019

  • Run more than 3 miles.

I never ran more than 3 miles even on the weekends.  I was not building any endurance.  I got faster but I think I could have gotten even faster. I should have tried longer races rather than sticking to only 5ks.

Now even if I am not training for a big race, I try to run 5-6 miles on the weekend. I run a lot of 5ks but I have added 10ks, 15ks and other distances to my race schedule.

img_9045

  • Sign up for a half marathon sooner.

I don’t mean the first year but I waited a few years because I didn’t have the confidence that I could do it.  Finally I signed up for one and trained for it.  Then I discovered that ANYONE can run a half marathon.  You prepare for it.  And I realized for the half marathon, FINISHING=WINNING.

  • PRs are hard and unpredictable.

When I first started running, I gradually got faster.  Before I knew it, I was finishing my 5ks under 30 minutes.  But I kinda plateaued.  I didn’t finish one in 27:XX until a few years later (after I started running half marathons.) Of course, then there were several injuries and I felt like I was starting all over.

I never know if I am going to run a good race.  My PRs are surprises.  I can run the same course and my finish time will vary tremendously.

I now realize that there are so many factors that influence our runs – weather, training, health, course, elevation, terrain, etc. We just do our best and the PRs will happen …or not.

race_697_photo_14832070

Who knew that this would be a half marathon PR? I ran one on a similar course that was 20 minutes slower!

  • It may take years before you find the right running shoe.

I started with Saucony, then there was Asics, Brooks, Mizuno, even Hokas. With each new brand, I kept thinking that this was it!

8 years later I am wearing Nikes.  No far so good.

img_8713

  • Speed isn’t everything. Enjoy your runs!

When I first started, I was worried about getting faster (doesn’t everyone?) I had a Nike chip on my shoe that synced with my iPod. Then I got a Garmin. I always uploaded my data and fretted about my pace.

Now I only wear my Garmin for racing.  For my other training runs, I only care about distance.  I don’t look at my pace. I don’t upload it or post it anywhere.

And yes, running is a lot more fun.

No watch! 🙂 Don’t care about pace!

This week’s topic is What one word describes your running lately?

Hmmmm.  That’s a tough one.

But I would say Hopeful.

I don’t train well or do I train?

Since I don’t run any drills or do any speed work, my runs have been pretty slow!!

Plus I hadn’t done many short races all winter or fall.

And I seemed to be always training for half marathons.  That means slow long runs on the weekend and easy weekday runs for fear of an injury messing up my big race.

a hilly half in March

Racing season in the Northeast has officially begun.  There are many races scheduled each weekend. Since I love to race, it’s hard for me to keep myself from registering for them.

The first one was a 5 mile race.  I was worried because I hadn’t run fast in so long….

Shamrock Shuffle

I was surprised with the results. A 46:28 finish and 3rd place AG award made me hopeful.

A week later, I ran a 5K. 5k races are even harder.  Again, it had been many months since I ran one so I didn’t know what to expect.

But I finished in 27:55 with a 1st place AG award.

img_8935

Neither of these races were close to a PR and I may never get there again.  Also, I walked during both races.  I used to be able to run without walking. My endurance is gone and since I am still training for those half marathons, I don’t think it will return any time soon.

However, I am injury-free and I am hopeful for decent results in my spring races.

Alert: this post was written before my race last Sunday.  I was not pleased with how it went 😦

But I am still hopeful.

Happy Running! How would you describe your running lately?

TOTR: Sponsorships

with Erika @ MCM Mama Runs,
Marcia @ Marcia’s Healthy Slice
and Patty @ My no-guilt life

This week’s topic is Dream sponsor? Brand ambassadorship? What’s yours?

I am already a Skirt Sports Ambassador and I am very happy with that. I love their clothes.

Celebrate Life HM
So what else do I spend a lot of money on??

  • Race Fees

Rock N Roll Race ambassador.  That would be nice. I’ve only run one of their races but I would run more if they chose me.

welcome image

I love racing so I would accept a sponsorship from other races, as well.

  • Running Shoes

Yeah, I buy a lot of these.  Nike, Mizuno, Brooks, anyone??

img_8947

Nike: My feet love you!!!

  • Fuel

Gu is my fuel of choice for during my long runs and half marathons.

I also eat energy bars before and  after running. My favorite brands include:

  • Socks

For long runs and racing, I love ProCompression.

stockafeathon13b

I also wear Balegas and Smart Wool.

  • Bras

Handful is my preferred bra but they discontinued the one I like.

I’d like to try the new ones but they are $50!

  • Other Apparel Items

And if Lululemon, or Athleta offered me a sponsorship, I’d accept.

TOTR: When To Wear Your Race Shirt

with Erika @ MCM Mama Runs,
Marcia @ Marcia’s Healthy Slice
and Patty @ My no-guilt life

This week’s topic is Race shirt controversy: Wear TO the race or only AFTER the race?

AFTER!!!

They say it’s bad luck but it’s not that.  First of all, most of the time I don’t get my race shirt until the day of the race.  If it’s a destination race, even if I get it the day before, I have already planned my outfit.  Plus I wouldn’t know whether it is comfortable to run in or not. Believe it or not, I still sometimes get cotton shirts. And many are unisex and even the small is too big.

After a big race, however, I usually can’t wait to wear my shirt.

And those cotton shirts.  I give them away and use the long sleeved ones as throw aways in races.

Nope. I’ve never worn my race shirt TO a race.

TOTR: What’s Hard About Running?

with Erika @ MCM Mama Runs,
Marcia @ Marcia’s Healthy Slice
and Patty @ My no-guilt life

This week’s topic is The hardest part of running is _______.

I was tempted to say EVERYTHING.

