I do have a plan.
But during for training for my marathon in 2019, I had a hard time following it. Those mid-week long runs were almost impossible when traveling for work or the weather didn’t cooperate.
This year, I’ve tried. I got the miles in but not exactly how it was supposed to be. For example: 3, 5, 3 became 4, 4, 3 and 3, 6, 3 became 4, 6, 2.
I still have a long way to go…. 8, 9, 10 miles on a week day????
But this past week, I actually ran 3, 6, 3 (as the plan said). Woo Hoo!
Last Week —
- Sunday – Not the warmest or sunniest day but still very relaxing and great to get away.
- Monday – DAY OFF from work!!
I got up early and ran 3 miles on the rail trail

too bad when the temps are cooler, the humidity is higher… did another FREE Peleton run – intervals 5:2, 5:2, 4:1, 1:1 or something like that
and then met my running friends for our hiking adventure.
First we headed to walk among the sunflowers.
Afterward we hiked at Huyck Preserve to view some waterfalls and then we walked around the lake
After our hike, we had a delicious lunch at the Shell Inn.
Then one last hike to earn our homemade ice cream (at Duck Pond)…
- Tuesday – I wasn’t sure if I would run my 6 miles after work or wait until Wed. AM. It all depended when I’d have company and the weather.
So I started the day at the gym and then decided to postpone my run. I met two friends for a walk instead.
- Wednesday – I got up early enough to get in 6 miles on the rail trail before work.
During this run, I listened to a podcast interview with Susanna Sullivan (who qualified for the World Championships in the marathon) – full-time teacher (9am-5pm), runs 100 miles a week, swims once a day and tutors in the evening.. I guess I can’t complain about not having enough time to do my miles each week.
I missed last month’s tennis ladies meet-up. But this week, it was held at someone’s home… They relaxed and swam in her pool but I joined them after work for dinner and drinks.
- Thursday – An early 3 mile run. This time my friend Deirdre was able to come…
and then I planned to join my friends for an evening on the trails…
but it was pouring so we went out to dinner instead. Thursdays has not gone well weather wise for this summer trail run series. (Last one is next week. Finger crossed for dry weather.)
- Friday – Rest Day/Gym morning. Mah jongg in the evening. My typical Friday.
- Saturday – Long Run Day or cut back/taper run. Yes, only 10 miles.
I was fortunate to have company for most of the 10.5 miles (yup went a little over). Ran 1.75 with Barb, Stan and Sherry and then ran back and met up with Heidi, Judy & Deirdre for 3.5 more in the opposite direction. Eventually I finished the last 1.5 solo and joined Jan, Denise, Chris & El (pictured) for brunch.
Very fortunate to be part of this group… we discussed our plans for next week’s race.
- Sunday – Gym time and then if the weather is nice, we’ll go boating…
This Coming Week on the Run (10 Weeks until NYCM)–
- Monday – run (AM)
- Tuesday – run (AM), hair appt.
- Wednesday – longer run (AM)
- Thursday – ARE trail run/walk (last one)
- Friday – GYM, rest day, mah jongg
- Saturday – Run 4 the River Half Marathon
- Sunday – GYM, rest day, boating?
This Coming Week on the Blog –
- Tuesday – Marathon #2
- Friday – Ultimate Coffee Date

Looks like a good start to marathon training! Did you consider hiring a coach to write a plan for you? It’s nice because they can customize the plan to fit your schedule.

I have. Too expensive. And I’m only running this Mara to finish.

Yup, we all have the same 24 hours, but there is still a difference as you get older (as far as recovery, etc.). You’re doing fine, and plans are meant to be change. Just guidelines.

I’ve run a marathon before so obviously I know that. Some people’s schedules are more flexible than others. I have to be logged in from 8-4 even at home.
I’m confident it’ll happen. And I feel better physically than I did when I was younger resting less.

People get it done working full time all the time. It’s not easy — of course it’s not supposed to be.

