Wednesday Word – Adventurous

Deb Runs

Every Wednesday, the Deb from Deb Runs will be providing a word about which to blog. Kind of like a nice little blog prompt. Posts can be fitness or health related, but don’t have to be, so really anyone can play along. Just be sure to link up with InLinkz on Deb’s main post, and share the love by reading and commenting on other’s participant’s posts.

Today’s word is ADVENTUROUS.

What does it mean?

Willing to take risks or to try out new methods, ideas, or experiences.

Am I adventurous?

To some, not at all.

I don’t do warrior races or mud runs or even trail races. I don’t jump out of airplanes or even ride scary roller coasters.

But to many of my friends, I am adventurous.

To me, adventurous is not backing down from a challenge.

I have run many 5K, 10K, 15k, and 10 mile races. And I never ran at all before age 55.

I have run 18 half marathons.  I never thought I would or I could.

Eau Palm Beach Half

I have run after serious ankle surgery even though I was told that I couldn’t.

Adventurous is also not being afraid to explore new places and even take risks.

And I guess leaving a marriage of almost 20 years and a teaching career after 22 years is pretty adventurous. Of course it was scary to go back to school and learn something new.  As they say, “nothing ventured, nothing gained.” And now, I am remarried (for 17 years) and an Instructional Technologist (for 18 years.)

My hubby used to own a little float plane.  We would fly often together. Many found it too scary.  I loved it!!

unfortunately it got wrecked when the hangar collapsed during an ice storm

I have traveled to many places (many by myself) and have benefited greatly from every trip.

I have flown by myself to run many a race. Races where I didn’t know a soul.

I have stayed in AirBnb apartments by myself in NYC.  My friends shuddered at the thought.

So whatever form your dream takes…a triathlon, a marathon, an ultra or a 5k, don’t hesitate.  Take that adventure!!

Happy Running! Are you adventurous?

  1. Yeah, Mr. Judy was not crazy about doing an airbnb in NYC. I was ready! Yet he is the one who instigated the hot air balloon ride (he did several; we did it together over Napa) & the glider ride.

I’ve flown all over by myself, traveled by myself — but most of our travel has been together. I’ve walked all over Europe by myself, because he was always in a conference. I’m not sure I’d stay by myself in Europe, though. Especially these days. 😦

In fact, on one of our trips to Europe we stayed one night at the Brussels Airport. 😦

I’m adventurous in some ways, but definitely not an adrenaline junkie. There’s a difference!

    • I agree but what someone else considers dangerous, I may consider not dangerous. Like being in NYC solo or flying solo to Europe, that’s doesn’t scare me. I’ve even been to Israel. I’ve flown in my hubby’s plane and found it fun. Jumping out a plane which many of my friends says was awesome does scare me. My hubby is an adrenaline junkie and has dragged me on snowmobile rides and roller coasters. He has zero fear!! Not me!!

      • I don’t mind being in NYC solo, but I wouldn’t want to be walking around it in the dark by myself.

Flying to/from solo to Europe? Check. Almost every time we went to Europe I either flew there myself or flew back by myself. The time I flew back from Paris there was a couple making out a seat away the entire flight and NO movie (and I didn’t have an Ipad back then — not even sure Ipads were around yet).

Definitely not an adrenaline junkie & neither is Mr. Judy.

        • I wasn’t talking about you. I have friends that think NYC is dangerous but that’s because they never go.

Married to an adrenaline junkie but I don’t do things that I don’t want to. Right now, tennis is keeping him busy until boating season.

          • Going to the city on my own doesn’t bother me at all, I’ve been doing that since I was a teenager (it was less safe then!). But walking around it at night, in the dark, by myself; I don’t think I’d feel safe then.

My husband is definitely not an adrenaline junkie!

            • I wouldn’t walk around Harlem in the dark but Times Square is a different story. it is so lively at night. Anyway, I don’t usually walk around at night. And in November, after the you turn the clocks back, it is light for the race.

  2. Oohhh…the float plane. I’d do that! Bummer it was wrecked by the ice storm. It doesn’t bother me to travel alone either. My husband worries about my safety, however. He thinks it’s his job.

  3. I think you are really adventurous. I would never stay in an AirBnB by myself, especially in a big city. You also fly to races solo and race solo which most people would consider adventurous. I guess I am a scaredy cat, but I did stay in London a couple times on my own when Tom was traveling and there was something I wanted to do in the city. But in fairness, I stayed at a hotel that was very familiar to me.

    • I am pretty comfortable in NYC. And when I fly to races alone, I am always visiting someone I know there (even if they are not actually racing.) There are many people more adventurous than me.

  4. Very adventurous! and fun I would say! It is fun to get out sometimes and just explore by yourself and see things the way you want to see them. Cheers to many more adventures!

  5. I think adventure very much depends on perception. To one person you may be very adventurous but to another you are not in the least. That float plane would definitely be very scary for me! I agree with you that adventurous means taking on challenges, some risk, and trying something new. It doesn’t have to be some huge thing, but I do think our lives would be awfully empty without any adventure at all.

  6. I wasn’t able to comment on your post while visiting my mom because I never could get your page (and the pictures) to load fully. I’m glad I didn’t because I would have missed telling you that your little plane was the cutest ever! So sad that the hanger crashed on it.

I think you’re extremely adventurous! Thanks for linking up!