I don’t find running easy.  I am not a natural athlete.

For me, long runs are hard.  Speed workouts are hard.  Hills are hard. 5ks are hard.  Half Marathons are hard.

2

this explains it all (after the First Watch HM in March 2013)

You get the picture.

But the hardest part about running is expectations.

I’m not saying that it’s not good to push yourself. It is.

But if we are always expecting to be faster or expecting a PR or expecting an age group award, then we are disappointed when we don’t meet our expectations.

If running is filled with disappointments, then it no longer becomes enjoyable.

This is very hard too.  How do you know how high to set the bar?

If I am not sore after a race, did I not push myself hard enough?

If my time was too slow, did I walk too much?

Can I run faster? Have I peaked?

Am I too old to be able to finish that fast?

But if we set NO expectations, then we can enjoy the run more.

clhm

No expectations. Just finish without any pain. Happy to have participated with friends and to have supported an important cause.

It will be hard but I hope I can do this more often:

and remember this:

Happy Running! What is the hardest thing about running for you?

This week’s topic is The Best Thing About Running is…

I certainly could not just limit it to ONE thing!!

So in no particular order, here are the BEST things about running for me:

  • New friends I have made

  • Guilt-free carb-loading (before & after a run or race)

  • Best way to end a bad day (or start off a tough day)

Tuesdays on the Run: Running “Uniforms”

with Erika @ MCM Mama Runs,
Marcia @ Marcia’s Healthy Slice
and Patty @ My no-guilt life

This week’s topic is Running “uniforms.” If you could only wear one running outfit for the rest of the year, what would it be?

I think where I live, that would be tough.  But if I could, this would be my “running uniform”:

IMG_6831

  • Baseball cap – it keeps my unruly hair out of my way
  • Tank top – I hate to hot when I am running
  • Running skirt – so comfortable, look better on me than shorts, and the pockets can hold stuff
  • Compression sleeves or socks – help my legs recover faster, I think
  • Running shoes – the brand varies but now my faves are Nike Zoom Vomero 10s (in the pic below)

bazu-7532702 (1)

Unfortunately, I live in upstate New York and I can only wear my preferred outfit from June-August. That’s probably why I take two race-cations in Florida each year.

Happy Running! What would your running uniform look like?

Tuesdays on the Run: Favorite Race Medals

This week’s topic is Favorite Race Medals

Most of my medals come from half marathons. And I love them ALL! I mean they mean that I actually ran 13.1 miles!!!

I have won a lot of age group awards so I have medals from those races and a few from some shorter distances.

It was hard to choose but I’d say that these are my favorites:

  • Sarasota Music Half Marathon 2016

img_8367

Of course, this is from my most recent half marathon.  I just loved this race course.

  • Naples Daily News Half Marathon 2011

A medal from my first ever half marathon…what more can I say?

  • First Watch Half Marathon 2013

IMG_4482

This was from another half in Florida. It was my first half marathon after my ankle surgery plus I love dolphins. I think that  this is my heaviest medal.

  • Walkway Half Marathon 2015

Walkway Half Marathon

This is one of the few medals that I have that is not made of metal – it is made out of wood.

  • RNR Brooklyn Half Marathon 2015

This is the arch in Prospect Park where the race began. This was the first time I had been back to Brooklyn since I was 5 years old. I used to live near there when I was little.

  • The Love Run 2014

I’ll never forgot running 13.1 miles in a monsoon rainstorm in order to get this medal.

  • Adirondack Distance Run 2014

This was from a bucket list 10 miler that I ran along Lake George. The race ends at the marina where we keep our boat.

  • Freihofer Run for Women 2012

They don’t normally give medals for this 5k but in 2012 you were able to purchase one.  I only did because I got a discounted registration so it didn’t cost me much.  I didn’t know at the time that I would break my ankle and that this would be my first run.  So this medal is very meaningful to me.

Happy Running! Where did you get your favorite medal? Why is it your favorite?

Tuesdays on the Run: Race Shirts

img_7152

This week’s topic is Race shirts: Faves and the ones we love to hate.

I have run over 170 races so I have gotten a lot of shirts!! Some I’ve loved and some I’ve never worn again.

I like those race shirts that are practical meaning that I will wear them after the race.

Here are some of my favorites:

  • Perfect 10 miler 2014

This hoodie is made of tech material and I love the color and the fit.  I’ve worn it many times.

  • Mother’s Day bRUNCh 5k 2015

This one is also a tech shirt.  I love the bright color and the design.

  • Adirondack Distance Run 2014

This is the only race shirt that I have gotten that is sleeveless. I wear it often in the summer.

  • Delmar Dash 2014

This one is v-necked, long sleeve and very comfortable.  I also like the colors.

  • Bacon Hill Bonanza 2014

What I like about this short-sleeved shirt besides the color is that it has NO SPONSORS on the back.  I have even worn it to play tennis.

  • Last Run 2010.

This race used to give windbreakers every year. So I also have one in orange, blue, green & yellow.  They are so practical.

  • Walkway Half Marathon 2015

IMG_6129

I like this shirt because it is very light and made out of all natural materials.

  • Freihofer’s Run for Women 2012

I love the purple color and the material of this shirt. I have another in green but they have since change the style and material.

  • Great Pumpkin Challenge 2014

IMG_7527

This is a great shirt for the fall. I have it in black and yellow, as well.

And which race shirts do I hate?

Well, any one that is unisex.  They do not fit.  The sleeves are too long and they are too big even in a size small.

And any shirt that is 100% cotton.

Most of the shirts that I do not like have been made into a Repat quilt or given to my running buddy.  Sometimes I do wear them to sleep in or clean or garden.
