Friday Five – Ultimate Coffee Date for February

It’s that time of the month…

Starbucks Coffee City Mug Collection- Florida, 16 Oz Cup

time to join up with Coco & Deborah
for their ultimate coffee date.

Where I live, we’re in the middle of a polar vortex so it’s HOT coffee in the morning before work and red wine in front of the fireplace at night.

1. Over coffee/wine…

I’d tell you that I actually for the first time ever maybe, I did ALL my long runs!!! (And the temps got colder with each one!) Do I hear the applause?

Thanks to my running friends…. I feel prepared to run 13.1 miles on February 10.

Do you have to have company to run your long runs or are you able to do them solo?

2.Over coffee/wine…

I’d tell you that I can’t wait to skip town.  My last hotel stay (for work) was Dec 20 and my last vacation stay was Paris in October.

We haven’t had a really bad winter (until recently) but still I am looking forward to feeling the sand beneath my toes.

last March

I am not weather stalking (well, maybe a little). It may not be warm but I know that it will be warmer than it is in NY.

Anyone else have a warm weather race-cation planned?

3.Over coffee/wine…

I’d tell you that after this coming half marathon on Feb. 10, I have another TWO halfs (NYC, Helderberg to Hudson), a 15k (Hot Chocolate Brooklyn) , a third half (Great Sacandaga), a 15k (Adirondack Lakes) this spring and then a fourth half marathon (Surftown RI).  That will keep me from obsessing about my first FULL marathon….

United Airlines NYC Half-Marathon

I promise not to count down and panic until after September 8 (when I start my 13+ mile long runs…)

Nov 3, 2019… 26.2 miles …OMG!!

Do you have a lot of big races on your schedule?  Or do you train for one at a time?

4.Over coffee/wine…

I’d tell you that that I’ve already looked into half marathons for next winter (and I haven’t even run this year’s yet.)

OR  perhaps…

Are you a planner or do you sign up for your races at the last minute?

5.Over coffee/wine…

I’d tell you that I’ve become a Nike Zoom Vomero hoarder.  Even when I need new ones, I have a hard time giving up the old ones.  I rotate them and keep the older ones for shorter runs and races. The problem is that I don’t keep track of the number of miles on the shoes. I seem to need new ones frequently (my feet and lower back tell me when) and especially when running a half marathon.

Nov 2018 – my latest pair

another in Oct 2018?

another in Sept 2018?

I’m on the verge of buying a black version of the new 14s.  Please stop me!

Anyone else have too many pairs of the same shoe?

  1. Unfortunately my shoe of choice for races is essentially out of business. I have ones that I will use for this half (but nothing like your stash), but I love having a new one for a race. And I can’t. And now I have to find a new go-to shoe which definitely doesn’t make me happy.

I am not signed up for a race after this upcoming half, although there are some possibilities . . . I haven’t been looking but things keep appearing. It’s just about deciding, which is hard with the unknowns right now. I’ve begun to have hope that maybe I will add more than one state this year.

70s is pretty darn warm (especially after this week).

Obviously I can do long runs by myself. I prefer to do them with others, but I don’t have as many partners as you do. I don’t want to go into a race untrained so I do what I have to do (including running on the treadmill).

  2. I am a huge proponent of shoe hoarding. A few years ago, Saucony stopped making my go-to shoe, and I had a REALLY hard time finding a new shoe that worked for me. I have a new go-to, but can’t afford to buy additional pairs, and I’m worried that they’ll go away on me.

  3. I absolutely hope you’re staying warm and that the weather cooperates for you next week!

I combine signing up in advance and at the last minute. And most of my races are pretty much warm weather ones, because, well… that’s just where I live LOL!

I have hopes of signing up for some out of state in fall and winter of this year. Not sure I’m going to get in many half marathons in the next few months, but we will see how it goes.

    • I am trying to stay warm and do some running. It’s been a challenge lately.

Yes we have opposite climates. Two of my halfs are local and the others I am staying with family/friends or have free hotel points. That makes things affordable. Esp after the bathroom remodel and then income taxes!!

  4. Funny you mention shoe hoarding – my newest pair of Clifton 1s arrived yesterday. I don’t need them yet, but they were on sale and they may stop making that model, so…I should buy another pair, right? 😉 I do keep track of my miles via Garmin Connect – it’s fairly accurate except for some walking mileage that I don’t track. It’s helpful but mostly I know I’m needing a new pair when things start hurting that don’t normally hurt (usually my knees).

    • I rotate my shoes so I never know how many miles but like you said, things start to ache like my lower back when I need to buy a new pair.

  5. So you know I’m a last minute jumper inner…. If I do that half in Florida, it will be at the last minute! I’m sure you’re going to enjoy your time at the beach. I cannot wait!

When I took a treadmill selfie earlier last month, I was so embarrassed by the pile of shoes next to said TM. I need to do a Konmari and get those shoes out of there!

  6. You’ve got a great line-up of races. I tend to plan my races in advance, but after my bout with injuries last year I’ve been leery to commit to too many ahead of time.

I am a big believer in shoe hoarding if you’ve got a shoe you love. If the Adrenalines turn out to work for me, I’ll be buying multiple pairs before marathon training.

  7. I love all the racing you do! I wish I had more of a selection in my area. I need to do a major purge on my shoes. I have several pairs of Brooks Adrenalines right now…a couple pairs are close to being retired (but are still good for short runs). And, these same shoes are currently on sale on the Brooks website for $78….so, there may be another pair added to the collection under my bathroom sink 😉

  8. Cute bathing suit!

WHether I need company or not is so random. I can do a 15K solo, no sweat but this morning’s 10K and the wet charity fun run a couple weeks ago were made much better by random people to chat to mid-race. I like it when you and I get together to catch up, so that’s a different kind of company.

I’m a planner, but also a last minute. I’ve only had my 3 Halfs plus this weekend’s runs on the calendar, but then added two this week. Usually the “nearing capacity” is what gets me to pull the trigger on the local ones that need no planning. Now that some work & personal trips have settled in, I can plan around them.

  9. Wow you have a lot of shoes! I only have two pairs I alternate. Just like shoes, I now prefer only a few races at a time – my big race is coming up in Apr which is the Rock n Roll Nashville marathon and possibly a tune up half between now and then.
