Weekly Run Down for 4.21.24-4.28.24: Searching for Speed

It seems like I’m always training for a half marathon. Feb, Mar, Apr, May…

Well, my next two (maybe three) races are shorter distances.

Will I be able to adapt and pick up a little speed?

Last Week –

  • Sunday – For the past 10 weeks, My friend Heidi and I had been mentoring a group of STEM runners.  Today was their goal race.

Since I had run 10 miles the day before, I was hoping to be paired up with someone who wanted to walk or run/walk slowly.

And a lady who only walks her 5ks wanted someone to walk with her.  Of course, I was thrilled.

We chatted about all kinds of things and she got a PR.

It was so rewarding to be part of this group and I can’t wait to do it again.

(other pics from the race are posted HERE.)

The downside was that it was very COLD!!! So Heidi and I had to warm up with a delicious brunch.

  • Monday – A day off from work. I met up with my running friend Sherry to log a few miles at the Crossings, followed by a side trip for coffee and to TJs.

the sunshine was nice but still chilly with the wind

I spent most of the afternoon doing yardwork!! (It was more exhausting than the 4 mile run).

  • Tuesday – A quick trip (finally) to the gym.

Back to the office for the day and a walk with friends afterward.

  • Wednesday – WFH and mentoring with the TC after work.

It rained in the morning and on and off all day (as it always seems to on Wednesday) but it stopped…

Week 6 so 10 min of straight running twice… I always hang back with the slowest runner

the wind made it feel so much colder

  • Thursday – Back to live teaching…

A run after at UAlbany  and then a meet-up at the mall for a walk with my BFF.

  • Friday – Same work schedule as Thursday but a quick visit with my granddaughter after work.

And after several missed weeks, I hosted mah jongg at my house.

  • Saturday – Bacon Hill Bonanza 10K. I have run the 5k many times but I decided to challenge myself on the hills of the 10k.

I was happy that one of my running friends offered to sign up too. She chose the 5k and we drove up together.

It was chilly when we arrived but the sun was shining so it seemed like a perfect day for racing… except for that wind!!

However, as I expected I struggled on those 6.2 hilly miles.

And the answer to question above is NO, not yet!! But we had fun and even won my age group (Sometimes you just have to show up.)

It was supposed to be a Long Run Saturday so I am still contemplating how to get those extra 5-6 miles done?  Later? Tomorrow? (Or can 6.2 hilly miles=11 flat miles?)

  • Sunday –  It will be a gym visit… maybe a hike or yard work and even start packing for my Florida vacation.

This Coming Week on the Run –

  • Monday –  run
  • Tuesday – GYM, hair appt.
  • Wednesday – run, TC mentoring
  • Thursday – flight to Fla.
  • Friday – run, tennis
  • Saturday run, tennis
  • Sunday –  run, tennis, theater tix

This Coming Week on the Blog –

  • Tuesday – Bacon Hill Bonanza 10k Race Recap
  • Friday –  Ultimate Coffee Date

Happy Running! Training for any big or small races this winter?  How’s the weather where you live? Are the flowers blooming? Do you prefer long distance races or short? Please share.

  1. Nice job on the AG win- yes, showing up is important! And I think a hilly 10k could count as a long run. Why not?

So this week is your Naples trip? You should have some beautiful weather! And… love the photo of Heather. Such a cutie.

  2. It’s such a paradox how every race has tough elements to battle. The short races have the pressure to run fast & hard, where the longer ones have all the on-course fueling to keep one’s endurance on-point. Then there’s the wild card of weather, as well as the terrain. But we keep pinning on the race bibs…

  3. I love all the flower pics! I’m sorry it’s still so cold. Here it’s mixed but slowly getting consistently warmer and it is very spring-like. Congrats to your hilly 10k and winning your age group!

  4. It looks like spring is slowly finding its way to you. It’s supposed to get up to 90° here today, 17° higher than our average high for this day.

I’m not training for any running races, but I’ve got that bike race coming up in less than 2 weeks. Eek! Back in the day, I loved running marathons so much and rarely ran a shorter race.

    Have a great week!

    • It’s warming up here too. Not that warm yet.

      Good luck in your race.

Same here about half marathons. We will have to see if I can manage both.

  5. Your granddaughter is just the cutest!

I’m so glad you had a great experience with your group! I love to hear that!

I am a distance runner, through and through. My confidence is shaken, but it’s returning, and I am really getting myself in the head space for 10+ miles.

It’s getting hot again. Not a fan of that, but hopefully the summer will be short.

  6. Hooray for your 5kers! Ours are nicely integrated into our club run although I’m still supporting the ones who are not quite up to our official tail runner pace. That’s their Beyond of their 5k and Beyond (4 mi) and about eight of them are coming regularly!

I have a half myself on Sunday! Shocking, I know!
