Injury Update

good thing I kept those critches
I just spent 2 depressing days at home. I am already tired of TV and books and CRUTCHES…wah..wah

Today I went my orthopedist.  I got an appointment with the same guy that did the surgery on my ankle.

Well, obviously Monday is the busiest day at the Bone and Joint Center. I waited 2 hours to see the doctor.  He looked at my foot and said it didn’t look broken but he would look at the xrays.   Then he said that he didn’t see anything in the xrays so he ordered another set. Another hour went by and he came back and said:  “It’s broken.”

5th Metatarsal

He said the (fifth metatarsal) fracture was stable which is good.  I asked if it was a Jones fracture or an Avulsion fracture (I did my Google research and they are the most common) and he said “Neither.”

He pointed to wear the break was and it is mid-shaft.  He said it is not displaced and that is why it doesn’t hurt and is not swollen.

This doc is the same guy who replied after I broke my ankle “No promises” when I asked if I would run again.

So he gave me no info on my injury other than, “come back in 2 weeks so I can see if the bone remains in tact.”  In the meantime, I have to wear that ugly shoe and use crutches.

It seems pretty senseless to be depressed.  Tomorrow, I am going to the funeral of my neighbor who is also a fellow tennis player.  He is 63, his daughter just had a baby and his son is getting married in July.

So I have a broken foot and I cannot run.  But I am alive.

Happy Running!  Thanks for your support.

  1. Heal fast. I don’t think I do want your bib for that race but thanks. I was going to do a race this Saturday but I’m waiting to see what the weather is. If I do a ten miler there is one quite near here that same weekend.

  2. Aw sweetie, so sorry your injured…believe me I know how you feel…great attitude to have though..life is short and our injuries are really insignificant in the grand scheme of life…not that your injury is insignificant to your life of running but you know what I’m saying…lol…heal fast my sweet friend!

  3. ARGH!!! So sorry to hear about this.

You will heal up, hang in there.

    Some ramblings:

I’m wondering if your doc has any ideas on how to strengthen the bones in your foot?

Normally I think the impact loading of running would thicken the bones of your legs and foot..but perhaps you are low in calcium or something like that?

Might be worth prodding him a little. A ounce of prevention etc….

My other thought is that perhaps there is a way to strengthen the muscles of your foot such that they take up the sudden shock better? One legged balance exercises (barefoot…eventually with eyes shut) might be good..lots of running books recommend them for a lot of reasons. (And as we get older our balance goes downhill and such drills are good to fight that)

One more thought: it may be better for you to wear shoes that do not have thick soles (if that is indeed what you have?) as well as more give you more foot mobility. High thick soles would give a lever arm to a twisting that would be more. Imagine wearing crazy platform shoes: when you go over it is BAD, huge twisting on the foot. If you go over barefoot…not so bad. So thick soles might be bad (?)

Or maybe you need mopre stable shoes (wider, not thicker..so called ‘motion control’ ?) . I really don’t understand all the issues like a running specialist would..but whatever kind of shoe you have it might be good to change to the opposite kind 😉

Please forgive my presumptions…just trying to blue sky some ideas that might help.

    Get better soon!

    • Thanks for all your advice.

      Injury shoe history:

Strained achilles was in my Saucony. Broken ankle was falling on ice – can’t blame my Brooks, stress fracture was overuse on the other foot, not sure if I can blame my Mizunos. Turning my foot was in my Newtons which I used to love…

      Next shoe??
