There’s no better way to look back on the good things that happened than by looking through your blog photos.

So here’s a month by month look at the highlights of 2013:

January:

running over a bridge while on vacation in Daytona Beach, Florida

February:

July:

recovered enough to complete the Biggest Loser 5K

August:

no races this month but several trips to scenic Chestertown to play tennis and run

September:

winning an AG award at the Helper’s Fund 10k where I met a new running partner, Heidi

October:

The National Running Challenge is a challenge for runners who run races. Each challenge series runs for several months.  All you have to do is after each race, enter your stats to earn points. Your finishing time does not matter! The longer the race, the more points you get. However, there needs to be an official results page. (Unfortunately, several of my races did not have official results like the Delmar Turkey Trot and the Stuff the Sleigh 5k).)

The Fall series is now running, with races from September 14th to December 31st.

Well, as you can see, I’m in 48th place BUT in my age group I am FIRST (out of 2)!

If you are leading  in the standings, whether it is overall or age group, you may win prizes! The prizes can be anything from gift cards to running related items!

So you may win a prize even if you are not fast.  That is cool!

Polar Cap 4m Race Report

pc13

I ran this race with blogger AJH 2 years ago and it was a tough hilly one but still fun.

Polar Cap - 2nd place in AG

Here we are winning AG awards

AJH is running it again and I was looking forward to seeing her.

Racing and training are difficult to coordinate. This weekend should be 8 miles for me. So I can add on 4 after the race (which is doubtful) or do 8 tomorrow (Hmmm 2 days in a row???)

I had no expectations for this race. It is my 3rd time racing 4 miles but I am in no way as good a shape as the two previous times (40:11 & 38:02). So I just wanted to have fun and feel good. An AG award would be a bonus!

It was about 18 degrees and sunny when I left the house. I had about an hour drive. As I drove north, the temps dropped and the clouds rolled in.

I got there early and was surprised at how crowded the parking lot was. I immediately found a spot in the cafeteria to leave ALL my stuff, picked up my bib & headed to the restroom (a real one) and there behind me on line was AJH.

It was nice to run a race with a familiar face. AJH brought her hubby which was convenient for taking photos.

Here we are indoors before the race

Here we are indoors before the race

The race is pretty informal…no timing chips. The sun came out as we started so I decided to take the sleeves off my jacket and wear a windbreaker over it and my turtleneck. (I was actually perfectly dressed, the only things that were cold were my feet & I was wearing smart wool socks.)

We are starting (I am wearing that blue windbreaker)

The race is starting (I am wearing that blue windbreaker) – taken by AJH’s hubby

The race started with a hill right off the bat. I was discouraged cause it was tough but then things got better. I tried to run a consistent slow pace and if possible NOT WALK.

part of the course (taken after the race…the lake is on the bottom right

I know that from the last time, there was a long hill between miles 3 & 4 and I had to walk.

This time, it didn’t seem as bad and I ran the whole time. I even had enough gas to sprint through the finish line.

There I go… (taken by AJH’s hubby)

According to my Garmin, I crossed at 41:37. Officially 41:40.

And it was good enough for 3rd place in my Age Group 🙂

AJH got 2nd place...we won a lunch bag which matches the race shirt

AJH got 2nd place…we won a lunch bag which matches the race shirt

AJH also won a Road ID as a raffle prize.

The food was pretty good – chocolate milk, soup and lots of homemade desserts. I will definitely do this race again next year (& try to keep the AG award streak going… in a new AG)

As far as the race, I was happy with my performance.

Mile 1: 10:24
Mile 2: 10:29
Mile 3: 10:38 (the hill)
Mile 4: 10:16

I was under 11 min miles but of course, when I was running my best, I was under 10 minutes.

It was not even close to a PR but then again I didn’t expect one.

I didn’t run 4 more miles. I changed my clothes and headed out on the road. I drove north along the lake to Bolton Landing.

Then I headed back to village to see some friends who were working at the Winter Carnival.

There were outhouse races on the ice, pony rides (not on the ice), chili cook-off, etc.

I was too cold to hang around long. The wind had picked up and it seemed a lot colder than in the morning.

obviously the cold does not bother the ducks

So I left and on my way home, I made a quick stop at the outlets. I only bought 2 baseball caps that were on sale at the Reebok store.

Tomorrow there is another free race. I may do the 4 miler or I may just run on my own.. We’ll see how these old legs feel.

Happy Running! Did you run or race this weekend?

Liebster Blog Award

My fellow blogger, I Run For Wine has nominated me for a Liebster Blog Award! Thanks to Gayle for the recognition. This award is a way for bloggers with less than 200 followers who deserve some recognition and support to keep on blogging.

