This week, the topic is FREE so I am appropriately choosing:

What To Do If You Get Sick During Half Marathon Training

I have run 23 half marathons.  And it’s inevitable that I would get sick during a training cycle.

I mean, your body is working hard and using resources for your workouts and recovery, some of which would normally be used to bolster your immune system. As a result, your immune system is weaker than usual.

Plus, in my job, I come in contact with a lot of people.

And yes, this time, the bug hit me.

Did I panic?  Of course.

But it’s not the end of the world.   Here’s some advice:

1.Don’t Run. Rest.

The general rule of thumb says you can start running again if you don’t have a fever or a cough.  Some experts say you’re OK to run if your symptoms are from the neck up. If your symptoms are from the neck down, then rest until they’re gone.

But the most important factor to base your decision on is simply how you feel. If your body feels dead, then it’s telling you it’s not ready for training.

I bought some Skirt Sports clothes and then registered for 3 races while I was NOT running.

2.  Don’t let getting sidelined by illness destroy your confidence.

havent-run-in-two-days
A couple of days off should not hurt your training.

It takes an extended period of time for you to see a drop in your fitness level, usually two to three weeks.

3. Adjust your training intensity when you return to running.

Any longer than a few days missed, you should make adjustments.

They recommend trying about a 20 percent reduction initially.  So rather than a 30 mile week, try a 24 mile week. This may mean a 10 mile long run would be only a 8 mile run.

But remember, this is an individual thing just like running and training.  Illness affects everyone differently.

4. Listen to your body and be as active as you can handle.

Don’t do anything intense or very long. The best exercise to fit your needs when you’re sick is walking.

A 30-minute walk on days when you’re not able to run should be enough. The main reason walking works as an activity to do when you can’t train is that you are continuing to use your legs.

5. Accept that you might not perform at the level you were hoping, and move on. There will be more races to PR in in the future.

Run to have fun.  Adjust your goals. Rejoice in the fact that you crossed the finish line rather the time that you crossed it.

So I hope you all stay healthy and do not need any of the tips above!!

I am SICK of this cold weather…

Literally and figuratively…

Which one was more enjoyable?

I was accepting of the cold.  I was running in it. If it weren’t windy and icy, I was doing okay.

Then I went to Florida. I got spoiled for a short time.

Now I am dreading putting on the extra layers.

Plus I came down with a COLD!!  Do you know how hard it is to run when you are sneezing and wiping a runny nose??

I didn’t run on Monday because I was tired and I had run 4 days in a row.  I didn’t run Tuesday cuz I was playing tennis and then Wednesday, the dreaded cold arrived.

I felt like bailing but instead I googled “running with a cold” and this is what I found out:

Follow the general rule of thumb that if all your symptoms are above your neck (sniffles, sore throat, minor cough) you’re okay to exercise. “Exercise neither helps nor hurts the symptoms of a moderate cold,” says Nieman. “Don’t do anything too severe, and it should be okay.” But know your limits. Over-exertion can make symptoms last longer, he warns.

So I cut my run from 5 miles to 3 miles.  And I didn’t feel any worse.

Hopefully, my cold will go away by the weekend when we turn our clocks ahead.

Maybe  the weather will warm up sooooon!!!

Happy Running!  Are you as sick of winter as I am?

Hardest Long Run Ever

longrun

Because my weekend was so busy, I took today off from work to get in my last long run.

Little did I know that I would be SICK!!

I got little sleep last night – headache, sore throat, congested… the cold medicine did zilch!

So I woke up feeling like I got hit by a freight train.  I really wanted to stay in bed not run.

What would any runner do…

Get out of bed and get ready to run.

The weather was the motivator – it was warm and sunny!  I was hoping it would make me feel better.

I decided to go to the Nisky Bike Path – it’s flat and scenic, there are restrooms, bikers & runners… a great place to do a long run.

I had some water and a gel and set out for 4 miles and then looped back to my car for more water.  I did bring a gel with me (and lots of tissues.)

It was warmer than I thought and I felt worse that I thought. So I just trudged along…running…walking…running.

I really wished I had brought water.     The good news is that nothing hurt.  I just had no energy…my back ached..my legs ached…worse than any half marathon I ever have run.

After 8 miles, I refueled at my car and then headed 2 miles in the other direction and then turned around.

I got the 12 miles done!  I didn’t die!  My time was slower than most of my halfs.

I’m not going to get too depressed.  I attribute my disastrous performance to the heat, not enough hydration, most of all my cold.

yes, please

If I could drag myself through 12 miles today, I guess I can drag myself through 1.1 more! (Hopefully it won’t feel this bad in 2 weeks!!)

Happy Running!  Have you ever experienced a terrible long training run?
