Wednesday Word: Complacent

Deb Runs

Every Wednesday, the Deb from Deb Runs will be providing a word about which to blog. Kind of like a nice little blog prompt. Posts can be fitness or health related, but don’t have to be, so really anyone can play along. Just be sure to link up with InLinkz on Deb’s main post, and share the love by reading and commenting on other’s participant’s posts.

This week’s Word is COMPLACENT

What does “Complacent” mean?

being satisfied with how things are and not wanting to try to make them better

Besides people in my life (and yes we can become complacent with relationships too), there are are few important areas where I could become complacent.

Career:

As a teacher and district technology director, complacent was never in my vocabulary.  I used to spend endless hours on my lesson plans to make sure that my students were successful.  I think I gave them 150%.  Thanks to FB, I can keep in touch with some of my favorite students (as the 2 below that I visited in CA.)

In my 2nd career, I wrote grants, gave workshops, etc trying to help administrators and teachers integrate technology in to their teaching.  It was exhausting but I loved it.

I definitely feel more complacent in job #3.  Of course, I want to improve things but I am less in control of the outcomes and as I approach retirement (if I ever can afford to retire), I want less stress in my life.

Health-related activities:

My first health-related obsession was tennis. I used to play almost everyday.  I took lessons and played on many teams.  Unfortunately my natural talent was less than my desire to be great. I improved from 2.5 to 3.0 and have remained at that level.

Since I became serious about running, I quit all my tennis teams and just play once a week (except for during my annual tennis vacation in May.) I play for fun so I say but of course, I want to win.

I may be complacent about speed drills, hill repeats, intervals, etc but I do want to improve.  I want to be a faster runner.

I run 3-4 times every week even in hot and freezing conditions.  I sign up for races – LOTS of them in hopes of getting better.

I never run a race without my Garmin and check my split paces after each race.

Because I’m old, I do win a lot of age group awards.  Many runners even think I’m fast.  But I know better.

So I may not PR anymore but I will TRY my best to do so.

I do hate to admit it but I am complacent about stretching, strength training, and even eating healthy (I don’t use protein powder, never had a smoothie or an electrolyte drink. I buy frozen veggies rather than fresh, eat frozen waffles & pizza and the list goes on and on.)

Yes, I know I should.  And unfortunately, I probably won’t until something hurts.  Sad but true!

Happy Running!  Are you complacent about anything?

  1. Fortunately, I think I am largely out of my complacent rut, but I notice the complacency in others far more often these days – and it’s starting to upset me as I watch people I loved throw their lives away to complacency. Your picture about “lower expectations” is spot-on for this. People love to have expectations lowered so they aren’t challenged as much. I’m very happy that I am not letting those people hold me back any longer!

  2. I actually don’t think I’m complacent about a lot of things (as I’ve written in comments a few times today).

Protein powders aren’t necessarily healthy. But it’s true I could never eat the way you seem to, anyway, and maintain my weight. And being heavy does not make me happy at all, so I’ll continue to struggle with that.

I enjoy yoga. I’m not sure I really enjoy strength training, but I enjoy what it does for me.

I also think you’re too modest about your running & tennis abilities.

I signed up for Stockadeathon. Now I have to figure out where the heck to park. I don’t know the area at all, I think I’ve driven to Proctors once. And cross my fingers that Chester stays healthy through the weekend, which usually seems to be a problem for him these days.

Maybe I’m complacent about my spending . . . .I can’t say as I really track how much I spend.

    • or complacent about spending money on running clothes LOL

I don’t know Schenectady well either. Just took the Thruway to 890 and got off on Broadway (Proctors exit). I parked on the street near the YMCA – that’s where the bag check & restrooms are. I leave warm clothes there before the race and get them right after the race. Proctors isn’t far. That’s where the awards are & food. There’s also a great farmer’s market.

  3. I am pretty good about strength training and always have been. Stretching? Not so much other than hanging upside down after every run on my Teeter Hang Ups, and hanging from my hands on my pull-up bar. I know I should add yoga into my routine, but rarely do…

    Thank you for linking up!

  4. It’s so easy to become complacent about the “accessory” things to running (stretching, strength training, etc.). I am definitely guilty of that when I get rushed and time gets short. Post-run stretches are usually the first to go. The only thing that keeps me on track is when something starts to hurt. It’s a good reminder that I better take care of myself now if I want to enjoy running long term.
