TT: 2023 Goals Check-in and the #13 Jinx

Back in January, I was confident that this was going to be a great running year. At least SIX half marathons were planned and maybe a full in addition to countless other shorter races.

Here were the 13 goals I set: (Did I jinx things by picking 13?)

  1. Run at least 1000 miles
  2. Run at least 3x a week (with one being a Long Run)
  3. Run with others (as often as possible)
  4. Run at least 25 races
  5. Volunteer (at several races)
  6. Participate in at least one Blogger Meet-Up
  7. Try something new
  8. Listen to more podcasts
  9. Update my music playlist
  10. No Injuries
  11. No PWs
  12. No DNS or DNF races
  13. Blog 3x each week

They all seemed so achievable and realistic.

Well, there’s still 8 months left in the year but Goal#10 certainly has changed everything!!

  1.   Run at least 1000 miles

Need a big adjustment.  Now barring any more time off from running, I’d like to run at least 800 miles.

2. Run at least 3x a week (with one being a Long Run)

Before Feb 14 and after March 20, this was and it will be again possible.

3. Run with others (as often as possible)

Same as #2.

4. Run at least 25 races

As with #1, this needs to be reduced. Maybe 12 races?

5. Volunteer (at several races)

Yes. One good thing about being injured and not racing is that you have time to volunteer.

6. Participate in at least one Blogger Meet-Up

Yes but the 2nd one did not go as planned.

7. Try something new

Still working on this one.

Does going to the gym count?

8. Listen to more podcasts

Yes. Also the result of not running and using the stationary bike.

9. Update my music playlist

Not yet.

10. No Injuries

A big NO – Broken foot on Feb. 14.

11. No PWs

TBD… once I start racing all the distances, they may happen. (but I no longer care…)

12. No DNS or DNF races

Another fail due to #10.

Ft. Lauderdale Half Marathon – DNS
Electric City 10K – DNS
NYC Half Marathon – DNS
Helderberg 2 Hudson Half Marathon – DNS

13.  Blog 3x each week

Yes. Hooray, this still happened.

Thanks for reading and commenting!!

  1. I’ve found it hard to set goals for an entire year, because it’s hard to look that far ahead- you never know what the future holds. I’ll bet next year you won’t jinx yourself with 13 again! I would imagine now that you’re running again, your yearly mileage will get up there- especially since you’ll be TRAINING FOR A MARATHON over the summer!!! Oh, and your #10 goal wasn’t really a fail. You meant “no running injuries” and this was a walking/tripping injury.

    • Ha ha. You’re right I didn’t get hurt running. It still sucked.

Last year I set 22 goals and lucky to meet most of them. I do agree. It’s hard to plan a year ahead.

  2. If I’m reading this correctly, you were injured for 34 days… this actually isn’t bad at all.
I’m sure you will reach your revised goals, including one of 800 miles. And yes, I think the gym counts as something new!

  3. I’m doing ok when it comes to my running goals for the year. I have slacked off with practicing yoga, and every week I say I need to get back to doing that more regularly, but every week I forget. Considering your injury, you’re doing a great job with your goals for the year.

  4. We all set goals with perfect scenarios and conditions in mind. As we know, life happens and the best we can do is to keep moving forward, even if a few goals need adjusting. I once heard that a sailor sails their boat almost 90% off-course due to the wind and water…but they still reach their destination. Hang in there 😉

  5. Oh yes about that last quote. Personally I’ve never valued walking and healthy feet more than I do now when I can’t walk.
I think you’re doing well with your goals and adjusting them after your injury. And you’re back to running! That’s a wonderful thing. It’s still early in the year so 12 races good definitely be something. If you’ve been to a gym before perhaps try some new gym exercise that is a bit challenging?

    • I know. Once your feet hurt you’ll never take for granted.

I’m not planning ahead. One race at a time.

Yes. Maybe a class at the gym?