Love, love, love the sunflowers!
Looking at that training plans confirms why I will never run a marathon — that and all the injuries I tend to have when I even train for 1/2 distance.
I am sure you can get prepared without such long mid-week runs. What did you do before?

Before I just did the long runs.
I know you get it regarding work schedules.
But my goal is just enjoy it finish and run more.

I recall finding it tricky to fit in longer runs on weekdays (and I work at home for myself!) Especially whichever plan I had that wanted me to do speedwork and other complicated stuff on those days!

Glad it’s not just me.. but we just do what we can.
Speedwork? what’s that? LOL

Training plans are made to be adapted a bit to your schedule. Looks like you are doing a great job of making it work for you. Good luck with the half this week!

Thanks…
so far so good but the big runs are ahead! Gulp.

I agree that longer runs in the middle of the week are hard (but as you pointed out, a lot of people do them.) I think you’re doing great, and it’s not a big deal if you have to shift some runs around. The important thing is that you’re running regularly and getting the long runs in.
I love your attitude. We have to be confident that we can do these things (because we can!) Good luck on your half next week!

Yes. I’m trying to be optimistic about the hard things. Lol.

What Deborah said 😉 The training plans are “ideal” guidelines, but we’re human (with human schedules, LOL). I’d bet there are many who aren’t able to follow these plans with perfection. You still had a great week, and you’re keeping close with the suggested runs, etc. Those sunflowers are beautiful!

Love the sunflowers… soon they will be gone. sigh.
Yup doing my best with the plan… at least while the runs are short

I recognize that training plan I think- Hal? Nice job getting in some solid runs this week!

Thanks. The weather cooperated.

I tried that plan with a midweek long run and it so did not work for me. There are other ways to be ready for a marathon, and I am living proof of it. Looks like another busy and fun week. Those sunflower fields!

Thanks for saying that. Phew.

Well done with your marathon training! It really sounds like you had a great week. And the hiking with your running friends looks fabulous! As always, i love those sunflowers.
Amazing about the lady who tuns 100 miles a week while working full-time. There are so many people out there to get inspiration from!

There are. I try not to complain. And be inspired by them.

You’re off to a good start with your marathon training! There’s nothing wrong with making little adjustments as needed when you travel. Weather though? You never know what marathon day will bring so I always tried to get outside for all of my runs unless there was lightning.
You had some beautiful runs and hikes. I love seeing all of your pictures!

Definitely run outside (since I don’t own a treadmill.)
I enjoy taking photos, as you can tell.

Its nice to have a general plan, but you have to do what works for your life and schedule- no one can follow the plan 100% perfectly! You’ll be just fine 🙂
Love the sunflower pictures. Brilliant.
I read a bit about Sullivan but I missed that she ALSO swims twice a day- I had read that she often has double runs every day. I have teacher friends who really struggle to fit in any running, I am so impressed that she somehow makes it work AND tutors! WOW. I mean, I know she’s running at a much faster pace than normal people, but still…I wonder if she sleeps, ha!

I know.. she must not need a lot of sleep… she said this year she will not tutor in order to be ready for the Olympic trials.

You really do have some beautiful places to run. It’s been stifling here. Just miserable. I did a long run on Saturday and it was a bit cooler that morning but the humidity was 80% so we were all dripping with sweat just a mile into the run. It’s supposed to cool off this coming weekend, though. Great job getting those miles in!

We do have a variety of bike paths.
Too bad about the humidity. It makes runs harder than they should be.

I love a training plan, but not as much as I love sunflowers and ice cream. You got in quite a bit of awesome fun this week!

Love those sunflowers!! So beautiful. I know what you mean about getting to mid-week longer runs done. I always wonder that when I look far into my training plans, but it somehow all works out! Great job getting your miles in this week.

It is working out so far but I doubt I will continue to do them esp. if they impact my ability to do the long ones on the weekend… we’ll see.
