This week, the topic is: Running Fuel.
So what would someone who doesn’t cook much and whose post-run fuel is usually ice cream write about??
I am going to share what I use for energy before or during my runs:
It works for me so why switch? They don’t upset my stomach and they are easy to carry on a run.
My favorite flavors are:
- with caffeine – Salted Caramel, Caramel Macchiato, Chocolate Outrage
- without caffeine – Root Bear, Peanut Butter
Here are some new flavors that I haven’t tried:
2. Nature’s Bakery Fig Bars
They come in loads of flavors but I usually eat the plain fig or the blueberry.
They are made with 0g of trans fat, all natural, whole wheat, and are Non GMO, Kosher, and cholesterol-free. Some flavors are even gluten-free.
I love to eat them and they are a good source of potassium which is said to help prevent muscle cramping. Plus they come in their own wrapper. LOL.
4. Starbucks Chocolate Banana Smoothie
I am sure it must be heathier than a Latte or a Frappuccino, right? (This is obviously a pre or post run treat.)
It contains: A nourishing blend of mocha flavored sauce, a whole banana, milk, whey protein and fiber powder, and ice.
5. Larabar Bites
Are they healthy? Not sure but they do taste good. Here’s what their website says:
All 4 indulgent flavors are made from just 5-6 simple ingredients and are gluten free, non-GMO, vegan, and dairy free.
Happy Running! What do you eat for running fuel?
Most likely the larabar bites are healthier than the starbucks smoothie — haven’t researched it so I don’t really know but many of Starbucks’ creations are loaded with sugar. Larbars have plenty of sugar, too, but generally from more natural sources.
I like variety, and that’s why I’m always trying new things. You never know unless you try!
True. I don’t have the time to bake. Also many of the store bought fuel items are pricey.

Does Gu have an ambassador program? 😉
I have no idea.

I just can’t get past the texture of the GU wish I could. I do like the shot blocks
Many runners say that.
Those fig bars sound delicious, I’ve never tried them before! I’m not a huge fan of bananas but I’ve been trying to eat them more. I like them best in smoothie format 🙂
I eat bananas because they are good for you and easy to grab.
As a Hoka wearer, I feel it’s my destiny to try the toasted marshmallow Gu! I’ll have to go look for it, although I won’t be needing it for a while as we are still in the throes of hellish hot weather and long runs aren’t that long. But someday, right?!
I love those Larabar bites.
I’m looking for the new flavors to try!!
I love the Fig Bars! I have used them as a snack during the workday you’re right, they would work well for fuel too!
I almost always eat a banana before my runs – during my run, I really like the Huma gel with chia seeds!
I’ve tried the Huma gels. I’m not a fan of the consistency (the chia seeds.)
I have bought those lara bites before as well. I feel like I am getting more of a snack when I get to have a few pieces of something rather than eating one bar.
I’m kind of getting away from Gu (and going with Honey Stinger gels most of the time), but Gu does have pretty decent flavors! I tried the root beer once, and it was awesome!
I like the root beer. Looking forward to trying the new flavors
I just found those Larabar bites and yum! I’ve been snacking on them at work.
Tempting aren’t they?
I tried to buy Fig Newtons for fuel, but my husband ate them all as snacks!
