If I hadn’t gotten injured, I would have already run a half marathon on Feb. 18 and I’d be tapering for the NYC Half Marathon in 2 weeks.
But I’m still playing catch up especially since I skipped my long run while on vacation in Florida.
Although is it still called “training” if you just want to finish the race?
Last Week –
- Sunday – Another frigid morning. I started the day with a visit to the gym.

haven’t posted a gym selfie in a while… just wanted to show you how empty it was (most people were on treadmills or the track)
After some errands, I went to a Chinese restaurant to celebrate the birthday of two friends (in the umbrella hats.)
- Monday – Although my STEM mentoring (training victims of DV for a 5K in April) started last Monday, I was away so this was my first meet-up.
I knew that it would be the 2nd week of Couch-to-5k and mostly walking so I got in a few miles in the ‘hood during lunch.
I was correct in that most of the 2 miles were walking.
- Tuesday – A busy work day but I went for an unplanned run after work since the forecast was for rain the next day.
In the evening, there was a ZOOM meeting for those who would be mentoring in the Freihofer Training Challenge (FTC) this spring.
We got the news that the race will have a new name (No longer “Freihofers.”)… but there will still be cookies!!
- Wednesday – An early morning visit to the gym. It was a dreary rainy day and so I didn’t miss my outdoor run.
I did go to the office and had to stop on the way to …
and then after work, I visited my granddaughter.
The wind in the evening/night was insane… so glad that we didn’t lose power.
- Thursday – I briefly contemplated running before work.
So I waited until lunch and …
I finally dragged myself out to the rail trail after work… and I couldn’t believe how cold I was!!
- Friday – Just a morning visit to the gym and mah jongg in the evening.
- Saturday – FOMO on a race I would have liked to have run…
but it was Long Run and brunch day… 12 miles on the plan and rain in the forecast.
We made the decision to run no matter what… and it never rained until we were done and at brunch!!
- Sunday – It will be a gym visit… maybe a hike since the temps look to be rising.
This Coming Week on the Run –
- Monday – Day Off so hopefully a hike or a run, STEM mentoring
- Tuesday – GYM
- Wednesday – run (lunch)
- Thursday – run (after work)
- Friday – GYM, mah jongg
- Saturday – Long Run (10 mi.)
- Sunday – GYM
This Coming Week on the Blog –
- Tuesday – Staying Motivated
- Friday – 2024 NYC Marathon?

I think most people train for a race no matter what their finish goals! Especially a long distance race. Unless you are my son, of course, lol
You got this Darlene!

Yes, I remember, oh to be young again.
I agree… I need to get the miles in so I don’t get injured for the next one. But I would have preferred to run the 10k race.

I say I am always training-training for life and all that comes along with it! You will be great Darlene you have been training for decades

I like the way you think.
I won’t be great but that’s ok as long as it doesn’t hurt.

Sounds like you got in a little bit of everything this week!
I would call it training if I was ramping up for the distance, regardless of pace goals.
Your grandbaby is so cute!

Ok then, I’m training to finish the race.

Sometimes when we’re coming back from a race we have to throw out the precise planning and just do what we can. You’ve got this!
I always love seeing the granddaughter pictures! She’s a cutie!

Thanks… she is adorable IMO
I think I gave up on precise planning long ago LOL

The weather last week was so weird. Tuesday evening (sounds like you got it Wednesday night) the wind was simply insane. It sounded like a tornado outside. Your body knows what its doing, so “training” or not, you’ll get it done 😉

Thanks for your vote of confidence. I’ll need it.

Some people run races all the time without tapering- as long as you’re not shooting for a PR (which I have a sneaking suspicion you’re not) I think you’re fine to just train up until the race. I like Kim’s comment- your body knows what it’s doing.
Heather is so cute!!! Hee hee, those chubby cheeks.
I like that STEM mentoring program- it must feel really satisfying. I want to hear how these women end up doing in the race!

Definitely over thinking PR.
I hope my body knows what it’s doing. Sometimes I’m not so sure.

The birthday lunch looks fun, and your granddaughter is such a cutie! Our Thursday was freezing as well and I chose to run on the treadmill.

That might have been a better option.

Are you ever actually not training for a race? haha! Your consistency keeps you very race ready I think (even with the time off for vacation).
I tried something new at Starbucks this week – a chocolate hazelnut cookie cold brew. It was interesting!

I like to think I’m race ready. But who knows until race day?
Yes. I tried it too.

OMG, your granddaughter is soooo cute! Look at that sweet face!
I think you’re at a point where your body will just do what it does. You are always running and being active, so I don’t think the taper is super critical anymore.
We had a storm that woke me out of dead sleep last night. The whole house was shaking from wind and thunder. Scary.

We will see. Hopefully the weather will be nice and I’ll just enjoy my accomplishment.

Your granddaughter looks so bright and alert, taking everything in! I’m getting to the end of our couch to 5k and beyond training programme with running club, I’ve led a lot of the sessions and love it as always. I particularly like that we don’t expect people to be able to do 5k in 30 minutes at the end of it!

Glad you are enjoying it… I don’t like it because it stresses out the slower runners who feel that have to run for 8 min, 20 min, 30 min… our group makes them feel that at the end, they can run a 5k… not true! They should feel comfortable walking if they need to. End of rant.

Yes indeed. They’ve got to the 30 minute continuous run now and felt OK with it but once they’re on a distance then they will get to do whatever they want to get that distance on my shifts!

It depends on the mojo of the runners… it works ok with some and not at all with others so we just have be flexible.
