Book Review and a Giveaway

I was recently contacted by the author of The Ultimate Beginner’s Running Guide to review his book.

I have lots of time (not running) so I gladly agreed.

It wasn’t that long ago that I started running and in many ways, I still considered myself a “beginning” runner. I was lucky to be able to join a running group (No Boundaries) and have a mentor plus lots of support.  But I wish I had read a book like this one.

It covers everything related to running, such as preventing injuries, what to eat, how to dress, how to pace yourself, how to advance in speed, distance or both, the older runner, and running at different stages of your life.  I also like the way it summarizes each topic.

Even if you are not a beginning runner, it is a good refresher and it may help you correct things that you are doing wrong (such as your stride).

My only critique is the lack of pictures (I am a visual learner.) and that it doesn’t address different training based on distance (5k vs half marathon).

But even if you don’t win this giveaway, it’s a good deal for $2.99 from Amazon.

The author was nice enough to let me giveaway 3 digital copies of his book.

Winning…

I haven’t entered a blog giveaway in a long time but I thought Molly’s at I’m a Sleeper Baker was worthwhile.  She will be running the NYC Marathon and is raising money for the Children’s Tumor Foundation. What a great cause!

So I donated and I won!!!!!!!!!!!

I get to pick 2 from this list:

  • cheeta print skirt trimmed with aqua, in size 2 (fits a size 4/6) , from Running Skirts! – Love this skirt but not sure if it would be too small….but if I lose weight…
  • FromTommie Copper, a pair copper infused compression sleeves to address a natural solution for pain – probably need these but have my running skirt heart compression socks
  • One large runner girl charm necklace from Lift Your Sole – already have this but know a few runners who I could give it to
  • An Ultra Pocket Hat from Gone For A Run – not sure I want to put things in my cap but maybe I could try..
  • A GU Performance Energy sampler, along with a Gel Bot. – love GU but currently not running long but hope to be sometime soon…
  • Two pairs of Wrightsocks, one set in size large, one set in size medium – love socks!! but I wear a small but could give these to someone else..
  • Two Fitness Towels from Inperspire – these have very cool sayings…
  • A Sweaty Band – heard these are great

So difficult to choose!!!!!!!

Yak Trax Review and Giveaway

It hasn’t been the snowiest winter on record but it has been the snowiest of my running career. (I’ve been running for 3 years but this is the first winter I’ve attempted to run outdoors.)

This is what the website says about Yak Trax Pro:

Features:

  • Easy On/Off
  • Walk Naturally
  • Spikeless/Ultralight
  • Helps reduce the Risk of Falls & Injuries

Yaktrax have a unique, spikeless, patented coil design, unlike other products on the market.

The Yaktrax Pro will instantly give you better traction, confidence and safety on packed snow or ice. Move about naturally with the same solid grip that you are accustomerd to on dry surfaces. Walk or run as you normally would and experience stability on ice and snow like you have never felt before.

Made with high strength, abrasion resistant 1.4mm steel coils and heavy duty natural rubber material, the Yaktrax Pro easily conforms to the shape of your boot or shoe. With its patented SkidLock coil design, the Yaktrax Pro provides 360 degrees of traction on packed snow and ice and can be worn in temperatures as low as -41° Fahrenheit.

We’ve recently had a lot of ice and snow where I live. The streets are clear but behind my house is the “water line” which is a trail for walking. running & snowmobiling.  Perfect for testing the Yak Trax!!

I had a little difficulty getting them on but if I read the directions, I wouldn’t have.

I expected them to feel clunky but they didn’t at all.  I quickly ran just as normally as without them. The best part was that I was able to run through the snow, slush and ice and I didn’t slip and fall!!!

So if you hate the treadmill but are afraid to run on the slippery roads, Yak Trax are for you!!!

Spring should be here soon!! But I will be using Yak Trax Pros next winter.

Note: I was sent these  free of charge to review. However, the opinion is solely mine.

To win  a pair of Yak Trax Pro (S), here’s what to do:

Wednesday Winning & Buying

Look what I won from Running to Health! The BondiBand will be perfect to wear during my 2 Dec races next year. The Sports Beans are something I’ve wanted to try during my long runs. Thanks Stephanie.

I returned the Garmin Forerunner 110 that my husband bought me for Christmas.  It was $265 at Dick’s and it wasn’t what I wanted.  I bought the Garmin Forerunner 205 from Walmart.com for $114.

Unlike AJH, I do not like the cold or running in the snow. So yesterday I went to the gym and ran 4 slow miles on the treadmill.  It was nice not to have to rush out before work. It was 10am before I got going!! I watched The Good Wife on my iPod. I decided to rent episodes from the lst season of Glee to watch next.  I feel out of the loop not having ever watched the show.

Today, it is warmer and I hope the sidewalks are shoveled because I’m heading outside…

Happy Running!  I can’t wait to try my Garmin!!!!

My First Giveaway Winner & My Unscheduled Running

and the winner is….

Bikini Mommy – Congratulations!! E-mail me (dsc59@nycap.rr.com) your address so I can mail your items to you.

As I mentioned yesterday, I am on vacation til Jan 3, 2011!  I can leisurely RUN whenever and wherever I want! No schedules!!

What the forecast for today doesn’t show is: Wind: NW 20-30 MPH but I am planning to run 4-5 miles outdoors in Delmar today, 3-4 miles in Albany tomorrow, rest on Christmas Day and do my long run (9-11 miles) in Albany on Sunday —at whatever time I feel like it

Happy Running!

Racing Advice

Lesley from Racing It Off was recently a featured runner on Run, Courtney, Run’s blog.  This piece of advice will hopefully help me complete my first half marathon.

She was asked: What is the best piece of running advice you ever received?

She responded: If you don’t think you can go that far, then slow down.  With many of my friends that start, it seems they are sometimes afraid of being too slow.  Being able to maintain a 13 or 14 min/mile for 3 miles is way more satisfying ultimately than only being able to get through ½ mile at 11 or 12 min/mile..

So today when I was running on the dreaded treadmill, every time, I wanted to quit, I just slowed it down for a while and then sped up and continued.  So it took me 50 minutes to run 4 miles…better than only 2 miles at a faster pace.

Now I know that during a 5k race, this won’t happen.  I am too competitive.  But during my first Half Marathon, a distance that I don’t know if I can complete, I will run SLOW and walk OFTEN.  My pace won’t matter.  I WANT TO FINISH!!

Finishing=Winning!

On another note, today is my last day of work until Jan. 3, 2011!!! I am home blogging because we have a power failure won’t open til noon!!! YAY!!!

I plan to run outside (if possible) and continue my Half Marathon training, play tennis, read, go to the movies, shop….(Pretend that I am retired!!!)

Happy Running! Today is the last day for my giveaway!!!
