It’s that time again. Time to get things off my chest with Marcia’s Runfessions at Marcia’s Healthy Slice…
1. I runfess…
I recently skipped one of my favorite 5ks – Run for the Roses (2022 recap).
Of course, I checked the results.
I didn’t need to because my running friends, Janet and Sue (pictured above) texted me and thanked me for NOT coming.
2. I runfess…
The reasons that I skipped this race were not totally related to running.
I could have run the race. My finish time is always under 30 minutes but I’m pretty sure it would be slower today but not too slow to win an age group award.
I wanted go to the gym (as I always do on Sunday) and the weather was perfect for boating (several Sundays have been rainy and last Sun, my hubby was sick)
3. I runfess…
I’m still on the fence about future 5ks. Do I run them as I did in past years???
-
- 09-09-23 – Malta 5k
- 09-30-23 – Great Pumpkin Challenge OR Barn to Bridge Fall Fest 5k
I like having company on my long runs but they conflict with these races.
And this year since I am marathon training, my long runs seem much more important…
4. I runfess…
It’s been a strange running year. Last year I ran NINE half marathons.
Due to a broken foot, I’ve only run ONE!
I have two more scheduled in September but I’m only thinking of them as marathon training runs.
5. I runfess…
Instead of worrying about my races, I am stressing about that dreadful 20 mile training run. (Remember I do not like to run alone..)
-
- When?
- Where?
- With whom? (some of my running partners may be away…)
- As part of a half marathon (as I did in 2019) or one long run?
- 7 +13 = 20
Happy Running! Anything to runfess this month? Please share.

I definitely understand how 5ks can get in the way of long runs. Hope you work out the friends and logistics of that 20 miler! Exciting!

HOLD UP–you skipped a race to go to the gym? Wow! Lol!
Is there a 20 mile training run you can jump in? There’s a big one here for Chicago–you get a t-shirt and everything. I would totally do that if you can.

I know. Working out! Who is this person?
In NYC there are 20 mile group runs but not in my area. I’ll figure something out.

One way or another, I’m sure you’ll get your 20 miler done. Plus now you know what to expect.
So have you really missed running all those halfs?

I am sure I will but if not, 18 will have to do… 20 miler is not required but mentally it does help.
Of course, I’ve missed those halfs!!! Financially since they were non-refundable but mostly mentally. You don’t feel that sense of accomplishment and enjoy the excitement of the other runners and spectators when you just run… at least I don’t.

Everyone has different reasons for running.

We try to help our friends w the longer training miles by arranging to meet up with them at certain points almost like a relay so they have someone to run with the whole time. Maybe you can try that!

Do not stress about that long run!!! If worst comes to worst and your friends aren’t available, do it as part of a half marathon. I would do something like, run four miles first, so when you finish the half you’ll think “oh, I only have three miles to go!” You’ll get it done. It’ll be fun!

I am sure I will… some way, some how.

20 miles seems daunting now but when you’ve worked up to close to that gradually over time, it won’t seem so bad. Easy for me to say, I know, when I’m not the one training for a marathon, but I know you’ll be fine.

Thanks for your vote of confidence…. It will be hard but hopefully the weather will cooperate.

Haha, I’m with Wendy’s shock over you skipping the race for the gym!! LOL! You are 100% right on the long runs – those should be prioritised this marathon training cycle!

I will try to get them done. Fingers crossed 🤞

I am group for 20s all the way, too! As Wendy mentioned, we have a great 20 miler here in Chicago. If you can’t find one, I’d recommend running 3 – 4 miles, half marathon at training pace, 3 – 4 miles. That breaks things up and gives company and motivation.

Great idea. Thanks… Last time I ran 7 miles before the half.

I had the same reaction as Wendy – I didn’t think I’d see the day that you’d pass up a race for the gym!
Hopefully, you can coordinate with enough friends to have company for most of your 20 miler otherwise I’d opt for looking for a race and then tacking miles on.

Ha Ha. Will I become a gym rat?… Nope.
20 miles is daunting to me. But somehow I’ll figure it out.

I hear ya on that impending 20-mile run. I was training for the Air Force Marathon in 2020 when Covid hit. I deferred to 2021, but it still was cancelled & I haven’t felt the desire to commit to another marathon…yet. I’ve done nine, so I WILL do at least one more, just not sure when or where.

Wow. 9? Impressive. I was happy with one.
You should enter the lottery for nyc next year.

Fitting a 5k into a plan for a longer run can be tough because of all the logistics. I do hope you find a friend or two for your long runs!

It can be hard to fit in all the things you want to do, especially when marathon training. I say just do what feels right, when it feels right.
