Oops, I Did It Again

Since it’s Tuesday, I’m joining the link-up organized by Zenaida and Kim (Kooky Runner)

The Topic for today is: What are some running mistakes you’ve made or keep on making?

  • Incorrect Dress

Not dressing warm enough (though this is rare)

I was FREEZING.

and dressing too warmly (too often).

too warm during this race

  • Starting Out a Race Too Fast

ALWAYS.  I think I’ve only had one race ever with negative splits (and only because I was running with someone else).

  • Running With An Injury

I am better about that now but I have raced with a stress fracture and a broken foot.

 can even smile in pain

  • No Warm-Ups or Cool Downs

Guilty as charged.  Always in a rush to get it done.

  • No Strength Training.

Yup.  Nada or rarely on my part. No time. No Interest. Many excuses….

  • Too Much Focus on Speed

I have to say that this is my past.  I used to obsess about my finish times and PRs.

I no longer really care if I get faster.

Now my focus in running is on enjoyment and connecting with friends.  I know that when I run with “slower” runners, I will not improve. But now I get more satisfaction in that I am helping and motivating others.

most likely my slowest half ever… whatever!

I’m also linking up here:

Formerly the Running Coaches’ Corner, it’s back with new co-hosts Coach Debbie RunsRunning on HappyConfessions of a Mother RunnerMile by MileRuns with Pugs, and Fauxrunner.

Happy Running! Have you also made any of the above mistakes or any others? Please share.

  1. I could probably write a book on all the mistakes I’ve made (and continue to do) while running, lol. Some of the same ones as you. And I still like to run fast, although my body doesn’t allow me to do it very often anymore!

  2. To my credit, I am good about not running if something hurts but I believe I can claim everything else on this list. Strength training tho…yes I “should” step it up, but can I just say that I am with you…no interest.

  3. Very good points, Darlene! I forgot about incorrect dress, that’s a good one, too.

I’m still obsessing about finishing times and PRs. I hope I can get better at that, just like you did. After all, it is more rewarding to help others instead of focusing on one’s own goals.

    • ha ha. I’m not obsessing because I don’t consider virtual races really races. I plan to stay this one once we race again BUT……I am a competitive person by nature. We’ll see if I maintain this attitude.

  4. We shared many of the same for this link-up 😉 I didn’t even think about the dressing too warm/cold. I’m always more concerned with being cold (as opposed to being too warm), so I guess I don’t consider that a mistake if I have an extra layer LOL

  5. Incorrect dress — don’t all runners go through that? Always? — and starting out too fast. That was one reason I enjoyed working with a coach, having paces to guide me. I’ve actually started out too slow in some races, too, and regretted it, believe it or not.
