Look at this week’s weather!
Perfect for outdoor activities, right?
But I cannot walk, bike, play tennis or run!!!!!!!!!!
Yes, I am DEPRESSED!!!!!
I am trying to stay positive…
- I have been riding the exercise bike everyday for 20 minutes (catching up on the show Revenge). I even drove to work on Sat & Sun to do this. (Exercise makes me happy.)
- I have been “walking” on the treadmill everyday as well.
- I have been stretching, icing etc. as per PT advice.
- I have been knitting (almost done with sock #2 and bought wool for two more pairs)
- I went grocery shopping by myself.
- I have hit up Marshalls several times (it’s not the mall but they have shopping carts/walkers) and bought many cute tops.
- I went out to dinner with friends at my favorite restaurant.
However, every time, I get in my car, I see someone running and those negative thoughts creep in. Everytime, I go online, I read about my friends running, playing tennis and training for a marathon, those darn negative thoughts come back.
I
NEED
- I am improving each day.
- A broken ankle is not a fatal disease.
- 6 months isn’t forever.
Today I go back to my orthopedic doctor. Hopefully nothing is wrong with my hardware and bone healing and he will release me to the care of my PT.
So my plans include:
as I work total toward a FULL recovery. This means that I will walk without a limp, I will do yoga, I will run and I will play tennis.

But there are always challenges in life. It will make me stronger. (Gulp!)
And finally:
Stick with me as I vent. Writing things down helps me believe it!

So sorry you are feeling low. I know that feeling when you see somebody running and you are so sad you can’t do it…it’s soul crushing.
But, that’s great you are doing the bike! And I’m sure the PT guy will give you plenty more things to do as you heal up.
Perhaps there is more you could do to be ready to rock and roll when your foot ready?..some ideas to channel your frustration into?
1) Do the bike hard/easy on alternate days… Can you do high resistance sprints on the bike or does that hurt your foot too much? Keep the cadence high (85+) so you get your legs ready for running cadence.
2) Strength training for upper body, lower body. Bones get thicker and stronger when you put them under load. Super important for everybody as we get older, esp women.
3) Core strength and flexibility routines are good. I like this one for the hip stabilizers:

I would think all of this stuff would be good for tennis too, no?
Injuries suck, no doubt about it.

Hang in there Darlene…you’re making great progress. One of the things I personally like about blogging is that one can vent on any given topic, (especially not being able to run at all or like one wants due to injury) and find a friendly ear who can sympathize. We all go through the valleys, which makes the peaks that much more magnificent.
As you go through this valley, never forget that you have friends who truly care…both “real” and “virtual”.
Later, when you are running again, you’ll view this valley in a different way. Glad you aren’t in it, and proud to have climbed out of it.

Oh, I feel your pain. I think you are being very positive given your situation. You will run again. You are healing wisely. You are learning new things (knitting). You are still blogging and keeping in touch with your bloggy friends. 🙂 I hope you got good news at the doctors and are recovering as you should be.
