It’s Friday so I’m linking up with Fairytales and Fitness for the Friday Five linkup! Join in! Don’t forget to link back to your hostess and visit some other bloggers.
If you follow me, you probably know that I love to race and am a big proponent of signing up for lots of races.
My topic for today is: The Benefits of Frequent Racing
1. Cool Swag.
Sometimes, it’s just a shirt but lots of times, it is a bag, water bottle, fuel samples, and other running-related goodies. If you are fortunate, it could be a hat or a jacket.
2. Meet New and Old Friends
Many of my running friends, I have met at a race. It is so fun to see a familiar face at a race and chat…about running, of course. – Laurie, Melissa & Jenny, Holly & Jackie.
If you do not have anyone to run with, sign up for races. I bet you will meet someone who would be perfect to accompany you on a few of your runs.
3. Free Food
I love to eat especially to replenish the calories burned during running.
Of course, not all races have a large selection of food but if you are lucky, there may be pizza and my favorite, ice cream.
4. Replaces Speed Workouts
I am the first to admit it. I know that I should, but I don’t do speed drills, tempos, intervals, hill repeats, strides, etc. So for me, I guess my speed workout happens during a race. I’ll do those hills, run sprints because I have no choice. And I’ll try to do them well because I am a competitive person.
5. Gets You Out There During the Week
When it is cold, windy and just plain nasty and I don’t feel like running, if I have a race scheduled for the weekend, I will make myself get out there and run. I know if I don’t run during the week, then my finish time will suffer, I may get injured and/or the race will be unpleasant. It takes a long time to get in shape and such a short time to feel out of shape.
Happy Running! Do you race frequently? Why or why not?
As you know, I like doing a lot of races, too…but it does get costly LOL Thankfully, a lot of events (even the small-town ones) are turning towards tech fabric shirts/jackets, though I seldom wear many of them.

Yes you do run a lot of races. I enjoy reading the recaps.
Next Friday, I’ll post about the downside.

Because I rarely do a race for a PR, I actually really enjoy the community aspect of racing. I appreciate when spectators cheer for us and I love the energy of running in large races.

Races are a fun way to get in your speedwork and meet up with friends. I am never a fan of the food though 🙂

It’s not a breaking point for me either.

What do you do with all your swag? You must have a ton of stuff!
I don’t like to do a lot of races–it gets pretty expensive. I usually pick a few key races and plan around those. We’ll see what happens now with my health issues…

I do.
Well you did great today.

You have convinced me. I am going to sign up for more races. I love doing the shorter ones; they don’t leave you feeling wiped out afterward and you can do a bunch of them. they are a good way to get speed workouts in!

I love racing but it gets so expensive so I don’t do it all that often

I do wish that races were not so darn expensive! I know I would have raced a lot more when I was running if they were a little cheaper.
I also love when there is ice cream after!

I know. Race fees are too high. I don’t even want a shirt

That accidentally signed up meme is the best.
I agree with you on all of these –except maybe the food. I’m just never hungry enough and or am too thirsty to appreciate a free bagel. I love the summer melon ones though
5 is key to me — all week, and all winter.

That’s funny. Because today’s race had great food and I didn’t eat anything.

It was hard. Not trained enough. But no pain and faster than NYC. So all is good.

I like to race but more in moderation. As you always say, there’s more trifecta than running. 😊
