Friday Five and the Ultimate Coffee Date for August

It’s that time of the month…

still loving my France mugs

to join up with Coco & Deborah for their ultimate coffee date.

1.Over coffee…

I’d tell you that I only ran ONE race in July.

But I’m making up for it in August.

I signed up for FOUR (almost 5) this month.

  • 08-03-19 – Hudson River Ramble (8 m)
  • 08-14-19 – Al Goldstein 5k (in Brooklyn)
  • 08-17-19 – Jailhouse Rock 5k
  • 08-19-19 – Saratoga Track Mile

I have run them all before (except the one mile race). The Hudson Ramble is slightly different – used to be Race the Train (same course) but there is no longer a train.

I have a hair appt. on August 21 and will miss the the Hump Day 5k. 😦

last year’s Hump Day 5k

Only two are on a weekend so it should not disrupt marathon training too much.

Do you run many races in the summer?

2.Over coffee…

I’d tell you that I made the hotel reservation right away but finally made my flight reservations for my February race in Bermuda. I know it’s still early but flights are expensive and it was nerve racking trying to decide which days to go to take advantage of the cheaper prices.

Cari and I finally settled on leaving late Wed and returning early Monday. Four days and 5 nights in paradise!!!

Feb 12-17, 2020 – 2 mile sunset race on Feb 15 and a half marathon on Feb 16.

Anyone else running this race?  When will you be there? I’d love to meet up.

3.Over coffee…

I’d tell you that (not running-related sorry) that my new kitty become more manageable. He goes outside all the time but he comes home when I call him.

I mean, I am marathon training, I don’t have time for his shenanigans. lol

In fact, he came home just for this photo.

Does you pet interfere with your running?

4.Over coffee…

I’d tell you that I love my OLD Garmin 205.

People laugh when they see it but it’s great to be able to see all 4 screens of data on ONE screen.

my Garmin time

I’m on my third one. The battery life eventually wears out and I order a new one.

Being that I will be running a full marathon that may take me 6 hours, I was nervous that my trusty Garmin battery may not last as long as my race.

So I ordered a (used) new one.

Garmin Forerunner 230

Garmin 230

Anyone else have the 230? If so, do you like it?

5.Over coffee…

I’d tell you that actually the one I ordered was white. I am cheap and didn’t want to pay more for the purple one. So I bought the white one and then bought a (cheap) purple band.

Does color matter to you? If so, what’s your favorite color?

  1. I had the Garmin 230 and really liked it! I switched after a couple years because I wanted one with a built in heart rate monitor. I end up with weird color running shoes sometimes because I’ll just order the cheapest ones :). I want to keep the same model of shoe but don’t really care about color that much.

    • i have to try my 230. I don’t train by heart rate but I could also use my Apple watch.

I do buy crazy color shoes when they are cheap.

  2. The Vivoactive 3 does allow you to do 4 data screens, but obviously they’re a lot smaller and the top & bottom ones are somewhat limited as to what you can put in them. Which is annoying, but I only really need 3 so it’s ok.

The dogs need to be walked early in the summer. It can be hard to juggle that & running.

I kind of want to do a 5k in August & I kind of don’t. Since I don’t like the heat. If the weather is good I’ll probably do the 10k at the trail running festival but that will be a last minute decision.Spring/fall racing is more my jam.

    • No trail racing for this runner and I am busy that weekend or I would have volunteered.

Well, there are lots of 5ks in the fall too.

Since there are group runs on Wed and Thurs, I may try to run before work on Mondays.

  3. I have had the 220 for five years now and love it. And I’ve bought fun colorful bands on Amazon for dirt cheap and have never had a problem with them. It’s a really good idea to make sure your device will last as long as your marathon, good thinking on that.

Oh – when we were training our kitties to come home after being outside, we’d reward them with some canned cat food. Fourteen years later Henry still expects it, although he only gets it in the morning after being out all night.

  4. I was so tempted by Bermuda but the flights are not convenient that time of the year and very expensive. I am sure you all will have a blast! We are going to do New Orleans RnR instead. Sounds like August is a busy race month for you! Thanks for linking up today for coffee

    • yes it looks like August will be hectic but in a good way.

Flights to Bermuda are pricey. But I used FF miles and just have now get to NYC.

RNR New Orleans should be fun. I’d love to go there. Considering possibly RNR Atlantic City but no longer a Rock n Blogger so maybe not.

  5. Ooooh! That 1-mile track race sounds interesting. I have never done a 1-miler before, but I would love to. I’ll be excited to read your recap. February in Bermuda sounds like heaven! What a great trip to anticipate!

  6. I cannot even tell you how much I love that kitty! The pugs are generally still sleeping when I go out for my runs. They are absolutely uninterested in anything that early unless it involves them getting fed. Punks. 😛

Your August looks like my February. I do one or two races a month in the summer, because it’s just so miserable. I’m actually skipping the huge Tour De Pain this weekend (three races in 24 hours) because i just don’t have it in me this year.

  7. I wear my Garmin all the time so I do care about the color. I have the white band because it’s neutral. You are doing a lot of races in August. I will not race in summer.

Thanks for joining us for coffee!

  8. Bermuda sounds like such a great time, I so wish I could go!! I hope you and Cari have a blast!

I like your Garmin! I have the 235, which I don’t think is too different. I ran my first marathon with a Nike+ watch and it died around 23 miles in, lol! Love the purple color!

It’s funny because around here I rarely see so many races in this area – good luck on your upcoming races this month!

  9. I’m the same way with my Fitbit Blaze. I love it and I’m so sad they aren’t making it anymore!! Plus I could get a multipack of easy change colored bands super cheap on Amazon so I can “dress it up” (Ok, I clearly don’t dress up much) as much as I want or make it match different outfits.

  10. I have a Garmin 230 and I really like it! It is an upgrade from the Forerunner 10 I used to have, but it’s still pretty basic. It does everything I need so that’s really all that matters!

  11. Purple Garmin! WHen I got mine I was happy for the teal strap, but we both know I’d be pining for purple.
So excited for Bermuda — when I saw this mentioned I realized just how far behind I was in blog reading. Oops
