Weekly Wrap for 1.29.18-2.4.18: Let the training begin

ru

When I first started running half marathons, I used to start “training” 12 weeks before the race. My next one is my 30th half marathon and it is in 6 weeks (I think – check out my Ultimate Coffee Date post for an update on my situation) so I guess I need to start increasing my long run distance. (That is what I now call “training.”)

Last week –

  • Monday –  Another day in the high 30s with no snow or rain. I decided to check out my favorite path to see if the ice had melted and I was very excited that it had. I even had enough time before it got dark to squeeze in a run.

love the extra hour of daylight

  • Tuesday – Since I was not travelling, I was able to play in my tennis group.  As in previous weeks, I took advantage of the fact that there is a treadmill there and ran struggled through a few miles on it.

only 2 miles but I did sweat…why do they keep these rooms so hot?

  • Wednesday – We can’t get a break with the weather … cold and windy again but I did get in a run before meeting my BFF for a walk around the mall.

campus + pond loop

  • Thursday – Finally a deserved rest day. Instead did some errands after work and then went out to dinner with a friend.
  • Friday – Rest day #2 and mah jongg at my house.
  • Saturday – Today my third race of 2018 (and my first serious one), the Polar Cap Run, a 4-miler. And a cold one it was.  Though it was not a fast one for me, I still managed to snag 2nd in my age group.  (Recap will be coming soon…)

Afterward I ran 4 more miles (2 while waiting for AJH to finish and 2 around town).

  • Sunday –  Another rest day and my first visit to Hot Yoga.  I have been meaning to start back at yoga and with these cold temps, hot yoga seemed perfect.

Afterward, we went out to lunch to celebrate my stepson’s engagement!!

an April wedding is planned 🙂

I’m not a big football fan but wasn’t that a great game?

This Coming Week

  • Monday 4 miles
  • Tuesday drive to Buffalo, rest day
  • Wednesday –  3-4 miles?
  • Thursday 3-4 miles?
  • Friday – rest day, drive home
  • Saturday9 mile run
  • Sunday – rest day

    • My daughter-in-law to be wants kids so we’ll see.

I loved the heat and I prefer going to classes. I’ve never done yoga at home.. The owner & instructor is a runner and teaches with one of my runner friends.

  1. Congrats all around- your race, and son’s engagement! What a good week- I am totally inspired by your 30 marathons! I have only done 2, and debating if I will do another!

    • I thought I was one and done but it’s a challenge and I feel so accomplished when I am done.

The week was good except for my Fla half getting cancelled. That was a big downer.

  2. I had to laugh at your training strategy for a half marathon. I’m the same way….I’m usually good for 6-7 miles no matter what, so adding a 13.1 race to my roster a few weeks later is no big whoop. Adding an extra mile each week to my long run is easy peasy 😉

  3. Since you’re so consistent it makes sense that you don’t need as much time for your training plans! Congrats on another AG award and congrats to your stepson and his engagement! The winter has been quite a rollercoaster but I’m doing my best to take what the day gives me. It still beats the heat for me – at least when it comes to marathon training!

  4. My running buddy asked me for a copy of our old USAFit training plan for her upcoming (in MAY) half; I gave it to her and after looking at it she said “oh, I guess I really don’t need this – I can probably run 10 miles tomorrow if I had to” – yep. Once you run all the time, “training” takes on a different meaning.

Big congrats on getting a daughter-in-law soon!

  5. You probably know I stay half marathon ready most of the year. Unless injured (ugh). Six weeks will be here before you know it — how exciting! Congrats on snagging that age group award! Thanks for linking.

  6. Great job, as always! And congratulations to your stepson!

The game was really good – I wasn’t into it at all, but I did manage to catch the end. I’m glad I did.

I try to keep my base high enough that I can pop into a half marathon in a couple of weeks, if I felt like it. So far, that plan has been working. It’s something new for me, and I am happy with the longer runs during the week, rather than just starting to build them up on the weekends. It’s always good to experiment with different methods.

  7. Can’t believe you ran right after a race. I feel so lazy. Lol. I’ve been wanting to try hot yoga because a friend of mine swears by it. She told me to check it out on groupon first. We shall see. Did you enjoy it? Also congrats to the step son.
