Hope and 2 Anniversaries

Today I cannot walk.  Today I cannot run.  Eventually I will walk.  Evenutally I will run.

1 year ago today, I ran my FIRST HALF MARATHON!!!

Half in Naples, Florida

I had doubts about my ability to do it but I gave it a shot even though my longest race before that was a 5K.  And I did it.  I also ran 4 more during last year.   And I hope to run another in the future.  Boy am I glad, that I took on this challenge!!!

13 years ago, I married my current hubby.

I also had doubts since both of us had been married before.  Both marriages ended poorly.  But we did it.  And I couldn’t get through this injury without him!  I am glad that I took on this challenge too!

Happy Running!  What challenges have you taken on that have changed your life?

  1. Congratulations on your anniversary Darlene.

I think starting running changed my life a bit. I didn’t think I could do it or stick with it when I started in March 2009 but till today I still run and I can’t imagine that I won’t run ever again. Some periods I run less but I never stop doing it.

  2. First, congratulations on your two anniversaries. We can often accomplish so much more than we imagine, if we will “just do and don’t think” (or at least, don’t over-think it).

In April of last year, I was easily 30 pounds overweight, had a 40 inch waist, and couldn’t run further than a a mile and a half.

On December 29th (8 months later, 32 pounds lighter, and 7 inches thinner in the waist) I ran a 26.3 mile training run with no walk breaks (pre-marathon long run for the marathon coming up in February). It wasn’t fast or all that pretty, but it was a life-long dream of mine to be able to run a marathon distance (and in about 40 days, I’ll run my first marathon race). The confidence that this has instilled in me is moving me forward in other areas of my life as well.

A solid belief in ourselves, and an unwillingness to take NO for an answer (unless medically necessary of course) unlocks many doors.

  3. Congrats on your anniversaries! I have goals of my own as well to run at least two half marathons in 2012.. within the past couple of months I broke my ankle and haven’t ran a race since than so it’s going to be hard to get back into it. I think my biggest goal right now is just to get back into running because it’s such a great feeling! Good Luck!!
