I have a decision to make…
NAY:
1.Expensive.
Not only the race entry fee but transportation to and meals and hotels in NYC.
2.Work and Training.
I could be traveling for work which would make week day runs difficult to schedule.
3.Missing Shorter Races in the Fall.
I love to race. In our area, there are so many races in the fall (including our group race-cation.) And those long marathon training runs must be done somehow.
4.Solo Experience.
At the moment, I do not have any local running friends doing this race. Not sure how much fun it will be alone (before and after).
5.Possible Post-Race Aches/Pains.
Lower back pain? Recurrence of that awful neuroma pain?? Other pains? Will it affect future races?
YAY:
1.Guranteed Entry.
Yes, I do and I know many runners who do not and would love to run it. And I may not have the chance again.
With a 2:27 or below finish time on a NYRR race in 2022, I am guaranteed an entry.
2.NYC!!
It’s my favorite city (next to Paris). If I run another marathon, I can’t think of another one I would like to run.
3. Weather.
Your longest runs are in the fall (not summer or winter). And the race is at the beginning of November. The odds are in favor for perfect running weather.
4.Support.
Crowds everywhere.. the entire 26.2 miles for ALL runners!
5.CARPE DIEM!
Because I can. Who knows what the future will bring?
Happy Running! So what is your opinion? Will you by chance be entering the lottery or able to run this race? Please share.

Since today is Tuesday, I’m linking up with Zenaida and Kim (Kooky Runner).
with co-hosts Coach Debbie Runs, Confessions of a Mother Runner, Mile by Mile, Runs with Pugs, and Laura Norris Running.

I know people who would kill to get an entry!
Yes, you ABSOLUTELY MUST do this race! It’s just like you said: who knows what the future will bring?

I’m inclined to say go for it, but your history of back pain and possible neuromas from that much running is something to consider. I’m sure you’ll make the right decision!

Hard decision. Everything feels good now. But after all those long runs who knows?

I think you should go for it! Your guaranteed entry is a golden ticket 🙂 you’ve run it before, so you’re familiar with the course, and it’s a favorite city. Even with walk breaks, it’ll be a tough race, but you may regret letting the opportunity pass by.

I’m leaning that way.

It’s definitely a hard choice to make since so many factors go into it. I could have done NYCM a second time but decided not to and I kind of regret that decision since my marathon running days are over.

You are young enough to do another.
And yeah I may regret it if I don’t.

It is a tough one! Personally, if I was going to run a full marathon, I would choose another. It sounds like the logistics for this race are intense and a giant hassle. I would probably choose a more low key race. (Wineglass?) Can’t wait to hear what you decide to do!

Hmm. Interesting but nyc is easier to get to than Corning.

Yay! I wish I could be there to do it. It always falls on my anniversary weekend so it’s a tough one to swing. One of the people in my marriage doesn’t think running a marathon sounds like a fun way to celebrate.

My hubby was playing tennis the first time I did it.

Hm, I am not sure though I think I would. I didn’t go into the ballot for London this year (after being in October for 2 years, it’s April again and I knew I wouldn’t be able to get ready for it). I wish I’d done another mara when I was fitter and doing longer runs as I feel I’ll struggle to get back there again (I was stopped by the lockdowns really I think, as my last race was July 2019, my ultra, and by the time I was thinking what next it was early 2020 …). So I think on balance I would.

I did run in 2019 before the world ended. I thought I was one and done. Now I’m not sure

Hmmmm!!! This is a tough one. I’m sure you COULD do the training and complete the marathon if you really wanted to, and it would be an incredible experience. But you have some valid reasons for not wanting
to do it. How much would you regret not doing it? I think that’s the question. It’s true you don’t know what the future will bring and you may not get another chance. So for that reason I would say “go for it.” But I’m not the one who would do the training and risk back or foot issues, so if you decide not to, I think that’s an understandable choice. I can’t wait to hear what you decide!

I know. Tough decision.

Hmmm, I think you know you really want to do it. There are lots of closer-to-home marathons which you could easily sign up for which would be very inexpensive by comparison, but you aren’t interested in them. The NYCM has a special pull for you. Just do it!

I don’t like small races because you can end up running alone.

That’s so funny how everyone is different. I love small races. I actually enjoy being alone. It takes all the pressure off for me, other than not getting lost. Which, I have done once because it was poorly marked and it was so small. I came in 3rd place though. (Granted there were only 10 women, but whatever…)

If it’s short I don’t mind. But I need the crowds to motivate me on.

I don’t personally like big races, but lots of people do. Races that big I need someone to hold my hand. However, you asked if YOU should do it. I think
“2.NYC!!
It’s my favorite city (next to Paris). If I run another marathon, I can’t think of another one I would like to run.”
answers this. I think you will probably regret it if you don’t. Of course, I don’t know you that well, so what the hell do I know. Flip a coin?

Thanks I probably will. As you said I may regret not.

It sounds like a great opportunity! I can see how it would. be tough to get those long runs in, but there will be plenty of times to do your other local races! I think you should go for it.

I mean I already know you did (and said you would from the beginning :D), but here’s my .02. I didn’t take my second guaranteed entry. Now it was an easy decision as I was injured and 9/1 is easier for me than you guaranteeing to run under 2:27 again. Yes, it’s your normal, but we never know what’s coming. I don’t know that I’d do NYC again, but it’s always a fun carrot each February

I didn’t take my second either but it was cancelled and who knew I could defer for 3 years. And I don’t take my health for granted. 2:27 May seem doable today but in the future who knows. And so I am.

I say go for it. As you said, you don’t know if you will be able to do it again. Do it and enjoy!
