Wednesday Word: Friendship

Deb Runs

Every Wednesday, the Deb from Deb Runs will be providing a word about which to blog. Kind of like a nice little blog prompt. Posts can be fitness or health related, but don’t have to be, so really anyone can play along. Just be sure to link up with InLinkz on Deb’s main post, and share the love by reading and commenting on other’s participant’s posts.

This week’s Word is FRIENDSHIP

Besides family, there’s nothing more important than friends. They are there when times get tough. They support your interests and keep you company. You could ask them for a favor because you know they would never refuse. You can’t imagine life without them.

I feel very fortunate to have a lot of good friends.

I am still in contact with a few friends from high school and college.  It is great to connect with them and reminisce (about the good old days.) I have also made a bunch of GREAT friends as an older adult from the activities that I do…tennis, boating, quilting, mah jongg, running, etc.  And I also have several from work (all 3 of my careers.) All of these people are precious to me.

still friends after all these years (45 to be exact)…wish I would see them more often

Judy, on the right is my closest friend. We went to college together and still get together almost weekly to chat. She is the most caring person you could meet.

friendquote

I know I may have left some people out (Sorry) …. but this post is getting lengthy.

Since this is a running blog, I should mention those runners that I also consider to be my friends…

Camp Chingachgook - August

I met Judy through Facebook. We now run some races together and even weekly training runs

IMG_5785

I met AJH in 2010 through her blog. Since then, even though she lives in VT, I think we have run at least one race a year together.

I met Mary at a race in 2010 and we have been friends ever since. Unfortunately, she moved to CA but luckily I have still gotten to see her each year.

You may have noticed that most of friends do not run. There are just a few overlaps.

20140511-210428.jpg

MaryPat from tennis actually started me running

20140621-125904-46744233.jpg

Natalie is a mah jongg friend who I inspired to run.

my quilting friend Terry (who I never saw)

Terry is a quilting friend who is also a big distance runner

But all my friends support my running. (They may think I am nuts but don’t say so to my face LOL)

Happy Running! Do you have a lot of friends or just a few close ones? Do you friends share your love of running?

Wednesday Word: Inspirational

This week’s Word is INSPIRATIONAL

I looked up the definition of INSPIRATIONAL and this it what I found: Imparting inspiration.

So what is INSPIRATION?

a person, place, experience, etc., that makes someone want to do something

In this case, the something is run and even more specifically, run stronger, run farther, run faster.

So here are some of my inspirations:

  • Strong Running Mamas

This group of beginning runners and their enthusiasm inspired me to go from just running 5ks to 10ks, 15ks and half marathons.

  • Bloggers

There are too many to mention but I read their blogs and learn from their experiences.  They inspire me to be a better runner (and better does not necessarily mean faster.)

  • Races

Register for The Biggest Loser RunWalk at www.biggestloser.com/runwalk

Every time, I run a race, even it’s not my best, I can’t wait to run another race.  Races are an inspiration.

  • Scenic Places.

denver2

I love to run in different places. When I pass or visit a beautiful place, I always want to run there. What an inspiration!

  • Running Friends
IMG_6231

Judy inspires me with her healthy cooking, her training plans and her positive attitude to running

image

Mary inspires me with her distances and her ability to come back after injuries

and Harriette Thompson who ran a marathon at age 92.

They seem ageless. Could anything be more inspirational that that??

Happy Running! What is inspirational for you?

Wednesday Word: Modest

Deb Runs

Every Wednesday, the Deb from Deb Runs will be providing a word about which to blog. Kind of like a nice little blog prompt. This week’s Word is MODEST

I looked up the definition of MODEST and this it what I found:

  • unassuming or moderate in the estimation of one’s abilities or achievements
  • not too proud or confident about yourself or your abilities
  • not showing or feeling great or excessive pride

I am most definitely modest.  In fact, I may be too modest.

When someones says: “Boy, you’re fast.”  I always respond: “Not really.  Many runners are much faster than I am.”

When someone says: “You’re amazing. You run half marathons.” I respond: “It’s hard but anyone can too. You just have to want to and train for it.”

When someone says: “You’re always winning awards.” I respond: “That’s because I am old. Less competition at my age.”

I hate to boast and I don’t really think I am doing anything extraordinary.

Of course, I am proud of what I achieve, but I never wear my medals in public.  I take a photo and then put them away.

IMG_5868

In fact, my friends who do not run do not even know about most of my races and they have no idea that I have a blog or a FB page. Not even my husband knows about my blog.

I am always surprised when I PR or have a fast time in a race. I am just not confident that I can run fast.

race_697_photo_14832070

shocked at my half marathon PR??

Until recently, I never joined a running group because I was “modest” about my running abilities.  I didn’t think I was fast enough and didn’t want to run alone.

frwtraining3

I will run with a slower runner.  I don’t mind at all. I would hate for someone to say that “I was too slow” to run with.

IMG_6042

Judy thinks that I am too fast for her but it is not true.

Happy Running! Are you modest?

Wednesday Word: Humble

Deb Runs

Every Wednesday, the Deb from Deb Runs will be providing a word about which to blog. Kind of like a nice little blog prompt. Posts can be fitness or health related, but don’t have to be, so really anyone can play along. This week’s Word is HUMBLE

I looked up the definition of HUMBLING and this it what I found:

  • causing awareness of your shortcomings
  • making you realize that you are not as good as you thought

I have not found anything as humbling as running!!!

RUNNING IS HARD!!

  • Running up hills is humbling!

18800157512_6d733af825_o This was at the beginning of my last half marathon (and at the end)!!

  • Running injured is humbling!

rw_5k_a

I hadn’t been diagnosed yet but I was in pain and it turned out to be a stress fracture in my right foot. I ran 2 races with that injury.  I have also run with a broken foot in addition to other less serious injuries.

  • Running in adverse temps (cold, hot, rain, etc.) is humbling!

1798082_684504678254632_1919006174_n

lr2

I ran the Love Run Half Marathon in Philly in cold monsoon-like rain. I also ran 2 other halfs in the rain, one in the freezing temps of January and one in the heat and humidity of July.  All were very tough, to say the least.

  • Running after a long layoff is humbling!

2

This photo was taken after finishing a half marathon in March 2013. It was 16 months after serious ankle surgery. My previous half had been in November 2011.  It was definitely harder than I thought it would be.

  • Falling during a race is humbling!

Mastodon Challenge 5K
Unfortunately it has happened to me twice.  Both times, I was just cut up and not seriously injured.

  • Trying to run fast is humbling!
image

A flat course where it all just went wrong!!

Often, you get spoiled and when you have a good race, you think all of the ones after will be.

Not so!!

I ran a half in 2:09 and then the next one I struggled to finish in 2:20, and the 2 after that were even slower.  Humbling!!

I’ve had the same experience with 5ks lately.

and I think MOST DAYS RUNNING IS HARD and sometimes IT IS also HUMBLING!

Happy Running! What do you find humbling?
