Five Runfessions for January 2021

It’s that time again. Time to get things off my chest with Marcia’s Runfessions at Marcia’s Healthy Slice

and the first one for 2021!!

1. I runfess…

I jumped on the FREE two month trial of Peleton.  I have done some of the runs and the cycling classes.

an Elvis ride

Everyone seems to LOVE it.

Maybe I expected too much.  I find it hard to search for classes. I want to be able to search by the type of music!  I also want to listen to the music and not have it overshadowed by the instructor’s voice. I know they are trying to motivate you but …. And I also find the running classes too short.  Most are 20 or 30 minutes (a few are 45 min.) I usually run 3 miles.  So I have to start running early and then switch or run after to get my miles done.  Lastly, I wish that I could download the class onto my phone so I could run outside without using up all my data and my battery life. (I do not have unlimited.) I’m pretty sure it’s my problem because my phone connects to my Apple watch which I use for distance and recording my steps (for Virgin Pulse $$). I think I just have to put both on airplane mode (haven’t had the time to experiment.)

Have you signed up for Peleton? Do you love it?  Or do you have any complaints about it?

2. I runfess…

I am stubbornly continuing to run 10 miles every weekend.  I admit. It is hard for me to run that many miles alone.  With the weather and COVID-19, the size of my running crew has shrunk. I think this winter is going to be challenging.

not fun!!

Do you do your long runs solo or do you prefer to have company?

3.I runfess…

I still haven’t decided on my next half marathon. I reserved my hotel rooms, booked my flights, rented a car (and got time off from work) just in case I run this one:

Publix Fort Lauderdale A1A Marathon

Feb. 14, 2021

I am DEFERRING this Melbourne race until 2022:

Feb. 7, 2021

The Fort Lauderdale race would work out perfectly timing-wise. I have Lincoln’s birthday and Presidents’ Day off (Friday & Monday).  I also have four friends who winter in Delray Beach (about 20 min away.)

But the virus and wearing masks…..

Anyone else running or have run any in-person races in Florida?

4. I runfess…

I had deferred last year’s April (re-scheduled to August) half marathon.  Fortunately, our local racing organization (ARE) will be holding this race and a few others. We have until Feb. 1 to decide whether to run it in 2021 or defer again to a future year.

I so want to race that I signed up for this year.  Reluctantly. It’s not on the original course but on the course that I ran on last November. (It will go back to the original course in 2022.)

2019 – downhill

vs

2020 – hilly

Have you signed up for any in-person races yet? Do you plan to?

5.I runfess…

I signed up for three virtual races – a free 5k on January 1.

NYRR Virtual Resolution Run 5K

and a 15k on January 30.

Virtual Houston 15k

I didn’t plan to race either one but I will have company for both.

New Year’s Day virtual friends

One of my running friends who is in Florida will run the 15k with me virtually tomorrow as well Kim (and maybe some other bloggers.)

And then this one by March 15k:

a 5k – you get this medal and a gaiter. Who could resist this memory of 2021?? What to join me (virtually)??

Do you enjoy running virtual races with virtual running friends or do you run them alone?

It’s Friday so I’m also linking up with bloggers, Me (My First 5K and More), Running With AttitudeRun Laugh Eat PieRuns with Pugs, and Zenaida!

  1. I hate all this uncertainty regarding races. I hope you get to do some of yours. I am running in a 3-hour trail race tomorrow. We have to wear a mask for the entire time, which I completely understand but am not looking forward to. I did sign up for some small trail races in PA for this spring. I hope I can get the vaccine before then, but even if I don’t, I did some races last summer and felt safe. The part I miss is hanging out before/after the race with friends.

  2. We’re headed to Florida the third weekend in March. In a normal year, I’d be scouring all the nearby races (we’re going to be in Tampa), but I have not even hit “search” once this year. And I’m okay with that LOL Our weather is looking sketchy for tomorrow morning, so I’m not sure when I’ll get my Hot Chocolate 5K done….I might have to run it with Milly ((sigh))

    • It will be negative digits for me. I will do it outside no matter what though.
Fla is having in-person races. If you want, you can find them.

