My Favorite Month Has Ended…

May was a pretty good month:

went on my tennis vacation to Florida

turned 59 on 5-9

got to visit with my Russian friend Anna

started boating on Lake George

did a lot of biking

ran my first mile

Here were my May Goals:

  • Continue PT 1-2x per week. Yes, except when on vacation.
  • Do exercises on my own, as well 1-2x per day. Yes, but not a diligently as before.
  • Use exercise bike and/or treadmill at work on days with no PT. Yes, when raining bcause I have been walking outside.
  • Go biking outdoors 1-2x per week. Yes and everyday when on vacation.
  • Go for walks outside. Yes, everyday at lunch.
  • Run outside (at least a few steps or maybe on a track.) Yes, one mile on dirt/sand 4 times so far
  • Hit a few tennis balls (maybe practice serving or volleying) Yes, while on vacation.
  • STAY POSITIVE!! Trying but it is tough!

So I think I’ve met all my goals in recent months so it’s time to switch things up.

June Goals:

  • Run/Walk a 5k in less than 45 min.
  • Run a mile in less than 12 min/mile
  • Run 3 miles (with few walk breaks)
  • Sign up for a 5k

How’s that for optimism?

Happy Running!  How did you do in May?

Happy Birthday to Me in Florida

I am 59 years old today!! That’s 59 on 5-9!

I don’t feel it (and I hope I don’t look it!!) I don’t think I act that old, either.

As far as running goes, if  you asked me 5 years ago if I would run in a 5k race, I would have laughed in your face.  But I have run 50 of them (taking 10 minutes off my finish time in the process.)

If you asked me two years ago if I would run a half marathon, I would have done the same. And I have run 5 halfs, too.

my proudest moment

However, on the flip side, a year ago, I never would have thought that I would not be running today.  I may have even though that I would have run my first marathon by now.

Besides my ankle, I am healthy.  It will heal.  I will run again. So…

I have my family and awesome friends.  I am on vacation!!! I feel blessed.

Happy Running! Thanks for stopping by!

Looking Forward to May…

I bet you are tired of me whining about my ankle & how I can’t run….

Yeah, me too!

So I’ll talk about how excited I am about May (and it has unfortunately nothing to do with running.)

1.  Anna is coming to the US.  In April 2002, 2004 & 2006, I participated in a teacher program where we went to Kursk, Russia to visit schools & we stayed with a family.  My family was Anna.  So I haven’t seen her since 2006.  The last time she came to the US was 2003.

hiking in Vt during her 2003 visit

I am going to see her in NYC on May 5 and then she is staying with me on May 6. I am super excited to see her again.

2.  I am going to Naples, Fla for the annual tennis ladies trip.  Although I can’t play tennis, I loves Naples and the beach and the warm weather.

at the beach 🙂

group photo at "The Dock"

I will be there May 8-15. Can’t wait for this vacation!

3. It’s the beginning of the Lake George boating season.

Our marina opens on May 15.  We may not stay there until Memorial Day weekend

.

4. Lastly, my birthday is May 9!!

Happy Running!  What is your favorite month?

Why I Love Running

I meant to write this on Valentine’s Day but for the last 7 weeks I have been kinda depressed.  I can’t run and I don’t know if I will again.  But I did run and I do ❤ running so here’s my list (in no particular order):

  1. the new friends I have made
  2. guilt-free carb-loading (before & after a run or race)
  3. the best way to end a bad day (or start off a tough day)
  4. an excuse to shop – buy new running clothes, shoes, gear, etc.
  5. setting your own goals (run your “own” race)
  6. how you feel when crossing the finish line in a race
  7. feeling healthy & active & alive
  8. sense of pride & accomplishment (I’m 58 and running half marathons!!)
  9. being alone and getting lost in one’s own thoughts
  10. the bling 🙂

Happy Running!  Anything to add about why you love running?

My Guest Post – You’re Not Over the Hill…Why You Should Run… Advice for women in their later years

This is really cool.  Below is my post on Adventure Is Out There.

I hope to have a Guest Blogger on my Blog this week!!  STAY TURNED!!

