My Topic this week is: Looking Ahead to 2019
So last week, I assessed my running in 2018 in hopes of planning out 2019.
This was my 2018 Assessment:
STRENGTHS:
Healthy Miles, Quality and Successful Racing, Consistency
NEEDS TO WORK ON:
Goals, Strength Training, Speed, Leaving my Comfort Zone
Well, change is not easy.
Here’s what I have planned:
1. Run 1000 miles.
It’s just a number. But that number means two things to me. I have been running consistently all year and that I have not been injured.
2. Take some yoga classes.
I’m not good at yoga. I have zero flexibility. But it is relaxing and my life is not. So I think it will help me both mentally and physically.
3. Do some strength or cross training.
I hope to play more tennis starting in June but I do have access to a local free gym. I’d like to get there on some of my rest days.
4. Train seriously for One Race.
Not sure which one but I have already registered for five half marathons so maybe the local one. Or maybe a 5k.
5. And finally…. Finish a 26.2 mile race.
Yes, you heard that right. I haven’t registered yet (next week) but it seems crazy not to take advantage of qualifying for this year’s NYC Marathon.
I hope that I can convince some local runners to help me train and some other runners (yes, you bloggers) to meet me in NYC on Nov. 3).
I have also considered registering and then deferring until 2020.
So there you have it. My plans for 2019 are written. Now I have to execute them. Stay tuned for periodic progress reports.
Happy Running! Any goals or plans for 2019? Please share.
ahhhhhhh you’re going to do it!!!! I say you just do it and don’t defer. If you do your yoga, strength and train seriously for one race there’s no reason you can’t. Besides marathon training will get you to that 1000 mark!
I wish I could be there!!!

Well you have been there and will again.
Thanks for your confidence and support. I will need it!!!

I was wondering if you were going to take advantage of running the NYC! Good for you! I concur on yoga. I am not good at it at all but it makes me feel good and relaxed. It’s a nice compliment to running

I’m nervous about running a full so I may still chicken out. It’s a BIG commitment.

Thanks. It is exciting and scary. At least in Nov, I won’t have to worry about it being cancelled due to heat.

Not so sure….26.2 sounds sooo daunting.

I am not surprised, since you’ve been dropping hints all over the place. If you’re going to do a marathon, then that’s the one to train for. 🙂

Also forgot to say that’s it’s much harder to get in those extras if you train for a marathon.

Yes but everyone trains differently. I don’t plan on the extra mileage since I work such a crazy schedule. I only plan to finish the race and it will be my one and only. Then I’ll go back the halfs (where I don’t need to get in more than 3 miles during a work day.)

Ah, says many a repeat marathoner. Even with the plan to just finish, you still need some really long long runs. Although some people only go up to 16.

I know for a fact that it will only be ONE!! Too much of a time commitment and I don’t have hubby support at my races. I plan to run 20. I am a conservative trainer and that has kept me injury-free I believe. I have to stay that way until Nov now lol

I think so. It’s in Nov so no ice or snow to worry about while training and no hot temps for the longest runs. Still scary to run 26.2 miles. But it’s a long ways away…anything can happen.

It takes months to train for a marathon (if done properly). So don’t count out hot long runs.

Only if we have a very hot fall which can happen but is rare. I have a half Sept 8 and then I will add the longer runs from there.

I’m just going to copy and paste your goals and consider them mine! I want to do ALL of those things this year! I’ve never even come close to 1000 miles in a year. That would be an awesome accomplishment!

You can do it too. Or it will be fun trying.

How exciting for your marathon plans!! You’re going to rock it! I have more yoga on my list this year of goals/resolutions! It’s the best for my tight hips and hamstrings in between runs, for sure! Have a great weekend!!

I’m planning on running 1,000 miles also. I only ran about 850 last year, so it is a real challenge. Every time I run 10 miles I tell my self that’s 1% towards my goal!
I’ve also got this crazy idea to run 12 half marathons. That may be the real stretch goal for 2019.

No. I think 12 halfs is a great goal. I have often considered that.

Those are great goals, and even with changes and challenges, goals that you can attain through the year!
Cheers to a great 2019!