  3. Good for you for sticking with those 10 milers! Those are all valid issues about the Peloton App. For classes in the Artist Series, you can search under Collections > Artist Series and then they are in alphabetical order. There’s also a 3d party app that you can use. As for the chatting, some instructors are worse than others. I tend to pick the ones that focus on coaching vs. shout-outs.

  4. I have the same issue with Peloton when it comes to searching by music type – and as Coco said, some instructors are more chatty than others, which definitely sways which classes I pick.

Good for you for sticking with those 10-mile runs – without a race, I just cannot motivate to get there. I have yet to sign up for a virtual race for 2021 – still holding out hope in-person races will start to make an appearance here.

  5. Oh my gosh, the Feel the Bern medal! So cute! I’ve been running 10 miles every weekend. Always alone. Which I’m okay with but some running friends would be nice once in a while. I have marathon #40 on the schedule in June (deferred from last year). I doubt it will happen and I’m NOT going to do it virtually. My other marathon was supposed to be in February and it is postponed until ?

  6. I runfess the following: No WAY would I go to Florida right now and run a live race. Florida seems like a very dangerous place as far as Covid goes and unless I’ve had the virus (I haven’t) or the vaccine (not even on the list yet) you wouldn’t even catch me a few states away from Florida. That said, I hope you get to participate if that’s what you really want to do!!

we have no live races going on here in NL and no idea when that will happen. Plus we cannot really travel right now. we can’t even enter Belgium or Germany by car and flying isn’t appealing at all (and unnecessary). so in the meantime I will do a few virtuals. I really hope in a few months things are different but it’s such a sh*tshow here I just don’t know if that will happen.

    • I appreciate your candor. I will have both vaccines. The race has passed all the Covid guidelines.

And yes. I am anxious for things to return to normal.

  7. I’m the only person in the world who hasn’t tried the Peloton app! I don’t have access to a spin bike and use other apps for HIIT and stuff. I love the music and community aspect but otherwise not so much.

I listen to podcasts and books to make my solo runs go by faster. I also run outside with friends – we all wear face coverings – not everyone on the path does but most people are.

  8. The Hot Chocolate virtual 15k should be fun – they have the best race swag too!

On the Peloton app you can search by music – it’s under Filter -> Music. Hopefully that helps! I have noticed that some instructors talk more than others (this was my sister’s complaint too), but it doesn’t bother me too much as long as there’s purpose to what they are saying.

  9. Ha! The Feel the Bern 5k! I love that!

I am almost ready to join you at the 10 mile mark! It’s getting there!

Sorry the Peloton classes weren’t what you hoped. That disappointing.

There are lots of in-person races going on where I live. I am staying away from the big ones right now, because that’s where my personal comfort level lies. The events have done a great job with runner, staff, and volunteer safety, at least as far as I can tell!

    • That’s good about the safety in the races you’ve run. The ft. Lauderdale one seems to have done a lot to maintain safety.

The Peleton classes aren’t bad. I think I expected something different.

  10. No appetite for virtual races, but you know that.

I think if I do anything but Penguin it will be non NYC races. I’m not ready for crowds yet and not sure I will be. The FLL one just didn’t feel safe to me even if it’s objectively fine. Look forward to seeing what you decide to do.

Let me know if you still need help with Peloton/Airplane mode. There’s one run where it stubbornly doesn’t work, but no issues otherwise. I don’t have an Apple Watch though so that might be one piece I can’t help with. I’ve been doing the indoor runs outside for the length and just ignore the inclines when they call for it. I’m kind of obsessed with the app.

    • I think the race for me is a reason to get out of dodge and see the ocean. Of course it would be more fun if you were there. Hopefully we can do Zooma cape cod.

I am putting my phone on airplane mode. Not sure if it’s using all my data. We’ll see.
