TT: Goals. Do You Set Them?


The Tuesday Topic this week is: Do you set a weekly goal? Monthly? Yearly?

As you may know, I am not really a goals person.

Last year, I thought I should have a “big hairy” goal. So I decided that I would run one half marathon each month.

Well, you know how that worked out.  Hello, Pandemic!

I don’t post weekly or monthly goals or my progress on such.

I do obviously have a lot of goals. These are yearly goals and I will access my success at the end of the year rather than weekly or monthly:

  • Run at least 3 miles twice during the week.

  • Go for a walk or hike on non-running days.

  • Run long on the weekend (10 miles if able).

  • Continue to connect safely with friends on runs, walks and hikes.

  • Go to my gym (when it opens) once a week.
  • Sign up for in-person races (once they are scheduled).

  • Do some speed work (on a track) to prepare for shorter races (once I sign up for some.)

  • Add some strength training somewhere somehow (LOL)

  • Go on a race-cation in February (if race is still scheduled).

  • Plan a race-cation for the Fall.
  • Once I start traveling again for work, run in NYC (for the sunsets and friend connections).
  • Continue to blog at least once or twice a week.

  • Run 1000 miles for the year.

  • Complete more challenging hikes.

  • Stay healthy.

I posted these goals last December.  It’s still early in the year. Maybe I will re-assess and change them at the end of June. But so far, they all seem realistic and achievable.

Maybe in 2022 or 2023, I’ll set another “big hairy” goal.

  1. Your goals will keep you healthy and active through 2021, that’s for sure!
    I can see them materializing nicely every week in your blog.

    The only two things that surprised me was strength training and track workouts… I don’t think I’ve read about it yet (or maybe I missed it?). That’s very cool that you have set these goals, too!

    • Yeah I don’t do much of either during this pandemic. I used to go to the gym once a week at least and use the machines. I don’t have any equipment at home but it closed last March. My last job was right near a track and I used go often. Now I have to drive and make the effort. But I enjoy it as a change of pace.

  2. Obviously I think goals are great. The real trick to goals, I think, is being willing to change them if they’re no longer serving you — or if life gets in the way, as it has a habit of doing.

    Oddly enough, I don’t usually set yearly goals.

    • I agree. Change is important and there’s no failure in NOT meeting your goals as long as you tried. That’s why I don’t have weekly or monthly ones. Only yearly. Much more flexibility for me. Obviously they keep me on track daily, weekly and monthly.

  3. I don’t set numeric goals very often because I know I’d obsess over the numbers and probably not enjoy the running (or whatever form of fitness involved) as a result. As you know, I also try to walk (not much for hiking options around me) on my non-running days, just to stay active. I’m so eager to get back outside with Gustavas, too!

  4. These seem like good goals for this year! I set some goals, but I haven’t been great about checking in on them. I found it really hard to really plan goals without knowing how the year would play out.

  5. Stay healthy! That’s an important one. Walking or hiking on non-running days is awesome. I have really been trying to make an effort to break up the work day with more short brisk walks with the pups. Makes a difference, physically and mentally!

    • Funny you say that. In the beginning with COVID, I made myself get fresh air everyday. Lately I have been slacking too. I may have un-stated daily and weekly goals…they lead to my yearly ones obviously.

  6. I love these goals! I need to start setting some goals like this for myself! I especially love your goal about having a race-cation! I love taking race-cations and feel like one is overdue because of covid. Thanks for sharing your goals to help motivate others!

  7. Things have been so unpredictable that I think I’m scared to set any goals! I always have weekly goals, but I think my only goal for 2021 is to read 50 books. At least I know I can control that.
    Btw I like “add in some strength training somewhere somehow” ha ha. The good news is, if you’re not doing it at all you’ll probably see really quick improvement once you start, and that’s always nice!

    • I read a lot…everyday. I never remember to write down the book titles. So I have no idea how many. That is a great goal. 50 is about one per week.

      And yes, I do nothing. So biking is something but I am hoping my gym opens before the end of the year. Even better if before I go back to work since it is near my home.