You’re Not Over the Hill…Why You  Should Run… Advice for women in their later years,…  (in no particular order):

  • Run with younger women; it makes you feel younger.

the running group and then some

All of these women could be my daughters but when I am part of the group, I feel like an equal.  We are runners and cheer each other on.  Age doesn’t seem to matter.

  • Run races, you will meet awesome people; some will even become your friends.

    Mary & I after a race

Mary asked me to take a photo after a race over a year ago and we became instant friends. We have entered races together…we have supported each other through injuries.  We found out that we have a lot in common, but running is how we first met.

  • Running gives you energy.

    running one morning

I am not a morning person.  I struggle to get out of bed.  I consider resetting the alarm clock every time.  But I have never regretted running before work.  Even after the worst runs, in the worst weather conditions, I always feel GOOD!  The rest of the day always goes better.  I have MORE energy on the days I run than on the ones I don’t.

  • Register for races, it will keep you running.

Holding My Breath for the rain to stop

Whenever I feel that I don’t want to go out for a run, I register for a race.  Then I know that I MUST run. In the beginning, I was running all my races by myself.  I still enjoyed the experience.  Running races is motivating.  Running races adds to your shirt collection.  Running races gives you some cool gifts (water bottles, magnets, raffle prizes, etc.).  Running races gets you a free breakfast.  Running races gives you a goal for improving your  pace. Running races gets you out of bed early on weekends.  Running races is a good way to contribute to a charity!  Running races introduces you to others with the same interest – running. Running races is addicting (at least for me, it is)!!

  • You will get faster (to a point).

    Mother’s Day 5k Race ’11

I finished my first 5K (April 2008)  in around 37 minutes and I was thrilled.   It took me all summer that year to break 30 minutes. Of course, the next year, I wanted to break 30 minutes all the time.  Well, that didn’t happen but I found that if you run consistently, you will get faster.  Now I break 30 minutes most of the time.  I even have a PR of 27:30!!  I know I can be faster but not much.  Realistically, I will not run a 5k in 20 minutes!! I’m ok with that.

  • Age Groups awards are even more possible.

    lst in AG

So… most of the runners in a typical race are younger than you.  The odds are that you have a better shot at an award.  I am not real fast but I have won many age group awards.  Of course, this doesn’t always happen!  There are a lot of FAST runners in my age group.  Look at Joan Benoit Samuelson!!!!

  • You can run longer races.

    Half in Naples, Florida

I didn’t figure this one out right away.  I thought that since I was older, I could NOT do a long distance. Then I decided that I should try it.   Life is short and what did I have to lose.  So I ran my first half marathon this past January and crossing the finish line was one of the proudest moments of my life. I ran my 2nd in April and I plan to continue running at least 1 or 2 a year.  What about a full marathon??  That I’m not sure about.  It’s not that I think I can’t.  It’s that the training is so time-consuming.

  • You may get injured and then you will start stretching.

When I was part of the No Boundaries program, they taught us to stretch before and after every run. On my own, did I follow this?? NO!!!!!!!! Why?  Laziness…no time…I don’t need to, etc.  Well, I have my first running injury and it SUCKS!!!  I am starting to heal and before I run, I stretch.  During my run, I stretch.  After my run, I stretch.  I think stretching is important and especially if you are older.  I hope I remember this and when I am un-injured, I continue to STRETCH!

  • Dress like a runner; wear those cute clothes.

I don’t care that I’m 58!  I’m wearing those cute tank tops and short running skirts!!  I always dress for the sport.  I have tennis outfits.  Golf outfits.  Yoga outfits! Workout outfits! So of course, as soon as I started running, I accumulated running outfits.  For me, I feel like I do better when I look better.

  • Read Blogs (or maybe start your own.)

    racing with fellow blogger AJH

As soon as I started running, I started a blog.  I thought it would keep me accountable to my running.  I would post my goals and write about my experiences.  I could also keep track of the races I had run and my mileage.  However, blogging is so much more.  I learn so much by reading other blogs.  They are motivating, entertaining  and part of my everyday life.  I feel like some of the bloggers are my friends and I think they are.  I have even met some (Felice, Suzy, Amanda, Andrea) at races.

  • Run all year round not just when the weather is perfect.

