Last Sunday, I spectated at the NYC Half Marathon on a very cold, windy day.
I had to return to NYC for work Tuesday (and stayed there until Friday night).
And again this week, on Tuesday, I’m heading back and I will be there working until Friday night.
But my biggest news is that I ran…. after 34 days of NO Running!
Last Week:
- Monday – I finally had my 2nd Ortho appt. They took an x-ray of my foot and the doctor was very pleased. All Healed. No restrictions he said… just don’t twist your foot and fall again.

it was interesting to see the hardware from my ankle surgery
What a relief and I couldn’t wait to celebrate with a run. I drove to UAlbany and cautiously ran/walked about 2 miles.
- Tuesday – I took an early train to NYC, checked into my hotel and hopped a subway to Jamaica to set up for my class the next day. When I got back to my hotel, I changed into running clothes and headed to Central Park.
Again I was cautious and ran slow with lots of walk breaks and then I met Cari and Elizabeth for a sushi dinner.

- Wednesday – An early subway ride to Jamaica, taught all day, and then took the subway back to my hotel. Not wanting to overdo the running thing, I took the subway to the Harlem Meer part of Central Park and just walked around.

- Thursday – My day was similar to Wednesday except that since the forecast was for rain, I has gotten a ticket for a Broadway show. Before the show, I had time to run/walk around Hudson Yards.

that’s my 2018 Brooklyn half shirt… getting psyched for May.
- Friday – My last day this week teaching in Jamaica and finally a train home.
- Saturday – Long Run Day so finally I was able to run with friends before brunch. And we got it done before our wintry mix.

we saw an eagle and my foot felt GREAT after 4 miles.
After I had my rescheduled hair appointment.
- Sunday – Planned is some errands and some hiking…
This Coming Week on the Run–
- Monday – run, Freihofer Training Challenge
- Tuesday-Friday – working in Jamaica, Queens again
As time allows, walks, meet-up with friends and hopefully, some runs after work.
- Saturday – Run and Brunch with running friends
This Coming Week on the Blog –
- Tuesday – NYC Half Marathon Race Recap – the Spectator Version
- Friday – Runfessions

I know it felt like forever, but 34 days without running isn’t too bad! I’m sure you’ll be back to your normal mileage very quickly!

I’m trying to take it slow.

So far so good. I think it helped that I was able to walk and bike rather than just sitting around.

I’m so glad you got clearance to resume running. Very smart to take things slow and cautiously, though I know how tough it is. Happy running!

It’s hard because you want to jump back in but I don’t want any pain…

This is great news!!! Was it really five weeks ago??? The time went fast (for me, not for you I’ll bet.) Sounds like you’re easing in gradually, which is perfect. I love how you’re already psyched for a race in May. Even a broken foot couldn’t keep you down for long.

It’s amazing how fast your fitness leaves… it’s slow but I’m trying to be grateful that it is healed and I can run (at any pace.)

I was lucky… it was healed in 4 weeks… but I waited for the x-ray to confirm… it felt amazing to run… slow but still a run When you are sidelined, I think you appreciate it more.

Glad you are back to running.
That is apparently the same Eagle I saw — I looked for a nest, but didn’t see one, but it looks like it didn’t move from Wednesday til Saturday, LOL!

Could be. We saw a wounded muskrat too. Attacked by some animal.

Thankfully I didn’t see that.

Speedy compared to what I was expecting but still felt endless.

Well done! And you’ve had less time off than I have had to have with my messed-up posterior chain!

I know. I can’t remember the last time I was there. The conservancy gardens are under construction though.
Yes, it was great to catch up. See you again soon.

Me too. It’s so frustrating to not be able to run. You lose your fitness quickly. But mentally it is even more tough than fitness.

How was Parade? I haven’t seen that one.
I am so happy you are healed. I know that it sucked to miss the half, but you are back on the path!
And yay for soft-serve!

34 days! so happy you’re back at it and have the all-clear. I recognize that hardware in your x-ray 🙂 I have the same. I had heard that some people end up having theirs removed, but it looks like we both still have ours!

I also have 2 long screws on the inside… I’m keeping mine… my ankle is not as flexible as it could be but the hardware doesn’t hurt.

Whoop! Whoop! BEST UPDATE EVER! So happy you’re back running – I laughed at one of your comments that it felt like five months, not five weeks! But for someone who runs like you do, I cannot even imagine the patience it took to get to this point.
So glad your work has meant more time in New York City which I know you love plus meetups with Cari!

Yes. Great to be back running and seeing Cari.

What, 34 days? That’s so great you are back to running! It doesn’t seem that long to me, but I’m sure it dragged on for you. So odd to see the hardware in your x-ray! Keep those ankles strong and enjoy your running! 🙂
