Erika @ MCM Mama Runs hosts Tuesdays on the Run with Marcia @ Marcia’s Healthy Slice and Patty @ My no-guilt life!
This week’s topic is Tips for Night Races
I am definitely not an expert since I only run one night race a year…

Albany’s Last Run
- Wear bright colors

at least I wore a white hat & shoes & lights around my neck
- Carry a flashlight or wear a headlamp if there aren’t lights
This shouldn’t be a problem because most races should be on roads that are well lit.
- Be prepared for a slower finish time
You have to look out for cracks, potholes and things in the road that you can’t see when it is dark. No doubt, this will make you run slower. I didn’t one year and I fell.
- Shift your meals.
You don’t want to run on a full stomach (dinner) and you don’t want to run on an empty stomach. I usually eat my breakfast 2 hours before the race.
Happy Running! Do you run night races? Any other tips?

At least for Last Run I don’t worry much about being visible. Or Vegas, for that fact. 🙂

Gosh, I didn’t think about running slower because you can’t see as well. That’s awful that you fell during a race, hope you weren’t hurt too badly!

Totally hear you on having to look out more for cracks and other things on the course during a night race.
My 5K PR time is actually from an evening race; it wasn’t dark but I didn’t know I had that in me at that time of day, haha.

I am easily a minute per mile faster after 4 p.m. and I don’t feel like I’m struggling. Maybe I need to find a night 5k to PR!!! Nice job!

That’s funny. I am faster in the am.

Running at night is not my thing. I have a very hard time with depth perception at night….

I would love to do a race that includes Christmas lights. Oh wait, I did do one in WDW, the Wine and DIne race and you run through Hollywood Studios and see the lights. My biggest tip for night races is if you are running with a friend, have a planned meeting spot. Our first Wine and DIne, Christine and I got separated and missed running together for about 8 miles of the half marathon.
