As so the decade has ended…
And I was home for the second week in a row. My running was slow, painful but continuing (which was a good thing, I think.)
Last Week –
- Monday – My 8 year anniversary… serious ankle surgery due to a broken fibula and tibia…
Five months of recovery and I was back to running.
To celebrate, I had to run, right? Too bad it was raining and sleeting. No choice but to head to the gym for a few miles on the dreadmill.
- Tuesday – New Year’s Eve. I normally would have run but I had planned to race the next day and I was going out with the hubby. But first I rode the bike at the gym.
- Wednesday – Day Off and I started it with a local race. Winter Series #2. There were several options but I chose the 3.5 miler (or actually 3.75). I knew a lot of runners here so it was great to catch up. Only one of my “Sole Sisters” ran it this year.
- Thursday – Just in case the doctor told me to stop running, I ran after work again…back to UAlbany with a friend.
Then I went out to dinner with a former co-worker. The holiday over-eating continues.
- Friday – Foot Doctor appt. I told him that it felt a little better but that it still hurt. He wanted to give me a cortisone shot. I wanted a MRI so I could know exactly what was wrong. So I went for an MRI. Now I’m waiting for the results. After work and before mah jongg, I went back to the gym to ride the bike.
- Saturday – Long run scheduled with the Sole Sisters. With a possible half marathon in a few weeks, I had decided to try and increase my distance. Unfortunately there was rain…lots of rain so I got my nails done instead… and did a lot of cleaning around the house.
- Sunday – Rescheduled long run. It was cold and windy but at least dry. Many (but not all) of the Sole Sisters went able to come to run, walk and or have brunch.
This Coming Week –
- Monday – rest day, train to NYC, dinner with friends
- Tuesday – run (High Line)
- Wednesday – rest day, Broadway show
- Thursday – run (Central Park)
- Friday – rest day, train home
- Saturday – long run with Sole Sisters (10 miles)
- Sunday – Winter Series #3 (3 miler)

Happy Running! How is your running going? What’s new with you? How did you spend your new Year’s Eve? Have you raced yet in 2020? Any experiences with cortisone shots? Please share.
I know a lot of people who’ve had cortizone shots (so far, knock on wood, I haven’t had one). They work, sometimes for years, but eventually usually the pain comes back. Hope the MRI reveals something.

Barbara and some other friends had one for this and it did nothing. But everyone is different.

The problem with cortizone is basically it’s a bandaid — although it can be a long lasting bandaid. I’m thankful that so far I haven’t had an injury that called for that, because I know I wouldn’t want to do it.

I don’t have a problem with a shot. I would get one. I just want to make sure it’s not something other than a neuroma before I get it. But again more often than not it doesn’t help with a foot. It does with a knee. That’s a joint. This is nerve pain.

I just love (not!) how doctors want to give a steroid shot instead of actually seeing what they are treating. I don’t understand it and good for you for asking for the MRI.

I’m sorry that your foot it still bothering you, but glad that you were able to schedule an MRI to see what is causing the pain.

Hopefully it’ll show something. Sometimes neuromas don’t show on an MRI.

OUCH on the foot. Hoping you get some answers from the MRI. I’ve had a cortisone shot in my knee, but never in a foot. That sounds almost more painful that the issue you’ve been battling.

We’ll see. Unfortunately I’m away all next week for work.

Getting your nails done sounds like a lot more fun than a long run in the rain! 🙂 Good for you for sticking up for yourself. I think an MRI sounds a lot more productive than a cortisone shot. Hope you are feeling better soon!

Fingers crossed for you that your MRI does not show anything serious. Smart to get one before going for the Cortisone. Take care of yourself friend.

I’m glad you got the MRI. It’s time to see what exactly is going on with your foot. That said, I hope it’s nothing serious.

Glad you asked for the MRI. A cortisone shot would have given you instantly relief but not an answer to the source of the problem. I’ve had a few shots when I had pain due to my bunion. Man, they did help but also hurt a lot.

I may get one. The end of pain is a good thing. Thanks for the warning.

My husband had a few cortisone shots during his last bout with PF and that was basically the only thing that helped him, but it just made the pain go away for a few months, it wasn’t a cure. Hopefully you’ll get answers from the MRI, and maybe the answer will be to get a cortisone shot but honestly why not do the MRI so that you know that to start with?

That’s what I thought. But what do I know?

Good luck with the MRI results and hopefully they can help pinpoint the problem.

Thanks. I hope so too.

It’s ridiculous to me that the doc wanted to go straight to the cortisone shot without trying the MRI first. Hope your MRI provides so answers!

How does the biking feel on your foot?
And oh, those anniversary pictures get me right in the feels. Ugh ugh ugh.
I hope the MRI results will yield some answers and some relief. While I’m not opposed to cortisone shots, I don’t think that would be my first choice. At least not until I knew exactly what was going on. Hang in there!

Biking is fine. At least I’m moving pain free.

Wow 8 years…I can’t believe how similar our injuries and recoveries (5 months no running- back to running!) were. Runners are persistent to get back to it! Most people would just say, “why not just stop running??”
I’ll share more on my recap next week but I ended up getting an MRI today and got the results 30 minutes later?
Great week, love reading your recaps.

I know. I never thought about quitting. I got mine on Friday. Still waiting for the doc who had the results on Friday to call me back. Grrr.

you did get quite some miles in! and a nice race on NYD 🙂
you know, sometimes they can’t see a neuroma if they do an MRI. Not that I’m an expert but, well, I’ve been through the whole rigamorole if you know what I mean. And cortisone CAN help but if they don’t get the right place it’s a waste. If you think you have a neuroma, see if you can find toe spreaders, I think they are called “correct toes” and consider a running shoe with a wider or foot shaped toe box. I was too late for the toe spreaders (because I’d had surgery by the time I found out about them) but more room and toe socks (as well) really helped me. Too back I have arthritis in my toes and nerve damage from a surgeon not doing his job correctly 😦 Fingers crossed you already heard the news and have some next steps.

Mri is negative but I still think it’s a neuroma. I’m wearing toe spacer and wide toe box. Still hurts.
