Three Things Thursday: Running, Yoga, Eating

1. After 2 days of tennis, my heel was sore.   I didn’t run on Mon & Tues and I decided to wait until after work to run yesterday.  I parked my car at yoga and ran 4 miles around Washington Park.  Not a good run but a run nevertheless.

a nice place to run

2.  Then I went to yoga at HeartSpace.  My friend Cheryl was there as usual.  Yoga is the perfect cooldown!!!!!!!!!!

Lisa, my awesome instructor

3.  For the second week in a row, Cheryl & I went out for dinner and drinks at The Point. (She has some restaurant.com gift cards). This week, we just had drinks, salads (pictured below), shared a dessert (cinnamon donuts with strawberries & cream) & coffees.  YUM!!!!!!!!!!

didn't have this but wanted to...

Running + Yoga + Good Food = PERFECT WEDNESDAY

Today it is raining 😦   Treadmill on tap??

Happy Running! What ingredients make a perfect day for you?

TTT + 1

  1. It has rained THREE Mornings in a row!! I think I mentioned several times that I don’t run in the rain!! So my running has been slacking off 😦
  2. My hubby (MR. I never exercised in my life cuz I can play any sport well) suggested that we join a gym. There’s a new Planet Fitness nearby – only $10 amonth!
  3. My problem is that I work and it is crowded when I can go…  But I think I will join but not for the treadmill on rainy days but to crosstrain (which I should start doing).  Optimistically Tues, Thurs (after work) & Sat or Sun.

+1 So here’s my new OPTIMISTIC plan for exercise:

  • Running – before work  2-3x and 1 long on the weekend
  • Tennis – once a week after work (Mon)
  • Yoga – once a week after work (Wed)
  • Crosstrain – 2x after work (Tues, Thurs) and 1x on the weekend

Yes, there’s the hubby, friends, movies, dinners, meetings squeezed in there too…If only I didn’t have to work…There’d be time for everything!!

Happy Running! Do you belong to a gym?  How often do you go?

TTT: My Weekend, My Injury & My Weight

  1. 6 weekends in a row, it has been sunny and we have gone boating on Lake George.

    enjoying my first lake swim

Am I greedy to want another sunny weekend?  I have a 3-day weekend.   The weekend forecast doesn’t look good 😦

This weekend is also our annual tennis  gathering on Schroon River.

2.  Today is my next to last PT appointment.  It’s with my favorite PT guy #1.  Since I last went to PT on Monday, I have:

  • run 2.5 miles plus .5 mile walk on Tues
  • played 1 hour of tennis (doubles) on Tues
  • 1.5 hours of yoga on Wed
  • walked 1 mile at lunch today

It seems to be getting better but not fast enough for me!  I hope to run again tomorrow and gradually increase over the weekend…(if I have no pain!)

3.    I am FAT!!   No, not obese… but since I have not been running or playing tennis, I have gained weight!!!! I say it’s the lack of physical activity.  But it could be the frequency of rootbeer floats I have consumed this summer.

I have always been very thin.  Underweight as a kid.  I have never had to diet.  I don’t even know how.  I love my carbs & desserts!!! It’s never been a problem but I think it’s also an age thing!!!

me in college many moons ago

As you get older, your metabolism slows down!!!!  If you eat the same way as you did 10 or 20 or 30 years ago, you will gain weight and even if you don’t gain lbs, you gain inches…in all the wrong places.

Mine is in my waist, stomach & butt… I haven’t gained a huge amount of weight …maybe 8 lbs but it’s a lot for me!!!!!

I HATE IT!!!!!

recently - the dress covers it all!

So what’s the plan?  Of course, run and play tennis.  Continue yoga, walk at lunch…switch from chocolate poptarts to vanilla (90 calories less), cut out the ice cream (well, most of it), drink more water, eat more salads…

Happy Running! Any diet tips for the “old” lady?

Activities to fill up my non-running time

READING:

” a stunning debut novel about four people and the cataclysmic intersection of their lives. Michael is a rising OB/GYN at a prominent private practice in Albany, New York; he also moonlights at a local womens health clinic…”

It was very suspenseful and I recognized all the streets mentioned.

WATCHING WTT TENNIS LIVE:

Bryan Brothers

Martina Hingis

Both were playing in Albany as well as Serena Williams.

ATTENDING A PLAY:

This was held outdoors in Williamstown, MA and my BF’s daughter was in it. (And AJH, they sold home-made Woopie pies – yum!)  I also plan to go to see The Producers which is being held outdoors in Washington Park, Albany.

 YOGA:

I continue to go to HeartSpace in Albany on Wednesdays.

PLAYING MAH JONG:

Every Friday nite, I play with 4-12 women.  6 tennis players & 1 runner play in our group but I try to concentrate on the game.

Happy Running! What non-running activities do you enjoy?

Happy National Running Day

Actually, I RUN because it feels great when I’m done!

And it did today….I squeezed  in 3 miles before work and 2 miles before yoga & after work.

