Success is …

Determined by how you handle setbacks.

I got that quote from AJH‘s header.

I went for an Ultrasound today on my right heel.

Diagnosis: No tears but there is scar tissue and inflammation around the Achilles Tendon.

He thinks the scar tissue is there from a previous injury (maybe from waterskiing accident 10 yrs ago) but the inflammation is from overuse or overpronation related to running or tennis.

Treatment: Continue ice and anti-inflammatory drugs but NO RUNNING OR TENNIS FOR 4-6 WEEKS!!!!!!!  He orderd PT 3x a week for 4 wks and if that doesn’t help, then a cortisone shot and immobilzation.

I made an appt with the Dr’s recommended PT (which is near where I work) for next Wed. Next ultrsound is scheduled for Aug 12.

(Too bad, I didn’t go to the doctor 5 wks ago at the first sign of pain. I could be healed already…)

So how will I handle my setback?

  • I will cry.
  • I will complain.
  • I will make my hubby and friends miserable by my misery.
  • I will gain weight by eating lots of ice cream to make myself feel better.
  • I will have more time for reading and movie going.
  • I may even do some gardening & cleaning out of the house.
  • I will continue yoga and light walking to stay in shape. (May be even join a gym to build upper body strength.)
  • I will lose weight (since I don’t have to carb load).
  • I will heal QUICKLY!!!
  • No July 23 ,July 30 or Aug 13 5k races or Aug 10k but I plan to walk the Sept 25 Half Marathon!!!
  • I plan to race my 4th Half Marathon on Nov 6. (How’s that for optimism?)

Happy Running! Any tips for surviving a running injury?

  1. That quote did help me when my heel was being a pain.

It seems like forever when you are going through it but now it is just a blip on my radar when I wasn’t running. I would rather take a little too long than too short a time off. It also took me awhile to accept it. Once I did it was okay. Especially because of the whole biking thing which as you know I have totally fallen in love with. So that was a good thing. May you find something that satisfies you.I”m glad you’re going to do the Adirondack Half and I don’t think it is too optomisitic to think you’ll run in November. I know I just murdered the spelling of that but I am too tired to fix it.

  2. I’m sorry to hear about the “verdict”. I have no tips for you since I never had a running injury before and have no experience how to handle it. But the positive things you will do for the next 6 weeks will surely help you deal with it.

  3. i have to say my injury that took me out of running last year was horribly hard emotionally and yet probably one of the best things to ever happen to my running because if forced me to cross train and thus made my whole body and all of my running stronger.

i am really sorry about the injury, but you are right…it’s how you handle it that matters!