Why I Love Running

I meant to write this on Valentine’s Day but for the last 7 weeks I have been kinda depressed.  I can’t run and I don’t know if I will again.  But I did run and I do ❤ running so here’s my list (in no particular order):

  1. the new friends I have made
  2. guilt-free carb-loading (before & after a run or race)
  3. the best way to end a bad day (or start off a tough day)
  4. an excuse to shop – buy new running clothes, shoes, gear, etc.
  5. setting your own goals (run your “own” race)
  6. how you feel when crossing the finish line in a race
  7. feeling healthy & active & alive
  8. sense of pride & accomplishment (I’m 58 and running half marathons!!)
  9. being alone and getting lost in one’s own thoughts
  10. the bling 🙂

Ask Me Anything…

AJH at Age Groups Rock tagged me for the question/answer post that is spreading  through the bloggersphere.  You have time to ask me some questions in the comment section and then next week. I will answer them.

Since I am not running,  it will give me something to talk about.   So ask my anything and I will promise try to answer.

Here are my 5 nominees: (They are all local from my area.)

  • Felice at The Happy Runner.  She had a baby 9 mos ago and you wouldn’t believe how FAST she runs!!!
  • Suzy at Running on my time.  She recently finished her Masters, is a stay at home mom to 2 kids and is training for her 1st marathon.
  • Heather at Then Heather Said.  Her blog is so inspiring and creative.  She is a runner but much more.
  • Jen at Jen is Green.  She took up running and lost a lot of weight.  She continues to run and eat healthy.
  • Bridget at Our Life, Our World…My Thoughts. She ran her 1st 5K a little over a year ago and is already training for her 2nd Half Marathon.

Happy Running!  Think up those questions!

Polar Cap 4 Mi. Race Report

A new race and a new distance for me.  I love Lake George (in the summer!) But it is hilly.  And it’s cold and snowy!!

What the heck, it’s a PR.

So I got up early on a Saturday morning to run a race!

My husband remarked, “You’re gonna drive over an hour for a race!?” I replied that I know someone who drove 3 hours for a race.

It was a beautiful morning.  The predicted snowstorm was postponed until  the afternoon.  It was about 15 degrees, sunny, very little wind. I was very tired because I went to bed too late. (Friday is Mah Jongg night.)

I was almost there when fellow blogger, AJH, texted me that she was there!  I didn’t know she was going to run it but I know she has run this race several times before.  I was thrilled to have the company.  (My friend Mary has a hip stress fracture 😦 )

I thought it was going to be cold so I dressed in 3 top layers, hat, gloves, tights shorts, wool socks.

AJH & me before the race

I was wrong.  It was sunny.  I was overdressed.  I immediately took off my gloves & unzipped my jacket.

pic taken by AJH

The course was very scenic.  There were views of the snow covered mountains as well as the lake.

It was not an easy course.  At first there were some small hills.  I was running well.  Under 10 min/mi.  That was until the last killer unending hill.   I walked and then I walked again and then I walked.  I hate that! Until my half marathon, I never walked during a race.

heading for the finish

happy to be almost done

All of a sudden, I became competitive and regained my strength and sprinted through the finish line.  The walking killed my time but I at least made up some at the end and crossed at 40:09. (Official results say: 40:11)

AJH took this of me finishing

(I didn’t take any pics during the race but I snapped a few after.)

AJH at the finish line

It was my first 4 mile race so I have a PR.  I love racing so I am happy!  I will do better at the next one.

my split times

I was so sweaty that I quickly got chilled so we went inside to change clothes and wait for the awards.  (There were under 200 people in this race so the chance for an award was pretty good.)

The refreshments consisted of chicken soup and lots of baked goods but I really wasn’t hungry.

Guess what?  AJH & I both won Age Group awards (We are in the same group.)  Although AJH finished way ahead of me, she won 2nd and I won 3rd. Cool!

We won soup bowls with spoons

AJH left & I stayed in Lake George for a while.  I hope that we get a chance to race together again.  I think we will because she’s the one I was referring to when I said I “I know someone she drives 3 hours for a race.”

I headed into town because there was a lot going on.  It’s the first weekend of the 50th Lake George Winter Carnival.

But first, I had my running reward:

vanilla latte & apple scone

Then I met my friends (who are chairpersons of the Carnival) and watched some of the events – skydiving, dogsled races,  etc.

I stopped off at the outlets on my way home but my wallet was saved by the snowstorm.  It started to snow hard and I left.  As I drove south, the snow turned to sleet, then to freezing rain and then to just rain. (At least the salt got washed off my car.)

So now it’s back to training. I don’t have a race planned until March & I think it’s another 4 miler 🙂

Happy Running!
