This week, the topic is: Food.
So what would someone who doesn’t cook much and whose post-run fuel is usually ice cream write about??
I am going to share what I use for energy before or during my runs:
1. GU
It works for me so why switch? They don’t upset my stomach and they are easy to carry on a run.
My favorite flavors are:
- with caffeine – Salted Caramel, Caramel Macchiato, Chocolate Outrage
- without caffeine – Root Bear, Peanut Butter
2. Nature’s Bakery Fig Bars
They come in loads of flavors but I usually eat the plain fig or the blueberry.
They are made with 0g of trans fat, all natural, whole wheat , and are Non GMO, Kosher, and cholesterol-free. Some flavors are even gluten-free.
3. Bananas
I love to eat them and they are a good source of potassium which is said to help prevent muscle cramping. Plus they come in their own wrapper. LOL.
4. Starbucks Chocolate Banana Smoothie
I am sure it must be heathier than a Latte or a Frappuccino, right? (This is obviously a pre or post run treat.)
It contains: A nourishing blend of mocha flavored sauce, a whole banana, milk, whey protein and fiber powder, and ice.
5. Larabar Bites
Are they healthy? Not sure but they do taste good. Here’s what their website says:
All 4 indulgent flavors are made from just 5-6 simple ingredients and are gluten free, non-GMO, vegan, and dairy free.
Happy Running! What do you eat for energy?
I never thought of using Fig bars. I love figs so I will give there a try!

Larabar bites are actually very healthy & they make good fuel on the run, too.

I’ve only eaten before and never for a race. They would be hard to carry in a pocket and melt in the summer.

They’re really not that hard to carry & don’t melt. You just put them in a ziplock.
But no need for you to change. They’re a little too sweet for me on the run.

Remember you walk. I can grab and eat a gu while I run.

I recently just bought some of those lara bites and they are tasty! I like to have a few between classes. They are just enough to get me through until my next meal.

I agree. I have to stop myself after a few. They taste too good.

The fig bars… is that pre or post? They sound great for fuel.

Can be either. Usually pre.

I keep seeing the Larabites but haven’t grabbed them yet. I’ll have to give them a try.

How have I not seen Larabar Bites?? I’ve never ordered a smoothie from Starbucks either. Who am I?

Get with the program. Kidding!
I don’t know if Starbucks promote the smoothies but they are good and they are cheaper than frappes. And healthier.

I’m so sad that bananas make my mouth itch. I can have them in smoothies tho!

Oh no. Well smoothies are great.

I don’t think I’ve tried the root beer GU! I’m slowly easing back to gels (now that I’ve figured out to not OD on the Gatorade right after eating one during a race).

I love bananas after a run. If we go out to brunch after a long run I always order a banana. The server usually looks at me with an eyebrow raised.

My last race fuel was a $1300 fail = broke a crown on a Shot Block! So, I’ll be sticking with fluids for a while.

You and I have the same runners palate apparently! I keep a box of salted caramel Gu on hand at all times and I have the Larabar bites, coconut flavor, in my pantry as we speak. And bananas are a staple at our house. I’m with you …I want something easy to carry, stash away and eat without getting sticky hands while running 🙂
