Friday Five Runfessions for July


It’s that time again. Time to get things off my chest with Marcia’s Runfessions at Marcia’s Healthy Slice

1. I runfess…

I almost went to a race without registering first. I always run the Silks and Satins 5K so I guess I thought I did register. I am not a last minute person so I would have registered a while ago.

So a few days before the race, I went to the website to see which of my friends were running it and I did NOT see my name.

Oops. Senior brain!

I registered that day.  Phew.

Anyone else ever show up to a race without registering first?

2. I runfess…

I did not travel at all in July.

So it was a challenge to keep running interesting.  I get bored easily and don’t like to run in the same places.

So I don’t. See below:

Rail Trail … Washington Park … UAlbany

Zim Smith Trail … Corning Bike Path … Nisky Bike Path

Anyone else try to vary where you run or do you run in the same places?

3.I runfess…

I ordered a new pair of Mizunos.  Why??

My right foot all of sudden started having that annoying bunion pain that I had years ago.  It’s fine until after 5-6 miles which is what I’ll be doing every weekend until Nov 3!!

I’m pretty sure it is not from running but job-related – ugh those dress shoes and standing for hours in them. (They are comfortable until the end of the day… and then they’re not.)

The benefit of a blog is that I could look up when my foot stopped hurting. It seems to be the fall of 2015 when I bought my Nike Vomero running shoes.  I recently stopped wearing them because I wanted to run in a stability shoe instead after a calf injury.

The Mizunos were super comfortable for THREE half marathons and now this pain…

Hmmm? Do I go back? To my Nikes?

Can I be happy again in my Mizunos?

So recently I ran the first 3 miles of my long run in my Nikes and the last 5 miles in my new Mizunos (but I forgot to put in the expensive insoles).

The Nikes felt more comfortable.

Dear Mizunos,

I’m not giving up on you yet.

Anyone else have the running shoe dilemma?

4. I runfess…

31 Days of Skirt was pretty exhausting. I do take a lot of pictures and post to Instagram often but not everyday and not following certain clues.

Still it was fun to participate in this annual challenge but glad it’s ALMOST over LOL.

5.I runfess…

I was pretty proud that I had a training schedule for my first marathon. I actually planned to follow it.

But all I do is cross things out and re-write things.

That’s why, I rarely use a plan.

Anyone else have problem following a training plan?

  1. Hah! At least you bother revising your plan. I would ignore it 100%. I always forget if I’ve registered for the Reston 10 Miler. One year I realized the night before that I hadn’t. Luckily it’s a race that still has same-day registration.

  2. Way to mix up your running routes in July! I don’t like to run the same route over and over again either, but I confess, Hubby and I have gotten into a rut, especially for our short run we do before I go to Body Pump class.

    Your training schedule looks like mine. We all have a life outside of running and it pays to be flexible. Good luck with your training!

    • Yes, life is more important than running…I don’t want to lose my family and friends. And I hate training plans. Some people run in the same place and it doesn’t bother them at all.

  3. I’m very good at following plans, but that doesn’t mean that I don’t adjust things.

    I like variety, but believe it or not, sometimes it’s a time thing. Which is why I ran in my neighborhood twice this week and once on the treadmill.

    Obviously I did not to all 31 days or follow the prompts (but they also tell you you don’t have to). I did what I can when I could.

    • I hate plans… too rigid but I did like the challenge of the prompts as opposed to just posting whatever. My rule is never run twice in one week in the same place… it can be done but you have to plan in advance (esp me who hates to run alone.)

  4. I’m torn between Mizunos and Brooks. This dilemma has been ongoing for me. I can’t make a decision!

    I never follow a training plan EXCEPT for a marathon. I’m so intimidated by the marathon distance that I compulsively followed all my training plans. I liked having a plan so I knew exactly what I needed to do.

    • Ok great, glad it’s not only me with shoes!! And since it is my FIRST marathon, I just plan to make sure i get in those LONG runs (14,16,18, 20). Wish me luck.

  5. I had to part ways with Mizunos after Seawheeze last year. I hope your feet like them. I didn’t show up to a race unregistered but I did realize the day before that I wasn’t registered for RnRSTL a few years back. Thankfully they took care of me at the expo. Yikes!

    • I was lucky that I could log in and see that I wasn’t registered. Usually I do not and just show up at the race. So far so good.
      I’m not giving up on Mizunos yet but I did in the past.

I agree, a lot of the time I end up with foot or back pain it seems to be related to work shoes 😦 I’ve stopped wearing heels and try to wear supportive shoes all the time which helps but there’s only so much you can do. Work shoes for women just aren’t that good for our feet it seems. And it makes sense to move things around on the plan as needed as long as you get the runs in 🙂

    • Even in comfortable shoes on the days where I stand for 8 hours straight….ouch!

  7. I tend to wait until the last minute to sign up for races that I know WAY in advance that I’m going to do. I haven’t made it to race week without signing up but never say never lol! I hope you get your shoe situation figured out. That can definitely get annoying. Also, I couldn’t help but chuckle at the training plan. I need changes every so often because then I’d end up being the same. I have learned not to plan too far out lol.

  8. 31 Days is killing me. I didn’t even try as I don’t post anything that much, but I can’t keep up. Not matching was a must for me.

    I pretty much run in either Central Park or along the East Side becuase they’re super convenient. While I love the West Side, the travel time is an issue and I’d rather use limited time running than traveling to running. For a long run I am planning to train up to Yankee Stadium and run across the bridge, across town on W 155th and down the west side.

    I’m currently switching between four pair of shoes, all NB. The ones I ran three Halfs in this year just up and died on me during nYC, but they’re OK for short. I don’t love the 880s I got first, but they’re OK for sub 5 – 1080s are my jam, so far, for the long distance. I hope they don’t change them again before November.

  9. I used to love Mizunos Wave Inspires… totally loved the 8’s that got me through my first marathons, but they just haven’t quite been as perfect since. Brooks Adrenalines have been great “sister” shoes to them.

  10. I’ ve been really lucky with my shoes and I’m grateful for that.

    Love that you got a break from traveling! I haven’t forgotten to register for a race but my friend did and it was a mad scramble! We worked it out, though!

  11. Nothing wrong with adjusting your plan as you go along! While I don’t race, I do have a set workout schedule for every week. That often changes depending on what my body needs. If I need to do yoga to let my body recover rather than another day of CrossFit, I’ll go ahead and switch my plan too!

  12. I wear Mizunos and Asics, I alternate them each run. It has worked well for me and has kept my PF at bay for the past few years!!
