Ultimate Coffee Date for June

It’s that time of the month…

honeymoon gifts from my stepson and his wife

to join up with Coco & Deborah for their ultimate coffee date.

1.Over coffee…

I’d tell you that on a whim, I signed up for a new 5k in Brooklyn.

I must have amnesia on how hard it is get up at 5:30 am, stand all day and after work take the subway, LIRR and another subway to get to the race on time and run a 5k.

and since I was on a roll, I signed for this one in Brooklyn too:

Al Goldstein Summer Speed Series 5K

August 14, 2019 7:10 pm

Ever impulsively sign up for a race and then regret it?

2.Over coffee…

I’d tell you that I ran my 4th half marathon in FOUR months in May.

I’m not tired from training because honestly I did not train but I am tired of thinking that I should train.

My next one is not until September 8. And it will be a training run since I will be in the midst of marathon training at that time.

How many halfs do you run in a year? How far apart? Do you train for all of them?

3.Over coffee…

I’d tell you that our new kitten, Chap (short for Champion) has finally warmed up to my hubby (though I think he still prefers me).  Our older cat is still not a fan and Champ is afraid to go outside. Our cats have always been outdoor cats and I will have to buy all new furniture and rugs if he does not get over his fears.

Do your pets get along? Any advice to make my older cat hate the kitten less?

4.Over coffee…

I’d tell you that I registered for a local half marathon because I am nervous about completing a 20 mile training run.

Mohawk Hudson River Marathon

Oct. 13, 2019

This way I will have company for the last 13 miles of it. I hope to run with some of my running friends.

My plan is to first run 7 miles near the finish, take the shuttle bus to start and end up back at my car.

Have you ever used a half marathon as a part of a training run for a longer race?

5.Over coffee…

I’d tell you I ran the Freihofer Run for Women for the 12th year in a row. It’s the only race that I have run EVERY year (no matter what.)

FRW - 2008

2008 – my first (and they still give you a box of cookies)

Is there one race that you always run each year?

It’s also Friday so I’m also linking up with Fairytales and Fitness for the Friday Five linkup! Join in! Don’t forget to link back to your hostess and visit some other bloggers.

  1. That is awesome that you are doing all those races! You will be well trained. I use to only do maybe one or two halves per year. Now I havent even run a half since the NYC in 2017 ( or maybe it was 16. I cant remember).
My family recently acquired a new pet this week so we are anxious to see how well she adjusts to Baylee and Belle. So far so good. Hope your cats get a long! -M

    • I’m not sure if they will ever get along. But at least fight less.

Not everyone likes to run long races. As long as you stay active, that’s good.

  2. That’s a great idea to use a half marathon as one of your training runs for the marathon long run. I did that last year and it really helped. Just make sure to go at training run pace and not race pace 🙂 Adorable photo of the kitten. My older cat still hates the younger cat so I definitely don’t have any tips. But they have at least come to a peaceful compromise state so there isn’t much actual fighting.

  3. I love that it seems like Brooklyn is getting more races now.

I’m thinking of signing up for Surftown as well! Have you booked a hotel yet? I looked on the website and the options were pretty slim.

  4. so far I haven’t signed up for any races that I ended up regretting. Well except the color run. I got a lot of flack for it on my blog too because I posted why I would never run a color run again haha! I run a lot of races as training runs to be honest, so I totally get it! I love your kitty! my cats do NOT get along. Spooky is always on her own and Priscilla and Nena are busy having WWIII every day. Sigh.

  5. Jeff ran a half marathon as part of his marathon training, and also a 10K – on a day that he had 18 miles on tap. So he ran 12 miles first and then finished up with the 10K. Said it wasn’t bad but his legs did get a little stiff in the time between finishing the 12 miles and when the race began (about 30 minutes). But doing races for training really seemed to help him enjoy more of the longer training runs.

Chap is so cute! Our older cat never liked our kittens, but eventually they grew out of the kitten stage and stopped trying to play with him so much, and there was a mutual toleration.

  6. Ummm…did I ever impulsively sign up for a race, then later regret it? Only all the time! 🙂 Why do I do that? Using the half as a training run for your full is definitely a good idea. I do that all the time and I love it!

  7. 3 Halfs in 8 weeks was nutso. Planned, but nutso. It’s why I opted not to do Shape, although that wasn’t a DNS as I never actually signed up.
I think I’m doing the Albany Half with you
You’re better about after work Brooklyn races than I am — they’re a hard no. I just know I own’t get there
Can’t wait to see you Monday

        • I’m just gonna say, that even though I’ve never run it, Mowhawk Hudson isn’t the most exciting race (as heard from lots of friends who HAVE run it).

Of course, we also run on that path all the time.

            • The route is only part of it, but of course it’s a big part of it. But there’s also the lack of spectator support for the most part (although I’m used to that, doing mostly smaller races), the fact that the bike path isn’t closed — and also that the bike path is so narrow.

It definitely has pretty parts, but some people do better with less congested and more spectator support, so they just need to know that going in.

              • My choices are this or the Staten I sland Half. It’s somehow easier to get to Albany than Staten Island. It will come down to whether the birthday party is this weekend or not.

                • LOL at Albany being easier than Staten Island!

I assume you’ll stay with your brother if you do it. Let us know if you do need a bed (if you don’t mind Bandit & Lola barking at you, or sleeping on a futon).

                  • Thanks both! I hope so too
Oddly crowd support has never been a thing I noticed — I think the NYC Half was the first time I really experienced it. You get smatterings in the Park, run groups supporting their own but Lebow and Brooklyn were terrible weather and Fort Lauderdale is 6am.

                    • I’m ok with sparse spectator support too (heck, some of my downhill races it’s been virtually impossible for anyone to spectate) — but for some people it makes a rel difference.

              • On the whole it is a well organized race with lots of volunteers. I didn’t really notice the lack of crowd support. My hubby actually came to the race which was a shocker.

  8. I’ve run the BAA 10K every year since it began. I plan to run it until I can’t do it anymore!
I usually impulsively sign up for races in the evening after a few beers. I get excited when I read about races any way, but I loose some self control and common sense in the evening after a few drinks. It’s worse around Dec/Jan when I’m making grand plans for the next year.
I’m running 12 half marathons in 2019. The most I’ve ever done in a single year, but I just love this distance.

    • 12. That is a lot. I’ve thought about running one a month.

I know how you feel. I just read about one in Bermuda.

I’d love to run the BAA.

  9. In general I’m not an impulsive person, so it’s pretty rare for me to sign up for a race on a whim (although it has happened).

There are few races that I do every year. There’s usually a hole somewhere, for whatever reason. Life gets in the way.

Sometimes I do lots of halfs (and yes, I always train) and sometimes not so much. Again, life.

    • How true. Life gets in the way. But again many things are more important than running. Hard to find a balance sometimes.

I’m a planner. But as far as racing and social activities, pretty impulsive. I often overbook my life. I actually canceled a friend dinner this week.