In honor of National Running Day, let’s talk “running.” (questions borrowed from Sweat Once a Day)

1. What is your favorite distance to run?

For me, it’s definitely the 5K and I have run about 50 in 3 years!! There are so many of them to choose from. They’re easy to train for.  They don’t take a lot of time to run.

Mother's Day 5k Race '11

2. What is the best race you ever did?

I would have to say that it was the Naples Daily News Half Marathon.  The weather and the scenery were awesome and it was my lst half which I never thought I could do. I also like running in the Freihofer’s Run for Women.  It’s a BIG local race and I always envied women that ran it and now I can!

3. What is your favorite running attire?

My clothes have to be color coordinated (and if possible, the same brand).  That’s very important.  I like running skirts (and need to get more.)

4. What is your favorite running gear?

I can’t believe I ran for so long without one. It’s my Garmin!!  I got it for my first half marathon.

5. Biggest Running Accomplishment Ever?

That’s easy – finishing my first half marathon and finishing my 2nd (rainy, cold) half marathon.

6. Favorite thing to eat after a run?

I have a big sweet tooth.  Donuts or cupcakes or ice cream!!

Happy Running!  Did you run today?

Sunday, My Day of Rest

Yesterday, I ran a 4 mile race and then 6 more miles, watched a tennis match, went grocery shopping, did laundry and went out to dinner.

I deserve a day to just relax.

So today I got up at 6:30 am (which was really 5:30am) and played tennis for an hour and a 1/2 with 3 guys.  My hubby has a tennis match today and he begged me to sub for him.  I thought I would be intimidated but the guys were nice and I had fun.

I went home & changed and then went to Paneras to have brunch with Mary, my running friend.  I haven’t seen her since Nov.  She has had a pulled calf muscle, hip problem, and now a stress fracture in her leg.  She is so depressed but vows to run the half with me in Lake George on Apr 23.

After I got home, my mah jongg friend called to remind me that I promised to go to a new intro yoga class with her. So I changed my clothes again.  The yoga class was just OK.  Too much emphasis on breathing and not enough stretching.  I’m going back to my Wed nite class.

I went home and changed my clothes for the 4th time to go watch my hubby’s tennis match.  He won in a 3rd set tie breaker.  YAY!! (He’s not a good loser!)

I can’t wait to go to work tomorrow.  This rest is exhausting!!

Happy Running!

Three Things Thursday

  1. I hate the cold.
  2. I hate the ice.
  3. I hate the wind.

Now that that’s clear.  I need to decide if I am running the half on Apr 23, sign up and increase my weekly mileage.

Monday, I didn’t feel like getting up early but played tennis after work. No miles!
Tuesday, I ran 3 miles outside before work dancing over the ice patches and played tennis after work.
Wednesday, I didn’t feel like getting up early but planned to run after work.

BUT I couldn’t move forward, the wind was so strong.  I went to yoga instead. No miles!

The yoga class was GREAT!! I felt so good afterwards but when I back out to my car (parked by the curb on a 4 lane street), someone had knocked the side mirror off my car!!!! My hubby took it for an estimate – almost $600 to fix.  Ouch!

Today when I got up, it was -4 with the wind chill and there was a light coating of snow on the ground.  Off to the gym I went to run 4 miles on the treadmill.

To make matters worse, they predict rain for  the weekend (My long run of 9 miles is scheduled!!) I think I’d rather be cold than wet for hours 😦  HELP!!

Happy Running!

Hakuna Matata

“It means no worries
For the rest of your days
It’s our problem-free philosophy”

Wouldn’t that be nice??

My worry-free week:

Monday & Tuesday I worked for Examsoft providing tech support to those students taking the NYS Bar exam on their laptops. That meant getting up at 5:30 am (even on my day off) and sitting all day.  No worries since I was NOT taking the bar exam!!

Tuesday after work, I rushed to my tennis contract.  4 of us have a clinic for an hour and then play doubles.  Again no worries, the tennis was just for fun!

Wednesday morning, it was 0 degrees outside.  No worry – I headed to the gym to run on the treadmill and I got to watch Fairly Legal on my iPod Touch.

After work Wedsnesday, I went to Beginning Yoga with 2 friends.  Although no one seemed to be beginners, it was more relaxing than Runners Yoga.

After yoga,  we went out for coffee and dessert – even more enjoyable than the yoga!

Tonight I am going to see The Lion King with some friends.  I had always wanted to see it on Broadway and can’t wait!!

First we’re going out to dinner to Cornell’s  – it’s famous for Italian cuisine – MMMM! And I’m not worried because I’ll run it off tomorrow morning!

Happy Running! Hakuna Matata!!!

Chinese New Year and Yoga

Yesterday the Chinese New Year began and 2011 is the Year of the Rabbit. Happy New Year!

Rabbits run, right?  Rabbits are fast.

This should be a great year for us runners!

My Yoga for Runners class last night was interesting.  Everyone there was young and as flexible as pretzels. Then there was me.    I am very very very tight!  So I think this will help me. It can’t hurt. I plan to go again next week.

Below are some videos I found:
