Ultimate Coffee Date – January 2021

It’s that time of the month…

to join up with Coco & Deborah for their ultimate coffee date.

And it’s the first one of 2021!  What a difference a year makes…

1.Over coffee…

I’d tell you that I am glad, like most of you, that 2020 has ended.  It wasn’t all bad

seemed like it was going to be the best year…

but for me, personally, there were quite a few sad things that happened during this year. I’m demoting 2020 from 5 starts to one star.

2. Over coffee…

I’d tell you that that in 2019, I was so excited to be running my first full marathon.  In 2020, I was so excited to try to complete one half marathon each month.

HM #1 in 2020

2021? I wonder what I should be excited about (related to running)?

new year goals

in limbo

Do you have any big running goals for this year?

3. Over coffee…

I’d tell you that it’s getting harder and harder (in the cold weather) to do my long runs without big races on my schedule.

this was HARD!

Do you still do your weekend long runs?  Are they shorter than pre-pandemic?

4. Over coffee…

I’d tell you that that although I want to go on a race-cation in Florida in February, I don’t want to be uncomfortable or make my family and friends uncomfortable. So if the race actually happens and I go, I’ll be staying in hotels rather than with people that I know. (Fortunately I still have hotel pts for free rooms from 2019’s work travel.)

my 3 good friends who live in Delray Beach, FL

Any vacations planned for 2021?  Will they be different than in the past?

5. Over coffee…

I’d tell you that I can’t wait to get my COVID vaccine!! (My hubby got his yesterday!!!!!!!)

It’ll be the first sign that things are moving in the right direction on containing this virus.

I do hope people do get it. I know there are those to do not get the vaccines that are recommended (like their flu or shingles shots (if over 50))

Will you be getting the vaccine right away? Or are you worried about the side effects?

One more for good measure:

6. Over coffee…

I’d tell you that I have registered for two mileage challenges for 2021 – both for 1000 miles:

ZOOMA Run Club Logo (1).png

I’m a Skirt Sports/ZOOMA ambassador so of course, I participated in this one (even though I signed up for the free version + the beanie)

and

you get this super cool medallion, a great looking quarter zip for winter running, and a short sleeve techie for when it warms up.

Have you signed up for a 2021 mileage challenge? If so, which one?

It’s also Friday so I’m also linking up with Fairytales and Fitness for the Friday Five linkup! Join in! Don’t forget to link back to your hostess and visit some other bloggers.

  1. You are right, 2020 wasn’t all bad. But it was bad. I’m trying to focus on the good and that was running! and fitness. The vaccine! It was like getting an injection of optimism. Here’s to a better year and a return to normalcy.

    Happy New Year, Darlene!

    • I agree. My hubby got the vaccine. I was so excited!! It’s me & him in the house. It makes me feel safer.

Running was the highlight of this awful year. Glad COVID couldn’t cancel that.

      Happy New Year, Wendy!!

  2. I have lost all mojo for long runs, and when I do run longer, long is shorter than it used to be! I’m not planning on any races in 2021, but do have a deferred registration for Richmond in November.

    • Hopefully November, it will be all over.

I am stubborn about my long runs. Trying to keep it up until I want to or the weather/injury stops me.

You are very active with your workouts and biking. You don’t need those long runs.

  3. So glad for your husband!
My parents are trying to register for a vaccine but so far it’s all fully booked. I guess it will take a few weeks.

Staying in a hotel in Florida for your race sounds like a good idea.
Would you ever move there when you’re retired?

  4. I really didn’t run long at all in 2020. I had no plans of doing any more marathons but I’m not even in half marathon shape at this point – whoops!

How wonderful that your husband already got the vaccine! I can’t wait until the roll out really amps up and it’s available to lots of people. I really feel like this is the first glimmer of hope I’ve had in months.

    • Yes I agree. I can’t wait to get my shot.

I’m afraid to run less than 10. It’s so hard to get back into that comfort level when you stop.

You’ll be able to ease back once you sign up for a race.

  5. My “long runs” currently are at 5 miles LOL I’m going to maintain that for January, but may try to get back to 10-mile long runs on the weekends after February gets here. I do have a few half marathons I’m eyeing for the spring, so it will be fun to get back to that “normal” routine. It may be awhile before the vaccine is available to me or the hubby, mainly because of our age. I’m hoping my parents get in line for it, though, as soon as it’s available for them.

    • My hubby is an essential worker. Don’t know when I can get it.

Coming back from an injury it’s smart to keep your mileage low.

Let’s hope we both are running half marathons in 2021.

  6. I do not plan to do any runs over 5-6 miles since my injury unless my PT says it’s okay. For now, I’m grateful that I can run 5K’s and can’t wait for live races to open back up!

Our family had lots of good things happen in 2020 and we were all able to keep working, albeit virtually. I miss the simple things we took for granted like visiting with friends, but in the grand scheme of things, that’s insignificant as compared to what others are going through – losing family members, their businesses, etc. And yes, I will get my vaccine as soon as I’m eligible.

Happy New Year and have a great weekend!

  7. That is great that your husband got his vaccine already. Hopefully we will all be right behind him. I agree, it’s hard to plan for running goals for the year when we are not sure they are going to happen. I am looking at races in the fall right now

  8. Oh lord, when I first started doing “longer than 6 mile” runs it was such a novelty and I was almost afraid that if I didn’t do a long run that I would lose the ability. Now, unless I’m training for a half I stick to the 6-8 mile range.

Yay that your husband got the vaccine! I will be getting mine the first chance that I get. The estimate is that most of our state will have it by this summer so I know it’s coming even if I don’t know when. I will be so relieved when my parents get it and are out of danger.

    • I was like that until the pandemic. I guess there wasn’t much else to do on a Saturday. Then I just kept it up thinking I’d be racing.

My hubby is an essential worker. Don’t know when I’ll get mine.

  9. Ha! That coffee mug is perfect. I would give 2020 zero stars too if I could. My weekend long runs are getting shorter and shorter. I did 10 miles last week. I think I will do 11 this week. It’s tough keeping my mileage up if I have nothing to train for.
Good for your hubby. I will get the vaccine as soon as I can. Who knows when that will be? I hope you get to go to Florida this winter. I can understand your reluctance to stay with your friends. I am hoping to be able to visit my Colorado grandson in April.

    • Yes it really is hard to get motivated without a race.

My hubby is an essential worker so I don’t know when I’ll get mine.

Florida is still a big maybe. But at least I have a local race in April. Hopefully more in the fall.

  10. I think it’ll be a good long time until it’s my turn for the vaccine, but I’m going to get it as soon as I can. Isn’t that beanie cute? Glad you joined! I runfess my weekend long run has slipped away.

    • Yes. I love the beanie.

You are so active. You don’t need to run long

Hope to see in the fall. Cape Cod weekend!! Can we top Bermuda?

  11. haha, that cup is way too accurate. I’m glad you were able to get the vaccine + really hope most people get it too so we can hopefully get back to some semi-semblance of “normal”-ish life.

Happy new year to you. Hope it’s a good one.

  12. I have no real running plans for 2021 except keep one foot in front of the other as I can. And yes, my long runs are shorter. They’re hard on the body (even if they don’t feel hard) so no reason to add unnecessary stress. Just maintaining my base.

I don’t anticipate being vaccinated until the end. Mr. Judy has a dr’s appt next week & we’ll see if he’ll be sooner or later, no idea.

I definitely want to travel at some point. Not anytime soon, unfortunately. And let’s just say planning ahead tends to stress Mr. Judy out – unless it’s financial, it seems.

    • My plans are not elaborate since who knows what will be this year. Thinking there’s won’t be real safe races until next fall at the earliest. But if races are scheduled, I will participate (if I feel they are safe). No pressure to run 10 and if I feel any I won’t… it’s much easier to run longer if you are chatting the whole time. I feel grateful for the company since May.

  13. It’s been a year, that’s for sure. That mug is perfect!

My husband and I are both in healthcare, so we already got our first vaccines. He will get his second on Tuesday, and I will get mine next Saturday. My mom is 91 and lives with us, so keeping her healthy is our number one priority. I did register her with our county’s website, so hopefully it will be available to her soon.

    Happy New Year!