I HATE THE COLD!! When I first started running, I quit in October when the weather got cold. In the spring, I started up  running again and it took a while to get back to where I was. So the next year, I joined a gym and when it got cold, I ran on the treadmill.  I DO NOT enjoy running on the treadmill!! But it kept me in shape during those cold months.  This past winter, I decided to run outside no matter how cold.  And it wasn’t bad.  I definitely prefer it to the treadmill.  I still use the treadmill when it is raining, a blizzard or very icy.  But for the most part, I run outside all year long.

  • Use a Garmin.

I was resistant at first.  I didn’t think I needed one.  Then I got a Nike plus which tracked my distance and time.  I used it until this past January.  But it really was not accurate because it is not a GPS.  I used it to train for my first half and didn’t know the difference.  Now that I have a Garmin, I don’t know how I lived without one.   I know exactly how fast I am running at all times.  I know my overall pace.  I love to download my stats to the computer to see the whole picture.  When did I run the fastest, the slowest, where were the hills, when did I stop, etc.  I did run my 2nd half without it and felt lost the whole time.  Now I never run or walk without it!

  • Those who don’t run will think you’re awesome.

or as they say: Even if you’re slow, you’re faster than someone sitting on the couchOther runners know that it is mind over matter.  You can do it if you set your mind to it.  Those who have never tried think that I am a super hero for running  13.1 in freezing rain.  I know that I am not and they could do it too.  I was like them at one time —  Awestruck by anyone who could finish a 5k.

  • JUST DO IT!

    my proudest moment

You won’t regret it!

Happy Running (at any age)!

Post B-Day Post

Unfortunately, I had to work yesterday (since I am taking 6 days off  for vacation starting tomorrow).  But I did  have a nice birthday:

  • I ran 3 miles after work – no Garmin, just enjoyed the sunshine!
  • I had a free Coconut Mocha Frappuccino & mini cupcake at Starbucks (found a Starbucks card in the road while running)
  • I played tennis (doubles) and won both sets
  • I received so many birthday wishes (thanks to Facebook)
  • I talked my husband out of getting me an iPhone and got a Pandora bracelet and gift certificate to a bookstore

That’s my motto...I’m going to continue to enjoy an active life as long as my body lets me.

Happy Running!

Silks & Satins 5K Race Report

This was my 3rd year running in this race so I knew where the race was and that it was a flat course. I was pretty excited since I usually run alone but this race I was meeting 2 women — one who I met at my last race and one who I’ve only met online – both started running in their 50’s so we have a connection!!!

It had rained all night and when I left my house it was  very HUMID.  I was surprised that at 6:45 am it was already 72 degrees – Oh No!!

This 5k coincides with the opening of the Saratoga Racetrack which draws people from all over the world. I got there early enough to find parking.  Last year there were about 1200 people but this year only 800 or so…the weather??

I looked for AJH and luckily for cell phones, we found each other before the start.

Then I found Mary, as well.

AJH & I started near the front.  Since the clock starts when the first runners leaves, I don’t like to hang back.  Mary, however, headed toward the back.

I quickly lost AJH.  I knew that I couldn’t keep her pace. My first mile, however, was faster than it should have been in this weather (under 9 min).  I think I continued to get slower each mile, as a result. This is a flat course so I was hoping to PR.  As I approached the finish line, I saw 29… and  I was disappointed.  I wished I had kept my mile 1 pace & didn’t walk at the water stop.  My final time was 29:34.  At least I was under 30 minutes and faster than last year 🙂

There was a lot of food at this race but I was too hot to eat much. I found AJH who had a SUPER race. (26 minutes os so) Her fastest 5k this year!! She is amazing!!!

We hung around for the awards.  There were a lot of  FAST runners at this race (esp. in our age group).  AJH came in 6th and I came in 10th so no awards for us…  I never found Mary but I spoke to her on the phone later.  (She felt sick and was disappointed at her 31 minute time so left right away.)

AJH & I hung around for awhile watching the horses warm up and chatting about running.

She may even have convinced me to run a longer race some day… Hopefully, we will connect again for another race in NY or VT…(Check out her blog for her race report.)

Mary & I made plans to run together this Friday and she signed up to do the Fasig Tipton 5k with me on Aug. 7.  She wants to do a 5k in under 30 min and I want to run a longer race..so I hope we can help each other.

Happy Running and Have a great Weekend!
